Review

"Undoubtedly the finest writing the mainstream comic book industry has ever seen"—St. Louis Dispatch

"Neil Gaiman is, simply put, a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him in any medium"—Stephen King

About the Author

Neil Gaiman is the NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author of AMERICAN GODS and CORALINE. His other books include the novels ANANSI BOYS, NEVERWHERE and STARDUST (winner of the American Library Association's Alex Awards as one of 2000's top ten adult novels for young adults) and the short fiction collections M IS FOR MAGIC, FRAGILE THINGS and SMOKE AND MIRRORS. With Roger Avary, he is the screenwriter of the motion picture BEOWULF, directed by Robert Zemeckis. His illustrated novel STARDUST was released as a major motion picture Summer 2007 starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro. Among his many awards are the Eisner, Hugo, the Nebula and the World.

More About the Author

I make things up and write them down. Which takes us from comics (like SANDMAN) to novels (like ANANSI BOYS and AMERICAN GODS) to short stories (some are collected in SMOKE AND MIRRORS) and to occasionally movies (like Dave McKean's MIRRORMASK or the NEVERWHERE TV series, or my own short film A SHORT FILM ABOUT JOHN BOLTON).

In my spare time I read and sleep and eat and try to keep the blog at www.neilgaiman.com more or less up to date.

This review will focus on the edition of the book itself rather than the work of Neil Gaiman (who writes every story collected here), Chris Bachalo (who illustrates the main Death mini-series) and the plethora of talented artists, some of them real masters, that illustrate the rest of this book. You can find many great reviews about the stories included in this volume right here in Amazon, checking these links: Death: The High Cost of Living, Death: The Time of Your Life

This is a beautiful collection well worth a Sandman fan's time. Perfect for people who don't own the other books in the series but enjoy the Death endless character. Because it is made up largely of stories from the other books, you might not want to buy it if you have the other novels. Cover art is gorgeous.

Death is one of the most memorable comic book characters ever. She is vital (amazing, no?), beautiful, sexy, playful, compassionate, a caring older sister to her brother Dream, that and much more. I picked up this book while browsing at Barnes and Noble last year. It was shrink wrapped and I bought it sight-unseen. It turned out to be the most beautiful surprise in book form in quite a while and it led me straight to the Sandman series so it was a double win. The book compiles the major story cycles that involve Death as a protagonist (there are more cameo appearances throughout the Sandman collection) plus a collection of stunning artwork from various artists portraying Death. The book stands on its own and requires no previous knowledge of the Sandman saga.

Enjoy this book and then dive into the Sandman series to learn about the Endless family.

This book is an amazing and beautiful alternative to the more expensive ABSOLUTE DEATH. I'll admit when I ordered the book, I was not expecting such good quality but I was happily proven wrong! The quality of the book was better than I expected with its glossy heavy pages and the beautiful vivid colors! I would definitely recommend this book any Sandman fan!

If you're reading this review, I'm going to guess that you're already acquainted with Death and the rest of the Endless (if not, get reading -- The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes (New Edition) (Sandman New Editions)). This edition is a perfect choice for people who are already in love with Death or want to get to know her better.

It's a collection of stories featuring Death, her "standalone" stories, a couple random bits (including a sex education leaflet featuring Death and a reluctant John Constantine), and some beautiful portraits of Death by various artists.

For the price, the quality is amazing. The cover is high quality, the dust cover is beautiful, the paper is glossy and heavy, and the printing is first rate. I bought it for myself, but my first thought in turning through the pages is what a great gift it would make for anybody who loves Gaiman and the world he created with Sandman (selfishly, though, I still kept mine for myself). Even if you own most of this content elsewhere, it's worth buying.

The artwork in this volume is outstanding, as with the rest of the Sandman series and the colours in this book are reproduced well. The binding is nice, and the paper is of good quality, as you might expect with a book of this price. Highly recommended for Sandman fans, and especially if you like Death from the series.

This book looks really great, big size, good printing quality and a dust cover to protect it. The compilation, presented in this book revolves around one of the remarkable characters of the Sandman series - Death of the Endless. Drawn by diffenet artists, those stories offer a deep discription of the character. The book also has a number of artworks of Death compiled in a gallery at the end of the book. This is book you need to have in your collection if you like comic books or Niel Gaiman or beautiful collector editions.
