Very nice medium price dust collector,

I've had one of these for about a year now. It works well, although you do want to wear hearing protection around it. Delta was shipping 30 micron bags with it when I bought it and I immediately sold those and bought 5 micron bags. (Delta should be ashamed to give you 30 micron bags with this thing. If they are giving buyers 5 micron bags now, I raise my rating to 5 stars.) Also, while it may kind of work on a 120 v/15 amp circuit, you are much better off wiring it as 220 v. No more circuit breaker popping then.

My wife gave me a 50-850 for Christmas. I love it. The fit and finish are excellent. I find it to be surprisingly quiet, though you still need hearing protection for prolonged exposure. My product manual indicates that a 20 amp, 115 volt circuit is required. Perhaps this explains the previous reviewers breaker trips when using a 15 amp service. The castors are sized appropriately so the collector rolls well. My only complaint is over the lack of a place to easily grab the collector when moving it around the shop. The temptation to use the power cord like a dog leash is strong. This is a minor gripe, however. Your eyes and lungs will thank you for getting one of these.

This year, Santa (bless her heart) brought me the above dust collector. Once I got it going in my shop, I really liked it. Quiet, powerful, and did an excellent job for two days before the motor burned-up. No problem, I took the motor assembly back to the place of purchase, and it was replaced.....no questions asked. The only complaints I have about this system pertains to the dust bags. Going to five micron bags on the part of the manufacturer should not be an after thought, and second; who's idea was it to leave one dollar's worth elastic banding out of the bottom bag anyway? This leaves me to assume that the unit is probably built in Taiwan by personnel that have never used one in a shop. If it is built in the good old USA, then that Design Engineer, Mr Tightwad, should be soundly spanked!

First - Great deal ... Ordered on Sunday afternoon - delivered on Thursday afternoon - Perfect condition - Outstanding job. Now the machine - it's big. If you have a small shop like mine this will fill up a big piece of it so be ready. The motor is very heavy duty and seems to run fine on 110v 12/2 wire with 20 amp breaker. Assembly is not bad and took about an hour. Instructions are pretty good but about what we've all come to expect with translation back and forth from English to Chinese. You will need to fully tighten the motor hold down bolts - they forget to tell you. Turned it on with the bare hose (a short length of 4" hose comes with it) hooked up to the lathe. Did some trial turning and it had very good suction - it will be much better when I add a hood. Overall quality seems very good. Base and swivel rollers nice & sturdy, motor is a beast, fit and finish great - no blemishes. Drum support struts varied from picture - they are stamped steel not tubes. Strong enough to do their job though. One surprise was that it came with a plastic bag (and a spare plastic bag) instead of the woven bag shown in the picture. I felt a little bit ripped off for that but since it will get changed out for a pair of 5 micron bags from Penn State who cares? The 30 micron bag is no good unless this thing stays outside the shop. The bottom bag does leak at the flange and would probably benefit from a 20" bicycle tube gasket or duct tape. The unit is surprisingly quiet and nowhere near the noise of a shop vac. I think it's a better deal than the DC1BXL or DC2 from Penn State even after the replacement bags are added.

I see most reviewers are very happy with their DC and rate it high... Having owned and used other collectors I find this unit acceptable. Powerful as it may be it does run LOUD.. Don't care what others think... the unit is LOUD..Yes you can talk over it but running a saw the same time is more noise then I expected.... Delta fit and finish is so...so... ie., spot welds rather then full weld.. crappy upper bag hanger, crappy lower bag stand supports... besides that, Delta provides a "grab-bag" of nuts and bolts... You end up short with the nuts and end up extra on the washers and bolts?! My unit is attached to 4" PVC manifold and really works good... but just a little better then my JET 650 CFM did... My wife likes it alot and if she's happy, I'm happy... All and all for the price of the unit I don't think you can do better and Delta is a good company that stands behind their oversea's made products.. If it were prefect in EVERY respect then I would give it 5 full stars but it isn't...

Couldn't get any better!,

Although I've never owned a dust collecter before, I couldn't imagine another one being any better. After reading other reviews of this product I really expected it to be alot louder than it actually is. In fact mine is farely quiet. Other reviews also spoke of tripping circuit breakers and blowing fuses, but I have had no such problems. I use it in my work shop two or three days a week, not commercially. It seems to be well constructed and sturdy. The supports for the bag holder which is located between the top and bottom bags could use some reinforcement where they are attached to the metal base. They have a little flex at that point and I don't know how that compares to other brands. Finishing , all I can say is that I am a Delta fan and if you have any Delta Power tools this one is built with the same level of quality as the rest.

