It's not enough to just have kids write. It's making sure they're getting more out of their writing because they see it's designed to be worthwhile. Traci Gardner's book Designing Writing Assignments helps teachers put the design needed into writing assignments assuring that both the outcome and the process is invaluable to the student. Most students dread writing seeing it as an useless exercise. Many a teacher has heard the oft said question, "Why do we have to do this?" To borrow a phrase from Home Depot, Gardner's guidance helps kids to get to "more doing," and enjoying the results of doing it. This is a must have resource for teachers who want to equip their students to be better writers.
