More About the Author

I first became interested in writing my book, "DD 522: Diary Of A Destroyer", after meeting Freeman Phillips, a member of my church. Together we went to the the 1992 reunion of surviving crew members in Philadelphia. Men who had never had much to say about their experiences aboard the USS Luce poured out their hearts--many with tears--into my tape recorder. It was four days I would never forget. After the reunion I knew I HAD to write their story. A week spent at the Naval Academy researching the ships logs and other material helped in my chronological arrangement of the story of the USS Luce and its crew. An oral history from the lips of "those who were there", the book chronicles the destroyer from its commissioning to its sinking in less than two years by kamikazes off Okinawa.
Soon after the first edition came out, I was contacted by a crew member from Vermont who had never told his story because the memories were too painful. After reading the book, he wrote me saying that he felt that he owed his family (with whom he had never spoken a word about what he went through)the story of his survival of the sinking. I was planning a second edition with some additions and minor changes and his story was added, appearing on page 128 of the second edition which was published in 1996.
The US Naval Institute Press has been interested in the possibility of re-publishing the book in its "Blue Jacket" paperback series, but to date nothing has been done. I am a Civil War and World War II history buff, and enjoy reading Greek, Roman and US history. I am a 'retired' minister, and have also taught a few history courses in colleges as an adjunct professor, and help missionaries in South Africa. I note that my book has become a 'collector's item'and am proud of the fact. I still have a very few copies left, which I seek to save and only sparingly sell to crew members and their families. My book has also been on the prefered book list of the US Naval Institute, and has been written up in the Institute's magazine, "Proceedings", as well as "The Tin Can Sailor". I am currently working on two other books, one about a destroyer squadron, the other a theological work.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read in along time!, June 23, 1999

This book was so interesting that I could not put it down! A lot of books I read are very interesting, but few are such that it is hard to put them down and pick them up to continue. I read DD: 522 in just two days. It is very well written and fast-paced. Told in the words of those who experienced it, it seems as if "you are there"with them. They should make a movie of this book. It has elements of "Titanic" and "Saving Private Ryan"--i.e., the drama of a sinking ship and the horrors of war. I was even kind of "sad" when I finished it...I wanted it to continue, but of course it couldn't because the story ended. I cannot recommend this book too highly. (I have even started to read it for a second time already!)

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye opening book, March 16, 1999

My father was one of the survivors of the USS LUCE and by reading this book it gave me great insight into what my dad & his shipmates went through during the sinking. He never spoke about the sinking but I remember him talking about some of the antics they got into. Thank you for letting me see what these brave men went through. Now if someone would only do a movie about this great ship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Should be a movie., June 13, 1999

When I first started reading this book I could not put it down. It is very well written from the very words of the survivors of the sinking. I laughed at some of the situations the men got into and I also cried at the horror of battle. The book graphically illustrates with startling clarity what men under attack go through. Get this book, read it, and you'll want to tell all your friends and family.
