After reading a review made by a user of the CST Berger transit, I decided to try this new DeWalt one. I am very well pleased. Only having been able to find the level version, I decided to order it from Amazon.

From my experience, this is a very useful tool, especially for basic surveying and leveling. I have tried laser tools of this sort and have been disappointed.

Recently, I used this transit to do a site survey for installing a satellite TV system in a heavily wooded area. Since the transit does not include a magnetic compass, I placed a Silva plate compass on the top of the telescope, while level. Fortunately, there were no iron or steel close enough to affect the compass and to keep it from seeking magnetic north. Having done this, I easily set the base plate to true north. Using the vertical transit and azmuth feature, I knew exactly where to place the satellite mounting pole for the best clearances between the trees.

Quality of construction, smoothness of movement and fit is quite good for an inexpensive transit.

This simple instrument is of very good quality and simple to use if you know a little about rudimentary surveying and it's principles. I have found that reviews dealing with many different types of instruments for sale to the public, are given less than stellar reviews because they are simply expecting the equipment to do something that requires a small bit of background know how for it's use, that the buyer does not have. Often the equipment is blamed for problems that the user does not know how to address.
So, great piece of simple surveying equipment for a small price when compared to state of the art GPS surveying instruments and will do a proper job when used with proper surveying knowledge and background. If you don't have the background and are not willing to learn, just pay a pro to do it and be done.

My Dewalt transit level also would not level. I sent it back to Dewalt, they sent it to their service facility, it came back about a month later. Still would not level! Nice telescope for birdwatching though.

Dewalt's customer service is polite but they don't support their product well.

I ended up going with a David White (now owned by CST Berger), which leveled and checked right away, and unlike the Dewalt has adjustment screws on the bubble level with instructions on how to use them.

After years of borrowing a transit when we needed one, we decided to purchase this transit at an easy on the wallet price. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the $1k+ models, but we didn't need all the bells and whistles. We wanted a basic transit for occasional use with a minimum of things that could go wrong with it over the next 30 years. I believe this transit will easily last 30 years and still be useable for our needs.

(We figured the laser levels had more "things" that could go wrong and more parts that could potentially need replacing. Even one person operation on the laser levels didn't trump the "less things to go wrong" thinking.)

This transit has done everything we have needed it to do. We've used it to level a foundation. We've used it to level an above ground swimming pool to plus or minus 1/8" accuracy over 24'. We've used it to line up fencing on our acreage and to shoot elevations.

Set-up may not be as slick as with the more expensive models, but for occasional use and the lower price point, we didn't think this a problem.

My husband has enough surveying background that he didn't bother with the instruction book, so I can't comment on its content.

After purchasing one for ourselves, we were so pleased, we purchased two more to gift.

If you are looking for a reasonably priced transit for occasional use and you have two people available when it needs to be used, this is a good choice. If you need a transit for professional use, you may want to pay for a few more bells and whistles. However, I do know two contractors who use this transit on their job sites--it does the job and the lower price point reduces the worry about damage to expensive equipment.

I purchased the DW092PK Transit-Level package for the purpose of a profile survey at my local church. When I opened the box and viewed the instrument, I was very impressed with the look and the overall quality and detail given to the instrument design. However, it broke my heart when I could not get it to level. After trying numerous times, I decided to do a little research on the instrument, and later found out that the transit-level version, (DW092), Had To Be Calibrated on a regular bases. I was sad to return it due to this design flaw. If dewalt somehow decides to fix such a flaw, it will become a great competitor in the surveying market.

I bought this tool for occasional use in professional setting, I am a PE but I do not perform much surveying.

Having read earlier negative comments, I still purchased the tool based on a generally positive opinion about Dewalt quality. This tool suffers from both bad materials and bad quality control, but it is usable if you have technical savvy and some surveying experience.

- The overall quality is poor, it is die-cast metal with indistinct inclinometer markings and a clunky feel in use.

- User's manual (sheet) is unimpressive and has spelling and grammar errors.

- One of the thumb knob adjusters loosened from its connection on the bottom plate on the second day of use, meaning it would not tilt instrument vertically, but rather unscrew from the bottom as it was screwing into the top. This required me to remove the bottom plate cover and tighten the threaded nut from the bottom (such a connection should have loc-tite or some other feature to prevent loosening). Luckily I had a flat head screwdriver the same size as the allen key (not supplied).

- The tripod is shoddy, lightweight, probably will not last long but at least it's portable.

- Initial leveling was a nightmare, as other reviewers have reported. This instrument is not calibrated in the factory. To achieve leveling, you must adjust the bubble level below the site tube. This requires a multi-step iteration which took me about 30 minutes to figure out and perform:
1. Get the instrument as level as you can using the three leveling thumb knobs. It will not stay level while you rotate the instrument, because the bubble tube is not level.
2. Loosen the set screw for the bubble level while the bubble is in the centered position (i.e.
