5.0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN JUST GOD STUFF!
I bought this cd because it shows that DC Talk is willing to experiment. There's jazz, rock, r&b, sap, and funk. What more could you ask for? The more amazing thing is that they make it sound good! Plus the fact that they boldly proclaim the name of Jesus Christ doesn't hurt a bit. It's a Christian band with a Christian CD with a Christian label. Does this...

Plus the fact that they boldly proclaim the name of Jesus Christ doesn't hurt a bit. It's a Christian band with a Christian CD with a Christian label. Does this make sense. It's obviously going to talk about God. One of their best CD's, DC Talk has really topped themselves this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, October 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: DC Talk (Audio CD)
Though their debut album may not be musically as awsome as it is now, this is the classic start from the group that would bring Christian rock into the mainstream light!!! Its somewhat humerous though,in the regards to listening to this album, to think that in a few years these guys would be screaming out songs like "Jesus Freak" and "Supernatural" and make beautiful ballads as "Between You and Me" and "Consume Me! Attention all dcTalk fans!!!!!!!!!!!! BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!! ITS CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!

DC Talk's self-titled 1989 debut is a far cry from the driving rock sound that the trio is now known for. DC Talk gained instant attention as being one of Christian music's very first Rap/HipHop groups. At the time this album was released, DC Talk was primarily the brainchild of Toby McKeehan (aka Tobymac) with Kevin Max (then known as Kevin Smith) and Michael Tait contributing mostly background vocals. Toby wrote and arranged all eight tracks on the band's debut album which fits right in with the popular Rap and Hip-Hop acts of the time (MC Hammer, Run-DMC, LL Cool J and Young MC).
Standout tracks include the terrific "Heavenbound", "Final Days" and the powerful praise anthem "Voices Praise Him". The album's closing track "He Loves Me" is in the same vein as LL Cool J's "I Need Love" and features Michael Tait singing the traditional hymn "Jesus Loves Me".
DC Talk have definitely come along away since the release of this debut album. Nearly 15 years later, Toby, Michael and Kevin are now mega-superstars as both a group and as solo artists. The music may have changed but DC Talk's positive Christ-centered message remains as powerful and true as it was during this early period. From here, it only got better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Their first album..., February 12, 2003

Every group has to begin somewhere. For DC Talk, they began with this album in 1989. Sure, their later albums were much, much better. But that can be said of just about every artist and group out there.

The guys of DC Talk quickly made a name for themselves with this album. They were the first Christian group to add elements of hip hop into their music, a sound that would culminate with "Free At Last" a few years later.

Besides the hip hop, all the songs have one thing in common. They are very up front with their message. DC Talk made no bones that while they hoped to have a crossover following, they would never sacrifice a message of God to do it. Many people will be turned off by the "in your face" approach of their messgae. But DC Talk makes no apologies for that, nor should they.

For any serious, or even halfway, DC Talk fan, this first album is a classic because it shows you where these guys started. It will help you to appreciate their later work that much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair, February 28, 2005
This review is from: DC Talk (Audio CD)
I like this cd but a debut should have at least 12 tracks. But I do like The King and He Loves Me those are my favorite songs I don't like time tah jam because it's only Toby if he wanted to do that song he should've done a solo record in 1990. I also think that Michael Tait sounds odd. When I got this cd I thought it was a special guest singing with the group. If you're a hardcore JESUS FREAK YOU SHOULD BUY THIS

I also have to say I know Evlgenius (Unfotuneately) and I must agree with him that you people do need to make Runnrwood a spotlight review. I know him as well and he is a hardcore DC Talk fan and I believe you need to make him a spotlight review

5.0 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL!!!, April 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: DC Talk (Audio CD)
DC Talk released this album in 1989. By the time Nu Thang came out in '92, the were rapidly gaining popularity. This album cracks me up, because this was the era of white rappers. If your a DC Talk fan, this album is a must. If you just want a good album, get Jesus Freak or Supernatural. Peace

2.0 out of 5 stars They definitely improved., August 5, 2002

Over the years, DC Talk has improved and matured. All the songs on this CD have great lyrics, but Toby needs to let somebody else sing every once in awhile. His voice is annoying after eight songs. My favorite tracks are Time ta Jam, Spinnin Round, and Allelujah. The lyrics of Time ta Jam are very creative. Spinnin Round and Allelujah have good vocals by Kevin. If you are a DC Talk freak, I would recommend this CD just to have the entire collection, although this is not their best CD.

This is when DCT was all about rap. This was made when they got out of college, and you can hear the youngness in their voices. This is great album. They announce their faith wonderful. My favorite song is the first track Heavenbound. It is awesome, and it was the beginning of something wonderful... Not only the album but the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you want to know dc talk, get this album, February 14, 2001

I memorized this album when i was 11 yrs. old. I fell in love with DC Talk when they were only a fledgling group. I saw them open up for Michael W. Smith and they were all about the rap...the true soul and "rap" of the music...in 1990. They may be about commericial music and billboard charts now, but this album represents the real DC talk that I know. This album is raw, pure, beautiful and an all-out triumph for 3 men who didn't know that their faith and talent would lead them to such success. However, this is where they started. Most people thought DC Talk started with "Jesus Freak". It started with their self titled album "DC TALK".
