I do trim work and cabinetry for a living, and as soon as I heard about the cordless finish nailers I knew I needed to have one (although it took me a couple of years to justify the expense). How many times I lugged my sixty pound (at least) compressor up three flights of stairs to do crown moulding in one bedroom, I can't say. No longer. When I received my nail gun I was working on a job where I was using an air nailer, but I just had to take the new tool to see how it did. I'm telling you, this tool is really heavy and a bit awkward. It is also fully up to the job of nailing stick after stick of 16 gauge 2" finish nails. If it is convenient for me to have a compressor and hose on hand, my Bostitch magnesium finish nailer is super light, powerful and well balanced- a delight. So for those smaller jobs where lugging a compressor just isn't worth it, I love this tool. Will it replace an air nailer? No way. If I had the opportunity to try one of these out before I bought it I might have gone for the older 14volt model to save a pound (this one is 8-1/2 pounds)not to mention save $90. For me, I'd rather have a lighter nailer, perhaps two batteries, and swap out batteries if I really got to a large quantity of nailing. Someday a company will come out with a cordless finish nailer under 5 pounds, and I'd drop this one instantly. Until then, though, I love my new cordless nailer. I haven't had it long enough to know how long the battery will last, but since it didn't come with two batteries I get nervous about heading to the job without a fresh charge, I don't know how this will affect battery performance by not letting it ever run down. To me, many tools don't need the super powerful batteries and their associated weight- my perfectly adequate Makita cordless drill has a 12v battery and feels like a toy after hefting this tool, although to be fair the Dewalt DC616K XRP is heavy even without the battery in. So I guess it's a love/hate thing I've got going with this tool- it's the best but I want better. Am I glad I bought it? Yes. Would I buy it again? Yes, or maybe check out the older 14v model first.

I am an "advanced" amateur, basically building my last three houses (along with lots of other stuff). This thing is probably my most favorite tool, and very versatile for framing and trim work. The straight galvanized nails are quite cheap and easy to find, with every brand I have tried working just fine. The available lengths cover a wide variety of applications. Will probably shoot 500 or more nails on a single charge. Easy depth adjustment and sinks the longest nails easily into tough pressure treated wood. Have not had any problems getting into tight places (supposedly the angled version would be better for tight spots, but I have never needed it, and I use this thing a lot). Solid construction, I don't baby this thing (of course I don't abuse it either). Hangs from its belt loop well.
You might want to consider the angled version (which seems to be cheaper than this one is right now), but I have never felt the need for it and the angled nails are quite a bit more expensive. I have no problems with the weight of this tool and I am only 150 pounds (below average size). Rarely get jams, and they are easily and quickly cleared with no tools. Quick and easy to use, works well, reliable, nails are economical to use, no air hoses to drag around, no compressor to listen to. Not much to criticize, but I guess Dewalt could lower their price some, but this is a very, very good tool. And finish nails can be used in a lot more places than I originally would of thought.

This gun is great, except for the short life span. I've gone through five of the guns over the last 2 years. I install base board in track housing, so hose free is almost necessity. I did the math and they shoot about 100,000 nails before they wear out, which could last a life time for some. My batteries are all worn out and its time to switch to a pneumatic hitachi.

You can't ask for more. The gun fires fast, no hessitation at all, the rapid fire mode makes quick work of quick work. The optional nail sizes means you will have the right nail for any job. And it fires 100+ on one battery. The work light even uses flashes to tell you when the battery is low, or a nail is jambed. This one is worth the money, I love it.

I just had to post this. I have 2 of these units. I bought the second after two + years of hard use on #1. My #2 gun has held up for 2 years +. I bought #2 because I thought something sometime MUST go wrong with #1 gun (I am not talking about the rubber re tractor or the driver piece which only failed on #1)#1 is fine still works great(go figure). I have used #1 & #2, to hang Hardi trim, siding, fence pickets, stick on 2x4s, use it on rapid fire, and of course lots of trim. They are tough, I got rid of my other 18 volt Dewalt tools (drills; replace switches too often) but keep a Dewalt trim saw (Very nice, will rip cut Hardie trim) and a Dewalt flashlight (so-so) These nailers are easy to work on and in my experience, they rarely need to be worked on. I say this after 4-5 years of steady use between 2 nailers.PS I use the Milwaukee 14 volt now (great drills) compact and full size models.

Read both the positive and negative comments before buying this. Extremely happy with this. Was concerned about the weight since I am medium built. Having used it few times, find it very comfortable to work with.

I bought this to replace a gen 1 of the same that was stolen, was happy to see they improved the driver design, much less noise after the shot. In all other regards it is identical to the gen 1 nailer. Can run trim all day on one battery, best nailer I've ever owned and I have used air nailers and 3 different battery over gas nailers.

I am a finish Carpenter and have used this nailer for the past 2 years, and thousands of nails, many homes later it works like new. I would recommend this tool as an addition to any Dewalt 18 volt set!

I just bought one of these on a famous auction site for less than the price of the two 14.4v XRP batteries it came with. I have several DeWalt 14.4v tools in regular use and needed fresh batteries.
I have a pretty full complement of pneumatic nail guns from a small pinner all the way up through a roof and framing guns. This cordless is my new favorite for those times when lugging the compressor out is just too much of a pain. Bit by bit I've been remodeling our home, including lots of new baseboard and crown molding, and I'm real tired of schlepping the compressor around. Honestly I couldn't justify paying $300+ for the amount I'm going to use this tool, but I sure am glad to have it. Check around and you might find you can get it for less than half price.

I bought this in a kit. Had it for two years but rarely used it. First job with a good many baseboards and it snapped -- stopped firing. Would wind up but nothing shot. Took it in for service. Guy told me they're garbage, sees them all the time, can't fix them at the Dewalt service center. You have to pay $200 and mail it in. If they fix it for less than that, which is unlikely, they'll refund the difference. This gun is heavy and does not get into tight spaces. The upside is obvious -- no compressor. Great idea, but it's junk. I put mine on the front lawn. It was gone the next day.
