"...If you like zombies, or perhaps I should say stories of courageous people surviving in incredibly horrendous situations, then skip buying this book for now and treat yourself to his first book in the series, Dead: The Ugly Beginning. But beware, you can never read just one! What I innocently thought was a fun freebie book for the Kindle, turned into "my secret, naughty obsession", as I would no sooner finish one book in the series, then purchase the next as fast as my fingers could fly to "buy now with 1-click" on Amazon...I kid you not!"
"...This was by far the best book in the series yet. And as is his usual M.O., Mr. TW Brown leaves you begging, wanting and waiting for more."

About the Author

TW Brown is the author of the Zomblog series, his horror comedy romp, That Ghoul Ava, and, of course...the DEAD series. Safely tucked away in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, he moves away from his desk only at the urging of his Border Collie, Aoife. (Pronounced Eye-fa)

He plays a little guitar on the side...just for fun...and makes up any excuse to either go trail hiking or strolling along his favorite place...Cannon Beach. He answers all his emails sent to and tries to thank everybody personally when they take the time to leave a review of one of his works.

3.0 out of 5 stars just o.k. Got your attention? December 28, 2012

the latest installment to the dead series is ok. better than the previous "winter" perhaps as good as the "ugly beginning". incase you were looking for a feel good but kissing review I'll go ahead and tell you to stop reading this and visit some of the others.... still here? good for you! first let me say that of the multitude of zombie books out there today Mr. brown has produced a fine product. not that it could not be better but still out paces 90% of the trash out there. still its the 10% that eludes Mr. brown and it lies mostly in character development of the primary story arcs "Steve" 'Kevin" are essentially the same " I'VE GOT TO SAVE MY ADOPTED FAMILY/FRIENDS FROM THIS, THEY ARE MY RESPONSIBILITY! DANGIT!" yadda yadda blaa blaa blaa , I can almost accept the moral high ground that these guys stand on. almost. what kills it for me is the vast amount of story devoted to these guys is overkill and utterly unbelievable ,when do they sleep! are they super human? its a valiant attempt by Mr. brown to entertain and keep a fast pace story active and full. yea. I would like a little(no A LOT)more depth and substance than "race to the next "only I can solve every problem that comes along" development. but then I guess it would be too much invested to then go and kill one one of them. Or would it? the short takes or vignettes or what ever the heck Mr. Brown calls them are the best part for me. with just a tiny bit more story they would cover the spread and I would forget "Kevin and Steve". its almost as if the shorts are for the real world , a truer reflection of human nature and "Steve/Kevin" are the fantasy pubescent wet dream. too bad really. but lets hope that Mr. Brown grows into his world to become an adult. that is why I will continue to buy the dead series as I have everything else that Mr.brown has written in my feeble attempt to help him achieve his dream of "hitting it big" after all he still has 6 or 7 more books to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better and Better December 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This series is never boring. Each book delves deeper into the decisions every survivor must make. They all have to figure out what they are willing to do to stay alive. Is their own survival more important than anyone else's? Will they sacrifice themselves or sacrifice everyone else?
While both Steve and Kevin believe they have the best plans to keep their groups alive, their budding god complexes are hitting a very hard Reality wall. They are starting to realize that only about half their decisions are the right ones, and the wrong moves are literally biting back at their loved ones. While a lot of their angst is well written and understandable, at their core, neither trusts anyone else enough to give up any real control. The end of the book underscores their messianic and masochistic tendencies.
Aaheru is turning himself into a combination of god and Hitler and I can't wait to see him put down, really hard. Juan and his group need to have their own book. How about "Tight Like A Tigah"? Some humor would be appreciated about now. It would be a nice change-up to have Kevin and Steve as vignettes and let the other groups take center stage. I enjoy this series of books and hope to read many more of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Death And Undeath In Winter August 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am still engrossed in this series and will continue on. I have one small criticism. I think that this book and the "Dead: Winter" book might have been combined into one "Winter" book. The story still finds the survivors in the deadly grip of winter and still more well established characters are eliminated. The leader of one of the groups, for the second time, has found that those he is trying to protect have been taken prisoner by another faction. In this case a woman and military leader of a small group of military leftovers. So, once again, he sets out on a mission with a female guerrilla fighter helpmate to save them. Another group leader realizes that his mountain refuge is about to be overrun by the undead and so bugs out with supplies, his daughter and a few others, leaving the rest of the uninformed group to their fate (humanity at its best). Yet another small group of military has turned to total ruthless control of the local civilian population and a few survivors decide to go AWOL from this "community" just prior to an undead horde rolling over it. After losing many good people on a supply run, still another group leader has a positive surprise on a last ditch search for a missing girl. In a couple of other areas of the world a self-proclaimed Egyptian Pharaoh may soon find himself alone on a ship of the dead and a plucky British matron and her girl sidekick press on to zombie occupied London searching for something important that has yet to be revealed. Of more interest is the continued odd behavior of the zombie-children. And, the leader of one of the more successful survivor holdouts may have just made the biggest mistake of his life by allowing a turned child from his own group to go free. Plus, inevitably cannibalism has reared its awful head proving once again humanity has more to fear from itself than the walking undead.

4.0 out of 5 stars What is going on with these zombies?! April 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Winter continues (and no, there are no appearances by the Starks of Winterfell) in this entry in the series and I definitely began to feel like the characters as I worked my through this one: is winter EVER going to end? I had a little trouble getting through this one as the progression of the story felt like it was getting bogged down in the doldrums of winter. However, there is still plenty of action and new developments to keep fans of the series interested and excited for what's to come! And more of that strange behavior from a certain type of zombie keeps popping up in this one. I can't wait to (hopefully, fingers crossed) find out why this is occurring!

I applaud TW Brown for the tragic ending to this book, which is what really keeps me so excited about Dead. Not a lot of authors have the guts to approach such a development when we all know it would be the harshest of realities in such a scenario.

The weak have no place in this new world. Unless you consider the buffet. There is no mercy on the fallen except for a quick death.
