DecWindows Motif Operator's Guide, May 16, 2002
This review is from: DECWindows Motif for Open VMS (Paperback)
Most Motif implementations are under Unix, and so all Motif documentation (except for this book) assumes you are running Unix. This becomes a problem when you find that Motif depends A LOT on various environment variables and default installation paths.
A VAX or Alpha based OpenVMS system has a different mechanism for doing environment variables, and entirely different installation paths for Motif. DecWindows Motif even has different names for the X-windows applications (DecTerm instead of XTerm, for instance).
This book does an excellent job of explaining the OpenVMS implementation of Motif, the paths used in OpenVMS for Motif, the major user applications, and how to customize your use of these applications. I have not found the OpenVMS version of this information in any other Motif or X-windows manuals (O'Reilly and OSF included).
Note that this book is aimed exclusively at the Motif user application level. It has no programming interface information. For programming purposes, you will still need the O'Reilly "Motif Programming Manual" vol 6A and 6B. But this book fills a unique niche of OpenVMS information in a complete and readable way.