I'm working out of a makeshift shop (4 mil plastic shroud) in a walkout basement until I can move into my house that's being built and realized after a few hours worth of using my Bosch contractor table saw and router that things were going to get too dusty too quick unless I took some anti-dust measures.I researched all the brands and talked to a good number of knowledgeable guys at the local woodworking store and decided (or rationalized) on the Delta 50-850. I took a hard look at the AP400, but knew that although it may meet my current needs, I would eventually want another intake port and more HP/CFMs. Also, I was honestly impressed by the Jet and Grizzly machines, but what can I say, I'm a Delta guy! Plus, I liked that it came standard with a 5 micron bag versus the standard 30 micron bags. I got the box home, unpacked it and wasn't surprised to have it easily put together in about 45 minutes. Delta has always impressed me with their no-nonsense, K-I-S-S approach to power tools. Their elegance is in the basic simplicity of design. That being said, I did experience some angst when the directions said put flat washers on the screws before the lock washers .... seemed a little odd having the flat (big) washers on the outside, but oh well, I guess ACTUALLY following the directions would seem a little strange to anyone. So then came time to put the bags on. Read so many reviews about how difficult it was or what a pain it can be. A total non-issue -- easy as could be without one hiccup. Maybe Delta added the "lower dust bag retaining clips" since the other reviews, but I had no problems whatsoever. With my assembly having gone so well, I was excited to fire this thing up. I finished reading the instructions, went to attach it to the port on the back of my saw and realized the 2-1/2" side of my 4" to 2-1/2" adapter was exactly the same size as the Bosch's exhaust port. Quick trip to the Blue team and I found a suitable rubber plumbing adapter that worked. With that minor issue out of the way ... I'm ready. The moment of glory when I get to hit that big green 'ON' switch. So I do. It runs for about 3 seconds and then cuts off. I'm checking the reset button when my girlfriend comes downstairs with a lit candle. Ok, I may be a little slow but I quickly figure THIS ONE out. Used my biggest gauge extension cord and found a 20-amp plug (in the laundry room), fired 'er up and WOW!! Not too loud at all and used one of the hoses (remember, one is included. I bought an extra one.) to clean the place up a little before trying out the saw. Ran it all night long as I used the saw and didn't see one ounce more of new sawdust. Very impressive! I did notice that the smaller particles (the most dangerous ones) were still suspended in the air (kind of hazy), but I plan on buying the one micron bags and eventually an ambient air cleaner for added protection. 5 Reasons to buy the Delta 50-850:

This unit is better than I expected. The price is good. The box was intact on arrival but the styrofoam was broken. Never-the-less the unit was undamaged. Went together in about a half-hour with no help. Agree with others about the lockwashers. They belong next to the nuts not the bolt heads. Also (and Delta admits this is a problem with several manuals) they never tell you when to tighten the "finger-tighten-only" assemblies. Please don't forget this step or thing will collapse quickly. Also, their "helper" clips for installing the lower bag are unecessary, it's not that hard to do as long as you thread the steel band through the "belt" loops. Don't like their 4" twin-wire hose clamps so I got some stainless band clamps. I intend to convert the motor to 240 volts as I did with my saw. They just work better that way and you have less voltage drop in the cords. An added bonus is an increase in horsepower due to the better magnetic properties of the induction fields in the windings of the motor. Strongly recommend this unit. It will also interface well into a whole-shop 6" piping system.

I had some 5/4 maple to plane down to 3/4. I kept imagining my planer's 4-in dust port sticking out into space like a giant chip spewer, and I was kind of dreading doing the work. I knew I'd have to build in an extra 45 minutes to sweep up, not to mention the "atmosphere" the chips would create during planing.I got online on Sunday night. Friday when I got home from work, there was the box. Assembled it that evening in my living room and Saturday, hooked it up with the 8' length of hose it comes with (Pretty good hose). I also connected the cyclone chip separator I'd ordered at the same time. By the way, the metal garbage can is becoming a thing of the past. Home Depot and Orchard Supply don't carry them. I went to the neighborhoon hardware store and fit the cap to the can. After the last board was a smooth, flat, straight 3/4, the air was clear, and in fact the 50-850's bottom bag only had about a pocketful of chips (which you can see because it's clear - I like that). I'd made about 20 gallons of chips, but they all stayed in the metal garbage can. Maybe even more important, the planer didn't clog up because the chips were drawn away. Previously if I forgot to unplug the machine and sweep it out inside, the chips would either bog down the unit, or worse - they'd get between the knives and the wood, leaving pock marks in the work. I won't plane without a dust collector ever again. Can you imaginge the smile on my face? If you are getting tired of spending as much time cleaning up as shaping wood, you're ready for this baby. Also, I was not expecting the four lower bag clips. They make putting the bottom bag on extremely easy. The clips hold the bag in place while you fit the belt on. A snap (literally) for one person with two hands. Assembly: I used the extra nuts to go belt-and-suspenders attaching the motor to the base. My eight-year-old son held the metal drum in place while I attached the legs, but otherwise it was just one bolt at a time. Treat yourself. Also, it's the best price in years.

This is a great dust collector. I bought it soon after getting my Unisaw, because the dust it created was too much to deal with. It picks up almost every particle. In reguards to the circuit breaker tripping referred to in other ratings, I have only had the circuit breaker trip once, and that was the one on the dust collector, not the house panel. I installed a seperate circuit with 12 guage romex, a 20 amp breaker, and a single outlet.
