I bought one of these to help me re-side the house. First, I am sold on using the shears vs the circular saw because of the dust. However, I have had three breakdowns on this shear, so I'm going to try another brand (maybe Pacific?, but $$, but it has high ratings). The bolts that held the head together broke several times and I was able to find bolts that fit at my local hardware store. But now part of the head called the 'eccentric' broke. On line the price is $68-$79 for this small piece. I assume this must break often, because it is way out of line with all of the other parts, so I feel like I would be getting gouged for the $. I'd rather pay extra for another one than keep going down this road. By the way, I am only about 1/2 around the house at this point, so the 'heavy duty' name for this tool leaves me questioning. I have been a faithful DeWalt user, but this tool's performance had really disappointed me.

For now, using a dusty saw in hot Florida....

shear worked well on the first 10 cuts, then the shear blade broke inside the head. Looked for a replacement part - cast iron blade the size of a pocket knife - cost $100. since it broke in the first 30 days, I returned it to Amazon and got a full refund. I need a cement shear so will try the porter cable or another brand.

I just bought one of these cement shears. It worked great... but one of the side knives broke within the first half hour of use. I was giving it very light usage, cutting 1/4 inch HardieBacker. I was very disappointed because the whole house is torn up and the job is stuck intil I get a new tool. I explained this to the DeWalt Warranty people on their toll free line. They had a new side knife here in less than 24 hours. Obviously there was a defect... and they fixed it fast. Thanks DeWalt.

Pros: Dustless. Lightweight. Portable. Quick cutting. Perfect for DIYer.
Mark/cut only on the backside of HardiPlank for cleaner cut appearance on face of siding.

Cons: 'Cuts' by tearing, resulting in rough, raised cuts. Compared to circular/miter saw with quality carbide blade, trade-off is quality of finished cut versus dust-reduction. The D28605's resulting rougher, swelled edges may be easy enough to hide/caulk/seal next to trim-work, but at exposed-cut areas like step flashing they can be unsightly and prone to greater weather/water absorption. Shearing quality is especially apparent when making angle-cuts in HardiPlank . . . the more acute the angle, the more the 'point' of the siding will break/tear/crumble when using these shears. This tearing and breakage is significantly worse on HardiShingle, making this tool unsatisfactory in that application.

The D28605 shears easily handle average installations, and can be extremely useful to do-it-yourselfers. So dustfree that you can shear HardiPlank indoors . . . impossible with circular/miter saw cuts. But if precision is required, your circular/miter saw results in sharp, clean, quality cuts . . . with sharp angles, clean joints, and no raised/swelled edges. Best quality cuts result from marking/cutting only on backside of HardiPlank . . . side knives on back of board, center cutter on finished exterior face of siding. As for HardiShingle fiber-cement siding, these shears are best left in the toolbox.

I was a concerned after reading some of the reviews on this tool but being familiar with Dewalt quality
I went ahead an bought them.....I had no problems.
I did make sure the three bolts were tight and kept the blades well oiled with WD40
Make sure you make a cut or two on a piece of scrap to get clean off any residual oil prior to use.
I found them easy to cut strait with too. The only thing I didn't like about using them
was that, When making long cuts, the waist coils up and blocks your view of the cut mark.

Purchased this tool to reside my house with hardy plank siding. Side shear broke after only one side, rplacement $61, looking at the break ,it was obvious the blade was cracked when assembled. DeWalt says oh well! Looking at other reviews, this is a common problem. Confirmed my resolve not to buy any more DeWalt tools.

I am putting up cement fiber siding panels and thought this tool would be good as not to create any dust. I had to order online from Home Depot since it isn't sold in the stores.
I got it just in time to start the job and guess what? It doesn't turn on!!! I tried different outlets, I tapped it a few times! I pressed the button repeatedly and the other button below it at the same time (which the technician on the phone couldn't even tell me what it does).
Anyway, I called Dewalt (which turns out is Stanley, Black and Decker!) and I was given the phone number of a service center. WHY should I bring it to a service center!!!??? I needed this TODAY. Not next week!!!

So the one star is really for the company more than just this product, as it seems they have NO quality control system in place. How hard would it be to plug in every tool and try them before they get packaged? Wouldn't that be more cost effective than having to deal with returns and repairs?

So now I am just going to use a circular saw and deal with the dust and probably not going to purchase another Dewalt/Stanley/B&D product.
