Good light-to-medium duty drill,

It's inexpensive, light weight and it works. If you're drilling (or driving screws) into pine 2 x 4's, plywood, etc. this drill has plenty of power. The light weight also makes it easy to use for extended periods. This is a great little drill for light-to-medium duty. Understand that if you're remodeling an old house (75+ years) where the wood feels like more like stone, you'll find it difficult driving screws and boring large holes. If you already know you're going to be drilling rock-hard materials, go get a Milwaukee Magnum (a much higher torque, more expensive and noticeably heavier tool).

Overall, this is a good drill. It's powerful, has a great chuck, isn't heavy, works well as a screwdriver, and isn't too loud. My only real complaint is that the handle isn't very comfortable. It's made only of plastic (no rubber grip), and this plastic has an abrasive pattern in it. It's not too hard to get used to (especially if you have tough hands), but nevertheless it's still uncomfortable.
Also, something I don't like about most corded drills (this one included) is that the handle is at the back of the drill, aka behind the center of gravity of the drill. So, when holding the drill you have to hold it back to keep it level, which often makes you accidentally press the trigger. Most cordless drills and some corded ones have the handle near the center to prevent the drill from tipping forward or backwards when you're just holding it up in the air. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them. Before I got this drill I was concerned about how it would perform when using it as a screwdriver because (like most corded drills) it doesn't have a clutch. For example, my dad's old corded drill has lots of momentum and no clutch, so after letting go of the trigger the drill keeps going for quite a while, which makes screwing quite difficult because it often puts the screw in too far. But, I was happy to find out that this DeWalt stops fairly quickly after letting go of the trigger (despite having no clutch) so it works well as a screwdriver. I know of some other drills that have more comfortable handles and that have the handle at the center of the drill, so if you're concerned about comfort then I suggest looking elsewhere. But, if a little discomfort doesn't bother you then this will be a great drill for you.

I like to support the American Economy but when it comes to drills your only even half USA assembled drill is Milwaukee and for the price it's no comparison. Dewalt makes a quality product. When I shop for a tool the first question I ask is what Brand do the guys who make their living with this tool use...and the most common drill i see in tool boxes is Dewalt.I DO NOT recommend ANY keyless drill, they are junk, I'm a bodybuilder and no matter how hard I wrench down a bit in a keyless drill it will work loose during operation. Have not had that issue with this drill. Also a nice size, I was going to go 1/2" but some of them tend to be longer ect and I often work in tight spaces. All in all a good quality at a very hard to beat price. (under $60 is what I paid) Only gave 4 stars because time will tell if it holds up and deserves 5. 5 stars to me says it's an exceptional product that no matter what they charge you should buy it because it will last forever...those days are gone, every is made to be disposable any more.

If you're buying this drill because you have a need for the "bubble level" (which Amazon's description says it has), research further for DeWalt descriptions which mention a level. Amazon's description is incorrect. I called DeWalt after receiving this, and was informed the only DeWalt models with a bubble level are the DWD112 (which I later purchased as a replacement for this one), as well as DeWalt Models DWD110 and DWD115. Mention of bubble levels in DeWalt descriptions can be somewhat "buried," but it is there for those models which have the levels.

I have found this DeWalt drill to be a very good medium-priced drill. I was disappointed that it did not have the level as described by Amazon, but since I wanted a keyed chuck electric drill, and there aren't many to choose from, I decided to keep this one. It's very smooth and relatively quiet - a hard worker it seems. I wish the cord could be detached for storing, but overall I think it will serve us well for years.

Beware of Inaccurate Amazon.com Product Description,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The Amazon.com product description *incorrectly* states that this drill (DEWAULT D21002 6 Amp 3/8" Drill) has a bubble level (as of 1/4/2011). It does not! I sent them an email so we'll see if they update the description.
Otherwise, I just received it and haven't had a chance to use it, but it seems to run well and the trigger seems to allow for easily maintaining a wide range of speeds, which is good. Feels fine. Not too heavy. Chuck key is attached with a yellow, rubber holder which may require some reinforcement but seems fine to me.

I needed a new drill.
Corded. Had to have. Always did well with Dewalt. One thing that influenced my decision was the Amazon description. I knew the reputation. Amazon said made in USA. "tool made in Mexico" on the side of the box. 48 hours from initial order to box on the stairs; shipped fast. Just very disappointed in the misleading description. Had I known then what I know now I would have spent the extra money for something else. OR spent less money for something I KNEW beforehand was made elsewhere. Already broke the seals on the box & used it once otherwise I would return it. |
