5.0 out of 5 stars Great drill
I have the earlier version of this drill and when the batteries went kaput, I found I could buy a new drill with two batteries and a charger for about the same price of just replacing the batteries(what a gimmick!) for my old drill. This DC727KA is lighter than the old one, gets into tighter places and the chuck works great! I have a Grizzly drill that's similar, also...

3.0 out of 5 stars Right Drill...Wrong Price
Amazon's alleged super savings price is only pennies below the price of your local hardware retailer. It's alleged list price of $150 is seldom actually paid for the 12v version of this product. I've used Dewalt now for over a decade and it is my favorite cordless drill (Makita is definitely more durable but far less pleasant to use on the site). I just purchased this...

I have a Grizzly drill that's similar, also 12V, but I've had trouble with the chuck staying tight ever since it was new. I guess that's the difference between paying $69 and $119. I've used the drill quite a bit for both screwing and drilling and it can't be beat. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. I just can't figure out a good use for the heavy duty plastic case it came in. What ever happened to the great metal ones?

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful tool for every homeowner, November 17, 2006
This review is from: DEWALT DC727KA Heavy-Duty 12-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless 3/8-Inch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
When my wife asked me to replace old blinds with new wood blinds, I was scared. I am dumb at any type of house works. I used to hire contractors to do all our house work. So I bought this drill for the job because of its reputation. I used it to remove all old blinds, some of the screws were realy stuck, I could never remove them by hand if there was not this tool. During the work, I even dropped the drill from 8 feet ladder, I thought I broke it, but it kept working. Thanks to the drill I finished the job with no problem. It is powerfull tool, I tried to unscrew the DeWalt drilled screw by hand, it was hard.
One complaint, somebody here said it's light. Well after holding this tool for one hour, I felt it's kind heavy.
I also like the keyless chuck part, it's easy for me to switch between driller and screwdriver bit.

You all know that old adage of "getting what you pay for", I'd say it was probably said by someone dealing with cordless drills. I had to replace a trusted old Craftsman 9.6V that had the batteries finally give up the ghost. Faced with the prospect of just replacing the batteries I just looked at getting a new drill. I had a bunch of Home Depot gift cards laying about so I started pricing and reading reviews. I work in a General Contracting office and I put the question to all the Project Managers and subs "what brand of drill do you prefer?" The answer came back overwhelmingly DeWalt. I looked at the different models and prices and decided that the 12 volt was probably enough for me. The first order of business for the new drill was replacing my sectional garage door. I picked up a socket adapter and went to work. With a friends help I removed the old door and put up the new door in under an hour. I had to remove and put back nearly 100 screws and I had to drill seven new holes in the door frame for brackets and handles and such. It handled it all with out a hiccup.
I am greatly pleased with this drill and it's performance and quality. I'd recommend it to anyone.

When ordering, I was concerned that I was shortchanging myself by not getting the 14.4 or 18 volt. However, now that I have the drill, I am very pleased with the power/weight ratio. It was either this DeWalt or the Bosch 14.4 compact drill. The Bosch was sleeker and fit my hand better but the DeWalt's 350 torque vs 310 for the Bosch won out.

The smart charger is absolutely great.

I highly recommend this drill for light/moderate to occassionally heavy weekend project use.

This DeWalt 12v drill is a huge step up from my previous Black & Decker, a huge step up in power and quality. The kit even comes with 2nd battery and the case is of nice quality too :-)

Good drill and easy to handle. As it is 12V, it is lighter than the big 18 V brutes, yet has sufficient power for most tasks. Good balance and great chuck. I would buy again. I did not rate it at 5 stars as you can't buy it with the extended duty batteries [which last much longer].

5.0 out of 5 stars great cordless from dewalt, July 18, 2006
This review is from: DEWALT DC727KA Heavy-Duty 12-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless 3/8-Inch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was looking for a cordless with more power than my old one. This one has plenty of power for the around the house jobs that I'll be using it for. It fits comfortably in my hand and is well balanced. I can even set it down on its battery pack area and it doesn't fall down. I would recommend it to any home owner.

GOOD TOOL - I USE MY TOOLS TO MAKE A LIVING
Adjustments are easy to make. The keyless chuck is better than the ones on my older driver/drills. Plenty of power ever with larger bits. A wrist breaker if you do not adjust it properly. This is my first battery powered drill that is also an inpact drill. I like this feature. A couple of weeks ago from under a house I punched a hole in a concrete block wall without a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not all about the voltage - This is a beast, August 22, 2008

This review is from: DEWALT DC727KA Heavy-Duty 12-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless 3/8-Inch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bought this drill on sale at a large home improvement store for about the Amazon price. Nowadays everybody talks about the "voltage" implying more is always better. Whats next? 48 volts? Come on.

I considered the 18 volt version but let common sense prevail and got the 12 volt unit. My objective was a good, solid, powerful drill for general usage around the house. I wanted something I could manipulate easily and which didn't have a humungous battery getting in the way. I can tell you this 12 volt drill is a beast. I'm a serious woodworker and home repair type of guy and this drill is perfect without the ridiculous size of the higher voltage types. Nice balance in your hand so you'll feel comfortable grabbing it for many jobs.

The charger is fast and the batteries last a long time between charges.
Don't get sucked into the voltage hype. Buy this 12 volt unit without hesitation.
