5.0 out of 5 stars The purple gang
This is an excellent book and shows the purple gang members with lots of pictures. It did not however have in it what Iwas looking for and that was information on the area in Clare MI where the purple gang had their hideout and the tunnels that run through this area that they used for booze running

3.0 out of 5 stars Purple Photoes
I was surprised that this "book" was really a collection of mug shots of the Infamous Purple Gang. I would have liked an explanation as to how the "Mafia" in Detroit became Italian (rather than Jewish ) Dominated.

I enjoyed reading about the Purple Gang and the impact they had on Detroit. Their involvement with other mobsters like Al Capone, the rumrunning between Canada and other neighboring cities, was fasinating. I especially, like the pictures of the Purple Gang and other mobsters. I got a feel of what it was like during the 1920s.

A quality work, the black and white photos are excellent, giving a real feel for the times.Remember this is a pictorial representation,so there is not a lot of information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing, February 8, 2010

The past few months I had become interested in the Purple Gang and did a lot of online searching on the subject. Found a lot of good info and it turns out much of that "good info" were excerpts from this book. The disappointment comes from assuming there would be more detailed writing on the Purples; though it's not the author's fault that so much of the book's text can be found online. Maybe in time, I'll have a little more appreciation of the book.

Have not actually read this book yet...but I give it five stars. Why? Because it is a glimpse into the lives of some of our family members, stuff that was only whispered about in years past. I am interested in reading more.
