5.0 out of 5 stars Is it just coincidence that everyone gives this album five?, December 28, 2004

This review is from: DESTROY-OH-BOY (Audio CD)
The answer - no. That's because it's one of the best albums of the 90s - if not the best. In fact, it's just as much a punk classic as the first albums by the Ramones or the Cramps or New York Dolls. Thank god there's still bands like the Turks who beleive in the devine powers of rock 'n' roll, and that punk is a great way to bring those powers out. A vital rock 'n' roll document for one and all who want to save rock 'n' roll from the clutches of MTV and popular radio. Best songs: "Born Toulouse-Letoric", "Runnin' On Go", "Mr. Suit", "I'm Weak", and "Crying In the Beer of a Drunk Man". Than again, not a single song is bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars One more reason Midwest punk is the best, February 11, 2000

Like many white suburban punks growing up in the early- to mid-80s, I lost my way in college. With a few exceptions, punk got boring and I found myself listening to more "college" rock. By the time this record came out I was in my mid-20s and spending all of money on oldies because nothing new was any good. The New Bomb Turks almost singlehandedly revived punk rock for the next six or seven years. This album will be looked at as one now looks at "Fun House" or the Ramones first record or "Never Mind the Bollocks" or "The Clash" or "Out of Step" or "Static Age" or "Double Nickels on the Dime." Essential if you think you're into punk.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Destroy Oh-Boy!" rocks!, November 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: DESTROY-OH-BOY (Audio CD)
One of the greatest raging full-on rock records of the nineties, right up there with Zeke's "Kicked in the Teeth". Raw, raging, rocket-fuelled punk rock n' roll. Sounds like Bo Diddley, the Stooges, and the Saints played with the velocity of Motorhead. You won't listen to anything else for a week after getting it.

TRUE R-N-R or PUNK, or whatever!!! Great tunes, plus a punchy/f'ed up, strangled guitar sound. Propelled along by wild bass and drums. The vocals/lyrics are great. Saw them live when this came out-it was an intense experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragstrip Riot, you bet your butt!!, October 26, 2004
This review is from: DESTROY-OH-BOY (Audio CD)
I still remember when I bought this album..It was my junior year of college back in 1993 at University of Louisville.Browsing the punk section,I came across an album by a band I wasn't familiar with, the New Bomb Turks.I took the album to the register, put it on when I got home, and got my head completely blown off just like when I heard the Ramones for the first time. From Born Toulouse-Lautrec to Crying in the Beer of a Drunk Man,this is an aural assault on your senses and your punk rock complacency.Wow,what a freakin ride.My personal favorites are Dragstrip Riot,Sucker Punch and Tattoed Apathetic Hate Boys, but to be perfectly blunt, there's not a bad tune on the whole album.Buy it,sit down, and prepare to want to jump up and shout HALLELUJAH!!!all over again..This'll do ya just right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, August 22, 2011
This review is from: DESTROY-OH-BOY (Audio CD)
Just a really really great album. High speed rock and roll; I saw them live several times throughout the nineties and there is no singer that can get his message across like Eric Davidson. This lp should be your introduction to the new bombs turks. And believe me, it'll stick.

In the land of garage-punk albums, in the land of punk albums, (heck in the land of ROCK AND ROLL) "Destroy-Oh-Boy!!" is one of the single best albums of all time.

There is not another garage/punk band in history that put out an album this good, not the Hives, not Rocket From The Crypt, certainly not the Strokes, not even the New Bomb Turks managed to top their own debut.

Its cut after cut after cut of rock 'n' roll so fast, primal, raw and hooky that if you aren't throwing yourself around the room by the time you hit "Dragstrip Riot" its because the album somehow killed you.

Through the entire album, the riffs kick, the guitar-tone is scuzzy and raw in the most beautiful of ways, the drummer hits so hard he sounds like he's gonna break his kit, and Eric Davidson yells his fool head off in one of the best rock 'n' roll, twangy, cool guy voices ever. Seriously, he's the best punk frontman I've ever heard. If Iggy Pop attacked his material with the energy of the sun, he might sound like Eric Davidson.

Of course, all the energy in the world wouldn't be worth much if the songs weren't any good and thankfully there is not a weak track on this baby. The album is packed with very strong hooks, whether they be musical (the riff on "Born Toulouse-Lautrec" always gets stuck in my head) or vocally (check out the "Da-da-da-da Dragstrip! Da-da-da-da Dragstrip! Da-da-da-da Dragstray yip!" on the amazing "Dragstrip Riot").

Lyrically the Turks (a group of English majors) are more clever and detailed with their jabs at society than you might think. For example the opener, "Born Toulouse-Lautrec" attacks pretentious art types: "'My work,' he says, 'is so complex'/Not so much you wouldn't sell it at an auction!"

I just can't say enough about how amazing this album is, it just might be the most rock 'n' roll album of all time. Thats why I shilled out $18 for a used copy, it was worth every single penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Album. Ever., June 18, 2008
This review is from: DESTROY-OH-BOY (Audio CD)
I bought this for $10 at a Turks show in Des Moines, Iowa in 1993. I own probably about 700 albums, everything from Elvis to the Beatles to Dylan to the Stones to Iggy to the Clash to the Sex Pistols to Nirvana to the White Stripes, and this tops them all. To call it the best punk record ever, or the best garage rock album ever, or the best obscure album ever, is to damn it with faint praise. In the age of the iPod, the old question of "top five desert island albums" seems obselete, but if I could have just one, it would be "!!Destroy-Oh-Boy!!"

It's not a flawless album. The recording sounds a little tinny, and the dynamic never really changes. But everything else is epic: Jim Weber's buzzsaw guitar, the bass rumble that opens "Suckerpunch," Eric Davidson's whip-smart lyrics and raw-boned delivery, and Bill Randt's cacophonous drumming. Warning: If you're the sort who thinks U2 really got back to rocking out on "All That You Can't Leave Behind," this might not be your cup of tea.

Where the hell has this one been hiding??!! I have a pretty extensive collection and somehow this one has eluded me. Let's just say better late than never...this is one ripsnorting mutha! Very much like Action Swingers or Flamethrower...just a balls out, unrelenting sonic assault. Don't know why this isn't mentioned in the same sentence as Black Flag's Damaged or Damned Damned Damned...recommended for listening after a bad day at work or when served divorce papers.
