When the fighting ends, the fun begins

"Pure pleasure" --The Observer (U.K.)

Seen on public television

As World War II ends, thousands of British soldiers get “demobbed”—demobilized and sent back into civilian life. Among them are Captain Ian Deasey (Griff Rhys Jones, Alas Smith & Jones) and Lance Corporal Dick Dobson (Martin Clunes, Doc Martin). Deasey and Dobson have had a “good war,” much of it spent entertaining the troops with their bawdy stage routines. But after serving four years in the North African desert, they find it hard to adjust to peacetime London and long for the stage lights once more. Soon they’re performing a cabaret act at the Blue Parrot nightclub, but their personal lives may get in the way of their professional ambitions.

Sharp writing and a stellar ensemble cast--including comic great Les Dawson in one of his final roles--round out this nostalgic comedy drama about post-war Britain. Also starring Amanda Redman (New Tricks), Simon Williams (Upstairs, Downstairs), Samantha Janus (Pie in the Sky), and James Faulkner (The Bank Job).

5.0 out of 5 stars ˝ humor ˝ drama ALL 1940s post-WWII wonderful March 4, 2011
A dramatic comedy with ample Vaudeville snippets of suggestive song & dance comedy routines. A period series of post-war London and the people who had to learn to live without the war. They were changed. The costumes, sets, and locations are period realistic in detail and delight. That's worth the watch itself. The story is with comic appeal but also has the tenderness, struggles, and difficulties written into the drama to get a good look at what it was like for some of the soldiers returning on "demob" as well as the impact on family and friends.

Two soldiers who were troop entertainers during the war, have little other skills to fall back on. How will they cope? A star British cast provides 6 pleasurable, funny, and sometimes troublesome episodes, each 50 minutes.

1--Deasey (Griff Rhys Jones-`Alias Smith and Jones' `Funnybones') heads to family after WWII. His war buddy, Dobson (Martin Clunes-`Doc Martin' `Lorna Doone' `William & Mary') finds new friends but they're a bit on the shady side. Janet Deasey (Amanda Redman-`New Tricks' `Little Dorrit' `At Home with the Beraithwaites') finds her returned hubby changed. Post-war efforts catch up with them and the post-war-stage is reset.

2--Deasey tries day & night jobs till he gets the sack. Should the boys go pro o the stage? Club's blonde dancer, Hedda (Samantha Janus Womack-`Pie in the Sky' `Eastenders') looks for information on a MIA spouse. Hedda shows bare chest in more than one episode, and she can sing too. Dick weds...kinda!

3--A week Liverpool gig for "Deasey & Dobson." All does not go well. A post-war bomb. Meanwhile, back at London, Janet has her own bit of `funny business' happenings. Best friend Annabel (Tilly Blackwood) is dismayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really great comedy drama! December 26, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The movie is long, but I remained interested. Of course I love Martin Clunes!! Which is why I bought the movie in the first place. I was not familiar with the other actors before I saw this film, but was really impressed afterwards. I thought it was a very well written script with a surprise ending (at least to me). I will watch this movie again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not really very funny September 18, 2011

I like Martin Clunes so was delighted to find this video. However, there isn't a great deal of humor in this. What there is I liked but I wouldn't recommend this if you are looking for a really funny series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Music August 26, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I liked it because I like the music from the 1940's and because Martin Clunes acted in it. The other actor wasn't the best and if not for Martin Clunes acting it would not have been as good. Because it was set right when World War 2 ended I was interested because my dad was in that war.
