5.0 out of 5 stars As good as a normal portable light, November 25, 2006

This review is from: DEWALT DC528 14.4-Volt/12-Volt Cordless Fluorescent Area Light, No Battery (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have a 13W corded trouble light and actually use the dewalt more now that I own it. Having used it quite a bit, here are the observations:

1 - hook and shield can be adjusted any way to keep the light on the job and out of your eyes almost anywhere. It sits upright on the battery if you can't hang it.

2 - there is no shortage of light - and it is very wide angle (about 190 degrees) - no central hot spot with this light - its spread out

3 - although this is called a 12/14.4V light, its best used with 14.4 V packs - lamp shuts down at about 12.3 volts remaining on the pack. Using a new XRP pack, that amounts to 3.5 hours of light. Using a tired, 6 yr. old pack, it's more like 2.2 hours.

4 - The light is available in 12-14.4 and 18v models which covers all the serious tool battery systems dewalt has made (the 14.4 and 18v) - the bulb however is only 13W so the 18V lamp isn't any brighter - it just runs longer on a charge. Select whichever voltage your tools use (mine are older 14.4V tools so I have lots of batteries and picked this model)

5 - construction quality is excellent and adhere's to dewalt's standards.

6 - finally - if for some reason you want 360 degrees of lighting, the reflector / protector can be removed with the bulb on - but it is very bright, you won't have the hook to hang it, and you will probably break the bulb if it falls over, so it is not recommended. DW even puts a sticker inside telling you to turn it off now! The protector is well designed to hold on to the top of the bulb to minimize the chace of breakage in drops.

Even though I've used the 14.4 volt system for years, I never bought a dewalt light until this one - their flexible design wasn't right - the swivel head handheld design still wasn't right - but this tool puts out so much light it's perfect for almost any job. The third design is the best of the bunch and worth it if you have batteries and chargers already since nothing comes with the lamp.

Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars As much light as corded version. With 1 flaw!, January 20, 2007
This review is from: DEWALT DC528 14.4-Volt/12-Volt Cordless Fluorescent Area Light, No Battery (Tools & Home Improvement)
The best 14.4v light Dewalt produces. I have/have had both other 14.4v cordless lights Dewalt makes. The flexible light just never function like it should. Neck moved to easy and was not enough light to be useful. The pivot light seems like just a glorfied flashlight.
This Light produces ample light and sheild keeps you from being blinded. The retractable hook is nice because it can pivot 360 degrees and can be retracted flush with case. So it doesn't get caught in tight spaces, like both of my corded lights. The light produced is as bright as both of my corded fluorescent lights.
The only drawback with this light is, there is no warning when battery gets low. The light just goes out!!! No dimming to warn you to change battery. Not fun when you are under car working in dark!

I love the fact that there's no wire to worry about, and I can just use the dewalt batteries I already have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, October 5, 2010

I ordered this for use when I experience power loss (which happens fairly frequently) to provide temporary lighting. I already own some Dewalt tools which use the same battery so I have a couple of batteries already. It is great. The light is nice and bright and does a great job at illuminating a good sized area. The included hook is nice, but the fact that it sits on the battery makes it easy to place on any flat surface. Although I have the older batteries I can get about 2 hours of light from each fully charged battery. I believe the newer batteries ad an additional hour of light. The price is great for what you get, and it really does the job when you need more than just a flash light. I highly recommend it.

For working under the house, this light is perfect. It is tough, bright, and lasts longer than I do. Best of all, you don't have to get particular about pointing it in the right direction. When it runs out of juice, it will shut off abruptly, so if you are going into complete darkness for a couple hours with it, you should take a backup light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent, well built., February 3, 2009
This review is from: DEWALT DC528 14.4-Volt/12-Volt Cordless Fluorescent Area Light, No Battery (Tools & Home Improvement)
I use it with 14.4v xrp batteries, and it lasts about 2 hours and 20 min. It seems to cast more light than the wall mart corded 13 watt unit. It's built very well, dropped it several times without any issues. The switch seems kinda cheap but it works. I don't think it could be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, November 26, 2008

Well designed. The hook on the top extends to allow it to hang anywhere. This thing is really light, even with the battery attached. Light may flicker about 1-2 seconds when you first flip the on switch... but it is bright, and covers a large area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best battery light I've ever purchased, August 2, 2008

The light took my charged DeWalt drill battery without a problem, and it's the brightest battery-run area light I've ever found. We have a lot of summer blackouts on my street, and I've recently been purchasing different LED battery lights to have for such situations. If I hang it at the entrance to a room, it lights up the whole room. I can work on art projects only using this thing for light, it's so bright.
