After reading a review made by a user of the CST Berger transit, I decided to try this new DeWalt one. I am very well pleased. Only having been able to find the level version, I decided to order it from Amazon.
From my experience, this is a very useful tool, especially for basic surveying and leveling. I have tried laser tools of this sort and have been disappointed. Recently, I used this transit to do a site survey for installing a satellite TV system in a heavily wooded area. Since the transit does not include a magnetic compass, I placed a Silva plate compass on the top of the telescope, while level. Fortunately, there were no iron or steel close enough to affect the compass and to keep it from seeking magnetic north. Having done this, I easily set the base plate to true north. Using the vertical transit and azmuth feature, I knew exactly where to place the satellite mounting pole for the best clearances between the trees. Quality of construction, smoothness of movement and fit is quite good for an inexpensive transit.

We've purchased three of the DEWALT DW092PK Transits,

This review is from: DEWALT DW092PK 20X Transit Level Package with Tripod, Rod, and Carrying Case (Tools & Home Improvement)
After years of borrowing a transit when we needed one, we decided to purchase this transit at an easy on the wallet price. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the $1k+ models, but we didn't need all the bells and whistles. We wanted a basic transit for occasional use with a minimum of things that could go wrong with it over the next 30 years. I believe this transit will easily last 30 years and still be useable for our needs.
(We figured the laser levels had more "things" that could go wrong and more parts that could potentially need replacing. Even one person operation on the laser levels didn't trump the "less things to go wrong" thinking.) This transit has done everything we have needed it to do. We've used it to level a foundation. We've used it to level an above ground swimming pool to plus or minus 1/8" accuracy over 24'. We've used it to line up fencing on our acreage and to shoot elevations. Set-up may not be as slick as with the more expensive models, but for occasional use and the lower price point, we didn't think this a problem. My husband has enough surveying background that he didn't bother with the instruction book, so I can't comment on its content. After purchasing one for ourselves, we were so pleased, we purchased two more to gift. If you are looking for a reasonably priced transit for occasional use and you have two people available when it needs to be used, this is a good choice. If you need a transit for professional use, you may want to pay for a few more bells and whistles. However, I do know two contractors who use this transit on their job sites--it does the job and the lower price point reduces the worry about damage to expensive equipment.

Very good Quality-Simple to use,
By
This review is from: DEWALT DW092PK 20X Transit Level Package with Tripod, Rod, and Carrying Case (Tools & Home Improvement)
This simple instrument is of very good quality and simple to use if you know a little about rudimentary surveying and it's principles. I have found that reviews dealing with many different types of instruments for sale to the public, are given less than stellar reviews because they are simply expecting the equipment to do something that requires a small bit of background know how for it's use, that the buyer does not have. Often the equipment is blamed for problems that the user does not know how to address.
So, great piece of simple surveying equipment for a small price when compared to state of the art GPS surveying instruments and will do a proper job when used with proper surveying knowledge and background. If you don't have the background and are not willing to learn, just pay a pro to do it and be done.
