Great Moderately Priced Saw!,

This review is from: DELTA 36-444 10-Inch Contractors Saw (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is the first table saw I've bought, and I have been greatly impressed with how easy it is to produce accurate cuts with it. It takes some time to put together and set up (a few hours for me) but it is well worth the time spent. Overall, setup was not very difficult, but a little extra time spent making sure the splitter and fence line up perfectly with the saw blade pays off. Once set up, the saw works beautifully; it is easy to set the rip fence to the desired width and get a perfect cut. My first project involved ripping 1" thick cypress, and the saw went through it with no problems. The stand is designed in such a way as to act as a dust chute, funnelling the saw dust toward the rear of the machine & keeping it out of your way. The only drawback is the limitation of the rip fence to 30" to the right of the blade, but other fence systems are also available with the same saw. I definitely recommend purchasing a mobile base at the same time if you need to move it much at all. Overall, this is an excellent saw. I would definitely buy this saw again.

I have owned this saw for over 2 years and have been happy with it the entire time. I use it from everything to Kitchen Cabinet Building to Childrens toys. This saw is heavy for a contractor saw so I would recommend a mobile base if you intend to move it around. The fence shipped with this saw is dead on accurate. When I first got it I would double check the widths and each time it was right on accurate. I now no longer use a tape to measure with this saw. The fence is only 30" which can be limiting at times, however any of the better fences on the market are a simple bolt on process. The blade that ships with the saw is a weak point. I switched it out with a forrest WWII and I now get glass smooth and accurate cuts. One advantage with this saw, is that you can add on to it later. Start with the standard fence and if you need more just order a better fence later. The difference between this saw and the Saw with the better fence will not save you much more than ordering the fence later. All the way around a great saw, especially for those just starting to get into woodworking.

first off, it is what it is... a 1-1/2 hp saw. not a 3hp cabinet saw. so no griping about power.but do hook it up 220v to get it up to 2hp, every little bit helps. it can handle pretty much anything... with an appropriate feed rate. my purchase was simple, i didnt have the [money] to drop on a unisaw, so i came back to reality and chose the contractors.the set up was simple with the good instructions that came with it. takes about 3 hours to get it up and going. i was impressed to see that the fence was already accurately aligned. plan on buying a blade with this saw. mine came with a steel blade. basically worthless unless you have a hobby sharpening blades. [Another brand] offers some decent bargains on blades so the first blade doesnt have to break the bank, just be efficient. my biggest recommendation for this saw is its ability to be upgraded. you can add cast iron extensions, upgrade the fence, even add a sliding table. pretty flexible with a fair initial cost. my only complaint is that this saw is a right tilt. delta still doesnt offer the contractors in a left tilt. you can get it on the unisaws, but not contractors.

Super saw for the money!,

I started making sawdust several years ago and purchased the Delta contractor's saw six months ago. Assembly instructions were clear and assembly and adjustments were not difficult. I was pleased with the workmanship and production tolerances. You will need a friend to assist in placing the cast iron table on the legs, it's too heavy for one person to lift in place. This also means that a mobile base is needed if you plan to move the saw occasionally. Take the time to clean and protect your cast iron table and cover it when not in use and it will always look good. While assembling the saw, I rewired the motor for 220v operation. With a good blade, this saw rips 2" oak and poplar without any indication of motor strain or vibration. If you have a table saw and are considering upgrading, I encourage you to go ahead and do it. Once you use this saw, you will wonder why you waited so long to upgrade.

my first big tool buy,

I'm a self taught woodworker so when it came time to buy my first big tool I read reviews, talked to shop owners and found this to be the best for the money I could find. I read that the table saw is the heart of a good shop and this has been true. I've used it to resaw cherry into 3/4 x 6 boards from 3 1/2" thick x 18" wide stock and made my wife a lovely sofa table & mirror to match. I would buy this saw again in a heart beat. Just don't be afraid to buy a great saw and a very good blade -- it's a match made in heaven.

Great choice for the money,

This is my 3rd table saw. I purchased it in July of 2002. I bought another front & back rail for it so I can now cut 54" right and 36" left. I also needed another tape to measured that distance...It is also being fed with 220. Its quiet, no vibrations, very little dust and with plenty of power. I would recommend this saw to anyone. It is heavy so the mobile base is a must if you need to move it. mrmakeit

I bought this tool at Amazon.com. The extension wings are warped and I could not get the rip fence parallel to the miter slot, so I made my own extension wings and upgraded the fence to a Vega system. Other than that and a few blade adjustments, this system has worked very well for me.

If you plan to buy the saw from Amazon, the saw will be delivered by a trucking company because its too heavy for UPS. You'll either need to get help to unload the saw from the truck or open the box in the truck and unload part by part. The rip fence and fence guide came slightly damaged and I suspect it was damaged even before it left the factory - the box showed no signs of damage but the items were dented. Because the damage wasnt great enough to be worth the hassle of trying to return a 5-foot long box and then have to wait an unknown time for a replacement, I decided to keep it damaged - it leaves a bad taste though. Delta or Amazon probably knew of the damage and was betting (correctly) that it wouldnt be returned The saw functions beautifully - its sturdy and all the parts that relate to alignment can be adjusted. Couple of minor complains - I wish the blade tilt wheel would have a positive stop at its maximum tilt - as it is now, the wheel feels like its tightening rather than stopping. I also wish the power cable didnt lead out of the dusty inside of the saw - a hole through the side and a rubber grommet would solve that. If I had to do this again, I would have bought this in a store instead of by mail order so that its easier to return damage parts.

The real deal. Power power power!!! great fense. Only one bad thing the blade that comes with it, its junk, toss it out! buy a freud or a forest and a mobile base. Strong very well made, you won't be disapointed.

I purchased this saw with the extension table, Delta Unifence and the mobile base. I've since added the Biesmeyer riving knife, Biesmeyer overarm blade guard, Delta sliding table attachment and built a better vacuum system. The sliding table attachment makes the saw extremely accurate for cross cutting and I've had no problems with the quality of rip cuts with the Unifence. I've used it for just about everything over the last four years from cabinets to 8/4 oak flooring strips. The only problem I've had with the motor's power output occured when I was rip cutting green lumber with a bad twist-- when I've asked the saw to cut material that I shouldn't have. I've thought about buying a 3hp or 5hp cabinet saw, but this one does everything I need and the money was better spent on a quality bandsaw and lumber without a nasty twist.
