Dewalt new 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Brushless 3-Speed 1/4" Impact Driver (1.5AH).

So what is the big deal about a brushless motor (BL)? If you want to get more power out of your cordless drills then a lot. Instead of using contact brushed to transfer electric to the motor, a BL motor uses electronics. First, brushes by their nature create a small arc of electric from the brush to the motor (these are the sparks you see inside the tool if you turn out the lights). This method of electric transfer results in a loss of power, the visible manifestation is the spark and heat created by the tool. Less power loss means longer life for the batteries. No brushes mean, well, no brushes to wear out. Less heat means less thermal fatigue on the tool. In summary a BL motor delivers more toques per watt and should give the tool a longer service life.
Performance
We tested the new 20v max BL against a standard Dewalt driving screws in 2x12's. We then recharged the batteries and switched them between the tools. The result was almost identical. The Brushless tool. drove almost twice as many screws as the standard brush motor.
To me this means one very important thing; longer battery life. It's my understanding that every time you charge a battery it losses a little of its life. Therefore if you are charging the tool half as much I would expect the battery to last twice as long. That is money in my pocket.
Additional features, three variable speeds. Brighter lights, New quick release for bits. Fuel gauge on battery.
Durability
My crew is tough on tools. The impact gut has been dropped, kicked, and dunked in a pool. To its credit all the abuse has not affected it at all.

What a GREAT impact!! This tool will not let you down! I work in the sheet metal trade and this tool gets used and abused everyday. I have been using the standard 18v impact for years with no problems but this new unit is a step above. First, the run time is double that of the 18v unit. The brushless motor sure makes a difference. Longer run time means less time back to the charger. Also the new battery level gauge is great too! Nothing is worse then holding a piece of duct work up only to hear you buddy's impact go dead!!! Now before I go up the ladder I can check my battery level to make sure the job will get done. The metal clip is awsome too. Its nice to have the tool right at hand to grab and go. The tool has 3 LED lights that do a nice job of lighting up your work area. When I am up in a ceiling the lights work great and even stay on after you let off the trigger. We have used the impact as a flashlight to find are way out of dark attics! There is a speed setting on the tool that lets you go low/med/high. This speed setting does not get used much. I tend to leave it on high. This impact does have higher rpms then my other 18v unit. The higher rpms make it easy to drive all the self tapping screws we use. As far as durability goes, this thing is tough!! It has been kicked around, fell of ladders, etc!!!! Still keeps going, it's great! If you want an impact that is tough as nails, has long battery life and will work as hard as you, then this is your only choice!

This impact is a big improvement from the 18V I was using before. The variable speed torque setting is amazing. I'm an electrician and I use this thing all day long for everything thing that I do and I can't get over the difference between my old impact and this one.

Received this Impact Driver and immediately put it to work on a new garage build. 110% convinced that I will use this on any build now to drive Spax screws and retire my way too heavy air nail gun. I can drive studs together better than any nail gun and the best thing is my hands aren't sore at the end of the day. Battery last super long after hours of use and rarely needed the second battery in a 12 hour work day. Drives Timber drive screws into LVL's like butter! Super ergo and fits like a glove.

I have been 'collecting' cordless drills for a while now, with my latest one being a Craftsman 19V which I am very happy with. However, I really wanted to get an impact drill this time, since I have some outdoor projects coming up, and decided to just get the best of the best instead of screwing around with heavy/low quality versions. After reading many reviews, I decided to get this brushless model (found too many complaints about chuck wobble with the older Lithium Ion DeWalt impact drills), and I am extremely happy with it.

Pros:
*It's very light weight compared with typical cordless drills.
*Since the brushless model (look for the BL logo on the box) is more energy efficient, you can get away with getting the smaller battery pack (1.5Ah vs 3Ah). This kit comes with 2 batteries and a charger, so it should hold you over for a while.
*Battery charger is extremely quick, up to 30 minutes max.
*Being able to tell the status of the battery with the push of a button is really useful as well.
*Extremely powerful.
*Quick mount/release of bits.
*Speed control.

Cons:
*Very expensive.
*Can't lock the bit into place if it is a 'double ended' bit (at least not the ones I tried, but they were 3rd party bits).
*At this price, I would have liked to see a few starter bits included.
*Wish the charger could charge both batteries at once (even my cheaper Black & Decker charging station can do this).

I highly recommend this model to anyone (not just contractors) looking for an impact drill, despite its high price tag.
