I am a professional carpenter. Have been in the business since before cordless tools appeared, the first being Makita. When I started using cordless tools it seemed I had to replace them because they failed every couple years and eventually started buying Hilti tools for my business. I am spoiled with Hilti tools that sometimes cost double but last forever. I am also on the way to retirement and didn't want to spend the larger dollars to replace my cordless drill that is "missing" with another Hilti. Most of my work requires impact drivers which I have. I hope to stay busy doing only my home repairs and a little side work and chose this drill for that. I researched the net and found this newer Dewalt model rated well so I picked one up to try. I read the reviews here and could not believe someone seriously complained about the trigger being too far a reach from the grip. I wanted to review this drill too but fairly as there is so much this drill offers. Since I have owned this drill I have worked it, I am known for being real hard on tools. The batteries charged as stated. I have no complaints with the keyless chuck holding bits or in battery drain like other models. This drill has plenty of power as long as you don't expect it to replace a 1/2" corded drill. Besides power and lasting charge the batteries finally have a charge indicator showing how much power is left, a Hilti feature. The grip angle and grip size are comfortable with nice balance and the controls for forward and reverse as well as the two speed ranges and clutch easily reached. The plastic fitted drill/charger case and not a bag like other drills, another plus. This is not the perfect cordless drill and I do have complaints too. The biggest is the plastic gears. A drill at this price, $229.00 should include metal gears.Read more ›

Have only used a couple of times as the power source for an ice auger. The temps were in the teens and I was able to drill 30 holes through 10 inches of ice on one battery pack and the drill had plenty of power during all 30.

My only complaint about this drill (other than the price) is several time I have been drilling in steel, usually to enlarge holes, the bit will hang up, get stuck and the drill will then try to break my arm. So far it has failed and only left me with a slightly painful sprain, I have used plenty of corded drills that would not do that. For the size and weight of this drill I haven't seen anything that comes close to it. So be careful using this drill. There is no need for the large batteries as the 2.0 Ah batteries last a long time and charge quickly. The quick stop brake and light are some of my favorite features so that just shows you can't please everyone. I got this one to replace the 780 model that was stolen and there is a big difference between the two. However the 780 is a fine drill also and unless you need the extra power and run time for such things as drilling steel the 780 will suffice for most users.

The drill/driver was a little heavier than what I expected. It is commercial grade and is built to last. I especially liked the LED light that focuses on where you are drilling. There are different sized batteries that will fit this drill set. It came with the smallest battery. You can buy a larger battery if you are worried about running out of juice prematurely. I had a little trouble getting the charger to work. You really have to push the battery into the charger hard for it to connect. At first I thought there was a defect in the charger. The other thing I didn't like was that it did not come with any screw or drills bits. That was OK because I have plenty of extra ones, but a beginner might like to have a minimum set. Also, there was hardly any room to store bits in the plastic case that the drill/driver came in. My old DeWalt drill/driver case had lots of room for storage of parts and bits.

Have been a fan of Dewalt battery drills for many years. Disappointed in this drill because the drill bits keep falling out of the chuck. Thought at first it was me for not tightening the chuck up enough. But it turns out the chuck is junk. The drill bits don’t just come loose, the chuck opens up so wide that you would think I had a bit 10 times larger and never tightened it. It is something you have to see to believe. The torque of the motor stopping loosens the chuck. Luckily I saved my old 18v Dewalt and just changed the chuck to the old style…

Upgraded to the 20v Dewalt system from a 12v Hitachi NiCad system. And let me tell you, it was worth every penny.

Pros:
Ratcheting chuck holds very securely
The pressure sensitive speed control on the trigger works great
Batteries hold a charge for what feels like forever
Plenty of power
About the same weight as my 12v
Its pretty

Cons:
The build in flashlight is kind of annoying and can't be turned off
