5.0 out of 5 stars Literally one of the best MMORPG's I've ever played in my life. Action, Adventure, Story, this game has it all. A+++!!!
I have dreamed of something like this game all my life. Going back to the day when I'd play the Marvel board game (Like D&D but with Marvel.), and we'd make up DC character sheets to go with it. LOL Some video games have come close to capturing the magic of the DC Universe, but most allowed you to take control of and BE Batman and Superman, etc... This game, instead,...

I wasn't a beta tester, and I'm not a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) expert.
When I play a game, it comes down to how much fun I had playing. The graphics, the music, the controls are all a part of that, but ultimately, it comes down to the experience.
In the case of DCU Online, it becomes very repetitive very quickly. Nearly every mission is "beat up generic bad guys before beating up iconic bad guys." This isn't necessarily a bad thing if the fighting is fun (which it is, at first). But even with the unlocked skill sets that allow for more complex combos and flashier moves, the lack of variety in the fights eventually takes a toll, and it becomes a chore.

Also, while the interface is usable but clunky, my main gripe is that it makes it difficult to team up with other players. The reason I choose to play MMORPGs to begin with is because I enjoy playing with others (or seeing others run around when I want to go solo: it makes the in-game world seem lively). In DCU Online, it seems that I'm only able to team up with people in the immediate vicinity, and am only able to communicate with people who are on my (hero or villain) side. As such, the game feels surprisingly dead at times.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the fight mechanics of this game (for anyone who's played Batman: Arkham Asylum (great game, highly recommended), it's similar: melee attack, distance attack, block, and a variety of special skills 1-8). I appreciate the fact that the game is updated nearly ever week with improvements. I appreciate the thoughtful, intricate level design (the developers must have hired architects from detail in the two in-game cities). I appreciate the fact that they got Mark Hamill and Kevin Conway to do the voices. The music could be better, the graphics are nice to look at, and I don't mind paying $15 a month to continue playing provided that a game is really fun.

But DCU online starts off strong and within 10 hours (a very short amount of time for MMORPGs) becomes routine. If it was possible, I'd like to have rented this game.

On the collectors edition: you're paying more for a plastic statue, an in-game item (a mini joker blimp or mini batmobile that hovers by your character's shoulder and shoots at your target), a small sized comic, and a poster. I'm on the fence as to whether these things are worth an extra $30.

-------

Update: 2/3/2011

After 20+ more hours of play, I'm sticking to my original 3 star rating: the missions are nearly identical, but there is player vs. player (PVP) either in the arenas or in selected servers to vary things up a bit. For the PVP arenas, however, there is often a wait before you're able to enter and the time you spend waiting seems to be random (from as little as 5 minutes to over an hour).

Also, the interface isn't the most user friendly. You can make a group with people by typing: "/invite" and their name, just as you could privately message people with "/tell". It's functional, but I would have preferred to do these same things by selecting people off a server list.

This game, instead, allows you to make your OWN hero, and then fight alongside with and work with all your favorite DC heroes and heroines or villains. And it's not just the action which is good. And it IS good. Incredible powers to choose from (And they'll add more all the time.), combined with weapons and movement abilities that all do their own things, all that combines to make a unique and action filled game play experienc. But it also has, at it's heart, a GREAT story, with adventures written by some of the best writers in the business.
Short and sweet, bottom line, it's a great game. As they're working out the bugs that ALL games start with, the game is just getting better and better, and that includes additional content, which will be steadily and continuously added. I love this game, and have been able to play, and most importantly, ENJOY playing, for months now. I haven't gotten tired of it at all. I can't play as much as I like because I'm sick and motion makes that worse, but when I can play, I LOVE it.
I'f you're a fan of MMO style games, then give this one a try. It's one of the best. In addition, this Collector's Edition is LOADED with extra goodies. The Batman statue ALONE is worth the price! It's gorgeous! And there are several comic and art books to add to your collection about the making of and back story of the game. If you love comics and the DC Universe, do NOT miss out on this game. Give it a try, I don't think you'll regret it.
Thanks sincerely for your time folks. R.A. McDowell

I've bought and played lots of MMO's and this one was amazing from the time I opened the box. The packaging was very high quality, what they added to the collector's edition was well worth the additional money. Over all the game is fun, easy to pick up, and engaging. It's well worth the investment. The only think I would caution about is to make sure you got everything in the box that was supposed to be included. The collector's edition is supposed to come with a buddy key inside the packaging and mine did not. Not critical, but it is disappointing when you'd like to get one of your friends involved. Apparently this is not an uncommon issue with purchases from Amazon if the Sony Online Forums are to be believed.

Decent game, story line is good and the graphics are really cool. The main draw back for me and the main reason why I quit is that chat features were awful.

DC Universe Online has to be one of my favorite mmorpg's. It's a game I would rather play over World of Warcraft, thought that is just my own opinion, because I happen to be a DC Universe fan, so the chance to create my very own hero/villain and become apart of the Universe? It's almost a dream come true.

