The DELTA 17-908 1/4-inch chisel bit is designed for use with a mortising attachment mounted on a drill press to cut square holes for various sized mortise and tenon joints. This bit's 5/8-inch shank (chisel) comes with a 1-7/8-inch depth capacity and fits DELTA and Jet benchtop mortisers, as well as most other drill presses with 5/8-inch shanks. This bit's central drill removes most of the material while its hollow chisel squares off the corners of the hole. Built for professional use, this bit features high quality, Austrian-made steel for added sharpness and longevity. This set includes one drill bit and one chisel.

This high-quality chisel and bit set will fit the Delta 14-650 Hollow Chisel Mortiser and the 17-935 and 17-924 Mortising Attachments. Constructed from select steel, they maintain their sharpness longer than standard bits. The center drill removes a majority of the material while the hollow chisel squares off the corners of the hole. Includes one chisel and one bit per set.

This product delivers what it promises consistantly. The only problem with it is that unlike my 5/16" bit set, this bit is easy to snap in hardwoods like maple, even when adjusted to the manufacturers specifications. To compound the problem, it is hard to locate the replacement bits that are advertised on the side of the packaging. I recommend taking time to clear this bit of any debris between every cut to avoid causing the bit from snapping due to clogging between it and the outer chisel.

I ordered this set to replace the one that came with my mortiser. The original had cut probably 80 inches of 1" deep mortises. I expected that because it was "Austrian" that the Quality would be better. NOT! The amount of metal in the bit is roughly 1/3 the metal in the OEM bit. I should have known better,I put it in the Machine and made just two cuts before it snapped. I will be calling Delta in the morning to find out if they have anything available that will match the OEM Ouality. Tool crib customer Service could not tell me.

First unit lasted 10 mortise cuts (3/8" deep)in red oak before bit broke. Unable to find replacement bit, bought second set to finish job. Bit lasted 12 mortises. If it is this fragile, replacements need to be readily available. I am not a rookie. This was not abuse of the tool.
