I really enjoyed the stories in this book. There is plenty of variety for every kind of reader. Favorites would be: Indian Summer, A Break in the Old Routine, and Plundered Booty. I like that we are given some information about each author as well as other works by him/her.

Indian Summer in Deadly By the Dozen,
This review is from: DEADLY BY THE DOZEN (Kindle Edition)
Indian Summer perfectly captures the hard life of a Montana ranch wife as well as the pure grandeur of Big Sky Country. I was drawn in immediately and delighted by the unpredictable twists and turns of this masterfully written short story. Simply captivating!

This book was the perfect read for a week of appointments, sitting in waiting rooms and whipping out my Kindle for ten minutes at a time! All the stories in here were capably written, and all captured my attention in way or another. Subject-wise, a couple were a little `seen it before' to me, but that's a matter of personal taste and the writing was always solid. Special mention to 'Marigold Mourning' by Merry Monteleone, 'Little Siberia' by Erica Orloff and 'Plundered Booty' by Travis Erwin (gotta love that title!). However...the absolute stand out for me was `Indian Summer' by Lise McClendon. It was just fabulous - a great mix of good writing, good characters and a strong element of mystery. That story would stand out anywhere. Overall, I would say the collection was well worth the modest price - I enjoyed all of the stories and absolutely loved that one. |