I can play this game for hours on end! A lot of reviews say that this game is a copy of World of Warcraft (they also say that the soon to come Star Wars: The Old Republic is a copy of WoW as well) which is ignorant. First off, the game has an almost completely different fighting style. Most mmorpg's use the 1 - 9+0 keys for skills or what have you, so of course, that would be similar to World of Warcraft...and MMORPG's in general. So don't listen to those who say this game is a knock-off of WoW, because that would be the same as comparing Call of Duty to Battlefield. They're both online shooter games, the controls are very similar, but of course in sense, they ARE different. You might as well compare Superman to Batman, because they're both superheroes. See what I'm saying? Both these games (WoW and DCUO) are MMORPG's, so saying one is copying another is just ignorance. Maybe if there were goblins and wizards and elves and other fantasy type of characters, than yeah, it'd be a knock off. But it's not.

Anyways, moving on from the point that this game is NOT a knock off. I would really recommend this game to any DC fans, if you're not a DC fan, or a comic fan, or not much of a Superhero-lover, than this game may not be for you. But, it would always be good to check it out! If you've ever thought of what it would be like to become a Superhero yourself, this game will show you!

WARNING: AMAZON DOES NOT SHIP THEIR COLLECTOR'S EDITION WITH THE BUDDY KEY!!!
(The buddy key is a card you get with a 15 day code that allows you or a friend free membership for fifteen days.)
I HAVE PURCHASED THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION FROM AMAZON AND IT DID NOT COME THE FIRST TIME. SO I RETURNED THE GAME AND AMAZON SHIPPED ME ANOTHER COPY OF THE GAME, WHICH STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE BUDDY KEY!!!

ALSO, THERE ARE MANY OTHER REVIEWS THAT SAY AMAZON DOES NOT SHIP THE BUDDY KEY AS WELL!!! BUY FROM AMAZON AT YOUR OWN RISK OF NOT GETTING THE BUDDY KEY. BUT NOTE THAT AMAZON CAN BE MUCH CHEAPER THAN OTHER STORES!!! (At the moment their item is only $43, which is a steal! I bought mine for about $57 a week or two ago from Amazon, ugh! Should have waited...)

I also gave the game a 4/5 because I do think Sony did a bad job with the game. In the sense, their organizing of their website and game updates and what have you, all seem very sloppy. I'm just hoping that in the future Sony steps up their game and cleans up their mess, because right now...the game IS a mess!!!

Firstly I should say I'm from Australia and this game worked fine for me. I was worried maybe it wouldn't work in case of any region lock outs but I had no dramas in the installation procedure. Very Pleased with that :D

To be honest I haven't played that game as much as I would have liked to so far lol..But from what I've played it seems pretty good.
The graphics are great and it seems to have a really good story line to it all.

The Collector's Edition of this games doesn't disappoint either. It comes in a very nice display quality box and the bonus books/comics are printed in premium glossy paper for the most of them.
The Batman Collectors figurine is also Individually numbered underneath it. So if that kind of thing matters to you. That's a bonus then..lol

Overall this Collector's edition is pretty good value for its money...If there was only one thing that I'd complain about is the membership online subscription setup process.
I was under the impression I would get 30 days trial (which is included with the game) to try out the game & then decide which subscription plan to choose. I decided from the start to risk it and choose LIFETIME membership thinking well if I didn't like it by the end of the 30 days trial I could just cancel my plan...but as soon as I completed the process my 30 days was waived immediately and my Credit Card was charged the Lifetime Membership price...So I really did not get the option to see if I liked the game to continue the subscription. :(
I'm not 100% sure on this but I think if you choose any of the other subscription plans (30,90,180 days etc) you have the option to cancel before they charge your credit card. It's only if you choose the Lifetime Plan that you get charged immediately. Sadly I found this out the hard way...lol

Overall I give this game a 9/10

As the title says great game while playing but the end game content is still lax as of this review. Though I do like how they are releasing new content every month like a comic book. Battle system is unique and real time. Graphics are amazing. Glitches are present though you can work around them.

This game is okay. Nothing special. Neat to see the DC Universe locations. Being a PVP person from past games I must say this game's PVP sucks. I'll play it until I max out at lvl 30 and then I'll move on.

I was really looking forward to this. I like City of Heroes, and really enjoyed Champions Online. So, when I heard they were making DCUO I got very excited. As a fan of superhero MMOs, and a huge fan of the DC universe I thought this would be a perfect fit. Unfortunately I was wrong. While this game does not disappoint graphically, it does disappoint in almost every other category. Character customization, both the look of your toon and their abilities, is worse than Champions. Game content in general and specifically missions were rather bland. Lastly, game play was repetitive and uninteresting. I was sorely disappointed by this game. It's too bad too, because I really wanted to like it.
