Controlled Finishing System for Smooth Results
This sander's 3.0 amp motor delivers 12,000 opm, a sanding speed that's ideal for creating smooth finishes on a variety of work pieces. Its random-orbit motion and 3/32-inch orbit prevent unsightly swirls while allowing for significant material removal. The DEWALT Controlled Finishing System (CFS) controls pad speed and minimizes gouging during start up, contributing to clean, consistent finished surfaces.

Since achieving a great finish is also about how well you're able to control your sander, this tool features a textured anti-slip top and body grip. This keeps you comfortable during extended periods of use and allows for excellent control--no matter how tough the job at hand is. The sander also features a dual-plane counter-balanced fan that improves handling and works to reduce user fatigue, and it weighs in at an easy-to-maneuver 3.4 pounds.

Durable, Versatile Design and Quick Disk Changes
Sanding produces a lot of dust, which can be hard on electronic and mechanical tool parts over time. This orbital sander's dust-sealed switch and sealed 100 percent ball-bearing construction combine to keep dust and debris away from critical components and ensure a longer tool life.

For added convenience, the sander accepts 5-inch, 8-hole hook and loop abrasive paper. This setup allows sanding disks to be switched back and forth quickly and easily, so you never have to choose between maintaining an efficient workflow and utilizing the perfect grit.

Convenient, Integrated Dust Management
Dust management is critical when performing sanding and stripping tasks, and DEWALT has it covered with a high capacity dust bag. This bag features a built-in vacuum adapter, so you can choose to utilize it with or without a shop vac or an extractor based on where you are and what applications you tackle most.

This 5-Inch Random-Orbit Sander comes with a DEWALT warranty package that includes a three-year limited warranty, a one-year free service contract, and a 90-day money back guarantee.

I used one of these sanders to remove heavy textured paint from the plaster walls of my 1890's Victorian in Maryland. This involved sanding every inch of a 3000 square foot house with heavy grit (60 grit) paper over a three month period. I estimate that I ran this unit for over 30 hours a week for the entire three months without a break. I still have it and it works fine.

The unit has a couple of problems that I noted over time:

1. The dust collector is cloth over a steel spring that tears where the cloth meets the hard plastic base of the dust collection bag.

2. The pad that accepts the hook-and-loop paper sometimes tears when removing the paper. This is easily replaced, but isn't cheap to do.

3. While the dust collector works pretty well (until it tears, that is), it is small and you have to stop work often to empty it. This is not a problem with the small jobs I use it on now, but it was annoying when I was sanding the walls.

4. Paper is costly and you will have to be careful of which brand you buy. There are some sanders with just 4 dust collection holes, while this one has I think 8, so you need to buy the paper that is right for the sander. They do sell it in 25 sheet packs, which cuts down on the cost. We used about 10 such packs, each costing about $10 to $15 at the big box store near us.

One final bit of advise: Always wear a resperator or face mask when sanding paint. Safety glasses are a must too.

before this unit, I had an off-brand $30 4" square pad sander that I used to polish the intake manifold on my car. It burned out after probably less than 40 hours of use.

I bought this sander as a replacement when I bought a house and decided to refinish the wood floors. I rented a drum sander to remove the bulk of the old finish, but I had to trace around the edge of all the rooms to remove the material. I bought this sander for $69 at Lowes and about 20 sheets of 40 grit paper, and this little sucker hummed away for hours and knocked out all the excess finish.

After about a week of walking over the exposed wood, painting walls, and moving scaffolding, I had to do a once-over on the wood to clean it up. I hit the whole floor (about 500 sq. ft.) with 60 grit, then did it again with 100 grit. This little sander cleaned it up beautifully, and I was surprised that it ran under heavy cyclic loading for about 5 hours without a hiccup. My knees didn't do as well.

I'm glad I bought it and expect that it will withstand many more hours of continued abuse.

Edit 7/15/2011: So I've owned this sander since October of 2006, and I'm happy to say that it has had years of heavy use now. I just refinished my kitchen floor with it! I used a vacuum adapter to connect it to my shop vac as I was reluctant to pull a drum sander into the small space. Kitchen is about 150 ft^2, it did wonderfully well, and I minimized the dust with the shop vac attachment. Very happy with this sander.

DEWALT D26451K 3 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag
Well, my old 1/4 sheet sander finally died, and I decided to go with the DeWalt random orbital sander, based on the mainly-good reviews. Let me tell you, I am blown away by how well this thing works. I am finish sanding several pine chests I am making, and the DeWalt sander is doing a beautiful job. I started with 120 grit paper, and then went right to 220 grit - great job. I had some 150 grit, but decided to skip that when I saw how good the finish was from the 120 grit.

This sander goes with the grain, across the grain, whichever way you want it and does an excellent job. Most of my sanding was on flat surfaces, which made life a lot easier, but I also sanded a rounded-top treasure chest I am making, and it did a great job on that, too.

The sander is not too heavy, and the vibration is well balanced, so my hand did not fall off after three hours of sanding. Yes, the sandpaper discs are somewhat expensive, but when you factor in how well and fast this thing works, it may be a wash. The cloth bag also did a reasonable job catching the dust.

Can you tell I am very happy with this sander?

I do a load of furniture, and floor refinishing. I've used a large variety of sanders, square, belt, orbital, and commercial grade floor sanders.

With orbital sanders in this price range there really aren't many differences. There are quite a few 3 amp orbitals, Bosh, Makita, Dewalt, and Milwaukee all make them, and they are all very similar in construction and price. They all have metal-ball bearing construction, all have direct port bags, and can be found for under $50. Anyone who says they can tell the difference between the 3 amp models by those companies is overselling their expertise, especially those who claim to be the experts.

I just have good experience with all tools DeWalt makes. I also have their 10amp VSR drill, 8amp jigsaw, 10amp 4-1/2" angle grinder, 18volt brad nailer, and 2 tank air pressurizer.

My dad and I have gone through two of these DeWalt orbitals, and we currently own two. The older of the two was very used when I started remodeling with my dad, and since then we have sanded 20 kitchen cabinets; all the seams of individual floorboards of a 1,500ft2 oak floor; two large oak tables, a fur table, and two pine tables; a dozen fur chairs; and a ton of custom trim, railings, and molding; and it still works as good as the new one I just bought. DeWalts are build solid, to last job after job and pay for themselves 100 times over.

Some people complain about dust on orbitals. Personally I just use shop fans and blow the dust outdoors and clean up the rest with a shop vac when I'm done. You could hook it directly to a shop vac and use perforated sanding disks. I like using solid disks because the sanding goes faster; there is more grit in contact with wood.
