Strength Defies Size
DEWALT has optimized both of these tools to withstand daily jobsite wear and tear. The 1/2-inch hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 535 unit watts out for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill/driver’s patented three-speed (0-575; 0-1,350; and 0-2,000 RPM), all-metal transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drill/drivers on the market. Meanwhile, the impact driver’s robust motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Its one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 3.4-pound weight, the premium impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.

Endurance and Ease of Use
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into both tools’ switches to provide maximum life for the tools and batteries by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology, and the included Energy Star-qualified charger has dual voltage capabilities and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. The tools’ slim handles fit easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs, and the bright built-in LED work lights above the triggers have a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

I have owned several Dewalt cordless drills and this one is the best yet.
Eric M. Hannesson
Batteries last a long time with constant use and when the battery does finally die the charger charges the battery in less than 40 min, very durable.
Joe Reich
Well made power tools, very solid build, feel great in your hand, not too heavy or too light, enough power for whatever you need.

I'd owned a 14-volt DeWalt drill for more than ten years; I'd purchased it from a friend who had bought it new and then purchased the DeWalt 18-volt model when they first came out. So, when I bought it from him in 2000 it was already a few years old. Not surprisingly, after all those years, the NiCad batteries were beginning to fail and I initially considered just replacing them. However, when I looked at how much two new batteries would cost and then factored in the heavy use the drill had received (by then I had remodeled 2 houses with it), I decided to look at a replacement model. Although I had looked at other brands, particularly Milwaukee and Makita, because of how well my original DeWalt had held up I decided I would stick with a brand I knew I could trust. Although I shopped around, I couldn't really find any "deals" (that is, discounts) on this product, but I needed to buy it anyway because I had started another house remodel and I knew I was going to need a drill sooner rather than later. Fortunately, though, before I hit the "Buy" button, I discovered this package. For only $50 - $70 more than the price of the Hammer Drill alone (which is DeWalt's top-of-the-line unit, and a 1/2" model, not the 3/8" drill that I'd previously owned), I also got the Impact Driver. If you're on the fence about this combo, leap off and buy one because it's AWESOME! The impact driver is very useful for driving screws, and a bit easier to handle than the drill. Although it doesn't have an adjustable clutch like the drill, with a bit of practice you can drive screws into pretty much anything, and set them as deep as you want. (Be careful though, 'cause with all the torque this thing has, you can screw right through things!) The drill, of course, is also totally awesome.Read more ›

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
For starters, this combo set includes:

1) 20v Cordless Hammerdrill (Model DCD985)
1) 20v Cordless Impact Driver (Model DCF885)
1) Side Handle for the Hammerdrill
1) Charger (Model DCB101)
2) 20v Lithium-Ion Batteries
1) Storage & Carrying Bag
1) Belt Hook (comes attached to the impact driver and can easily be removed)

The hammerdrill is what I've used the most and, as expected, it's quite powerful and comes loaded with functions, including a control collar that selects between three modes including: hammerdrilling, screwdriving, and drilling. Of course, the standard torque adjustment collar is right next to the control collar. In addition, there are the standard three speed settings as well as a helpful worklight and an attachable side handle. I use a power drill for home repair projects and this drill is unquestionably the most powerful I've ever owned, perhaps a bit too powerful for the casual user. It's also a bit heavier than I'm accustomed to, coming in at about five pounds (with battery attached) while my 12v Ryobi was less than three pounds. Of course, this DeWalt more than makes up for the slight weight difference as it's a veritable powerhouse. I'll never pick up the Ryobi again!

As for the impact driver, there aren't any variable functions, but there is a great worklight included, with the light emanating from three different points on the front of the driver. The included manual indicates that the impact driver chuck only accepts 1/4" (6.35 mm) hex accessories and 1" (25.4 mm) bit tips. Though the belt hook comes pre-attached to the impact driver, it can be easily removed or alternately attached to the hammerdrill.

I purchased a Kobalt 18V Lithium-ion set at Lowe's, and within about a month, the drill chuck was already having issues. I replaced it with this Dewalt set. The Dewalt set ran about 3x the price of the Kobalt stuff, but the difference in quality shows. The drill works faster in concrete than my 36V Bosch drill. Batteries last a long time - I drove about 40 1/4" x 2 3/4" tapcons in using the impact driver on a single charge with the smaller battery (1.5AH), so that should double with a 3.0AH.

As other reviewers have said, the kit doesn't include bit holders. However, if you purchase a Milwaukee bit holder, you can install that (holds 3 bits) or purchase an official holder from Dewalt. Milwaukee Bit Holder for 2602-20, 2602-22

The only real con I've seen with this set is that the batteries have no charge indicator. The driver / drill just almost immediately die when the battery charge runs out.

This DeWalt 20v drill / impact driver kit is very high quality, is well made, and the 3.0 ah, 60w batteries last a long time. I often use my drill all day doing commercial HVAC work so the higher capacity batteries were a must, but the extra expense (over the 1.5 ah) may be wasted if you only use the tool occasionally. I also own a red M18 XC combo kit (47w) and an orange 18v NiCd combo kit and the DeWalt is the only one with a three speed selector, and the batteries are easier to remove. The Li ion batteries are very expensive for this tool if purchased separately, so hopefully I can get at least two years out of them. I do not have long-term usage info yet but it seems like it's a heavy duty drill.
The tools are of equal or better quality than the others I have owned and used and it looks like the soft rubber parts of the drill housing are heavier and will hold up better than some of the other brands have. I also bought the LED flashlight for the 20v system and it's nice and compact to fit in the bag. I really like the one hand chuck on the impact driver which makes it easy to change tools on the fly.
Unfortunately you get a canvas bag instead of a hard case, but it's decent quality. I put my sockets and hex chucks and bit tips in a small zipper bag that fits nicely in the tool bag with the drill and driver and charger. I recommend removing the batteries from the tools when in storage and transit.
