DEWALT DCK285C2 20-Volt MAX Li-Ion Compact 1.5 Ah Hammer Drill and Impact Combo Kit

DEWALT’s DCK285C2 20-volt max lithium-ion compact 1.5 Ah hammer drill and impact driver combo kit combines the fast performance of the DCD785 1/2-inch hammer drill and the compact power of the DCF885 1/4-inch impact driver to provide a well-rounded pair of tools that help everyone from steel stud framers and contractors to cabinetmakers and plumbers work their way through a variety of applications.

What's in the Box

  • (1) DCD785 1/2-inch hammer drill
  • (1) DCF885 1/4-inch impact driver
  • (2) 20V MAX 1.5 Ah lithium-ion batteries
  • (1) 30-minute Energy Star-rated charger
  • (1) Bit-tip holder
  • (2) Belt hooks
  • (1) Hard plastic storage and carrying case

Strength Defies Size

DEWALT has optimized both of these tools to withstand daily jobsite wear and tear. The 1/2-inch hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 350 unit watts out for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill/driver’s two-speed (0-600 RPM and 0-2,000 RPM) transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drill/drivers on the market.

Meanwhile, the impact driver’s robust motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Its one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 2.8-pound weight, the compact impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.

Endurance and Ease of Use

DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into both tools’ switches to provide maximum life for the tools and batteries by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology, and the included Energy Star-qualified charger has dual voltage capabilities and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. The tools’ slim handles fit easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs, and the bright built-in LED work lights above the triggers have a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

20V MAX Performance

The product development team used feedback from jobsite end users to develop new features that add value. Thanks to the design of the new 20V MAX battery packs, engineers were able to develop a slim handle design with a contoured grip that translates to comfort for contractors who use these tools throughout the day.

Other examples include the impact driver's innovative LED lights that help provide visibility without shadows in dimly lit spaces as well as the hammer drill's heavy-duty ratcheting chuck that helps to reduce bit slippage during high torque applications. These new 20V MAX tools are well balanced and compact without compromising power.

DEWALT began production of its American-built cordless power tools in its 75,000-square-foot Charlotte Manufacturing Operations facility in early October of 2013, using global materials. Customer Reviews

I highly recommend this set and just about all dewalt tools!
This 20VDC hammer drill is compact and easy to fit into tight places, but don't let the small size fool you--it's a powerful tool.
Use the other tools when I can and made Dewalt my go to tools .

I finally decided that I wanted a new drill. I'm a professional garage door mechanic and GOOD cordless power tools are essential. I've got the whole panasonic 14.4v line and I love all the tools... But the drill just didn't spin the same as anyone else's DeWalt did. If you ever felt the way the drill spins in the handle and you know quality from the way it snaps to a start and snaps to a stop, even the way it sounds, then DeWalt has it on that. This new 20vMAX line is no different. Decided I'd jump into the DeWalt line while they're introducing a brand new line. Amazon was one of the first people to carry it and I ordered this in the beginning of September, well before its October release in all the rest of the stores. My local home depot had them but only the DCK280C2 which is a regular drill/driver with impact. For the $20 more I wanted the DCK285C2 which had the hammerdrill/driver. I mean who wouldn't want the versatility of a hammer drill option on the same drill for $20 more? Anyways, I LOVE that DeWalt finally went to a slide style battery. Kudos for the battery not falling out by accident anymore. Having the option of the 1.5ah batteries that it comes with is nice as they charge quickly and are compact. I need to buy the 3.0ah battery's though because these tools are pretty much attached to my hands 8-10 hours a day. The battery will easily charge in time (~30 minutes)before the other one dies at a pretty continual use though so it's not critical for me yet.

The Drill is snappy and I love it. It spins with so much more power and RPM's than my existing drill. Being in the garage door industry I'd say I'm drilling 90% Steel/Metals and 10% Wood. This thing is amazing and cuts through whatever I'm drilling quickly and without hangup.

Both the drill and the impact driver pack a lot of punch and power in comparison to my 18V Dewalt drill. Multiple speeds, impact, you name it. After a couple of days of ownership, I'm not sure what else I can do to really test this unit:

- Repetitive drilling and screws replacing a portion of a wooden fence? Check
- Drilling through concrete? Check
- Drilling through masonry? Check

I only drilled through the concrete just to see if it could do it....now I'm inspired to tackle a couple of new projects because I now have tools with the right "oomph" to get it done.

The battery packs (the kit comes with two 20V batteries) hold a heck of a lot of power - I'm not sure how long they would really last as after four hours of steady use each day there was still a lot of power left in the drills; I put them back on the charger at the end of the day as I wanted a full load when I started again the next day.

The radio has okay reception and sound - you can also plug it into a wall instead of just relying on batteries. One convenience to the radio is you can also power your phone via the USB charger on the side of the radio.

Considering you get the two drills and the radio, a charger and two 20V battery packs which if you purchased them individually would cost you a little over $625, this is a pretty good deal at $339 for the combo. If you are a do-it-yourself'er or a contractor that travels around, I would recommend thi skit.

Not much more I could add about the positive aspects of this tool. Dewalt needs to correct the excessive chuck runout. This video compares the dcd785 to an old makita 9.6v. No plans on building precise grandfather clocks but the wobble is a bit much.

In December 2011, I decided to upgrade all of my aging cordless tools to the DEWALT 20-Volt line. I bought the DEWALT DCK491L2 20-Volt MAX Li-Ion 3.0 Ah 4-Tool Combo Kit from Amazon along with this Hammer Drill and Impact Combo kit. I have been very pleased with the design, robustness, and performance of all of the 20-volt tools with the notable exception of the DCD785 Hammer Drill included in this kit. I have received 2 kits so far (THANK YOU AMAZON!) trying to get one that doesn't wobble with no luck. Amazon is sending me out one more kit (THANK YOU AGAIN AMAZON) to see if the 3rd time is the charm. I hope it is...

Here is the problem. The DCD785 Hammer Drill suffers from significant off-center wobble. How bad is the wobble? While trying to drill though aluminum, a #40 bit would "walk" down aluminum sheet. The same #40 bit in my ancient Makita cordless or the DEWALT DCD985 premium hammer drill turned true and performed normally. Even a friend's Craftsman cordless exhibited no discernible wobble. Using the DCD785 Hammer Drill in other materials with larger bits ALWAYS transmits a wobble movement back through the drill. This is UNACCEPTABLE.

I believe that the problem with the chuck on the DCD785 is internal. When the chuck is rotating, the outside circumference of the chuck appears to be true (i.e. no visible runout). The off-center condition only affects whatever is clamped inside the chuck. Perhaps the chuck jaws are not clamping evenly. I have tried re-clamping wobbling off-center bits to no avail.

I hate to trash this otherwise nice kit, but DEWALT has a real loser here. This chuck is either a bad design or suffers from careless manufacturing.
