5.0 out of 5 stars Tough and strong, November 26, 1999

This review is from: DEWALT DW106K 3/8-Inch Heavy Duty Variable Speed Reversing 5.4 Amp Drill with Keyless Chuck and Carrying Case (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought one of these drills over a year ago to put up a wood fence. It is strong enough to shoot screws on a stockade fence. Very tough housing and the two way level is great.

I needed more power than my cordless drill could give, so I upgraded to this awesome Dewalt. For the price of this Dewalt, you get way more features in comparison to the cheaper $40 drills. The keyless chuck makes for easy changing of the drill bits. 2500 rpm is probably all you will need for most jobs around the house. The drill has a 2 levels built into the back upper handle, one viewable form the top and one from the rear. The Dewalt also has one of the easiest and most comfortable toggle switches. I highly recommend shelling out the extra bucks for this one, as it will certainly last a lifetime. Not to mention how stylin you will be walking around with a bright yellow drill.

5.0 out of 5 stars The drill that will not die!, December 18, 1999

I have had my DeWalt drill for about 4 months and I just love it. The thing gets used hard and it never even gets hot. Cordless drills are a bit more convenient, but after you feel the power of this drill, the minor inconvenience of finding an extension cord is soon forgotten.

4.0 out of 5 stars A FINE TOOL, October 20, 2000

I dont know what to say about this tool that hasent been said already. It is of very good quality and powerful as well. If you look around at other drills I doubt you will find anything that even comes close to this tool. The chuck is top notch,In my opinion one of the finest made. The level mounted in the drill body is a great idea,it really works well.On the down side I wish the body had a rubber grip like the cordless model and putting it away in the kit box puts a weird tweek in the cord and can be tough to do in a hurry. other than that this item should be in you tool box or shop as of yesterday. A real winner. now get out there and drill something..

5.0 out of 5 stars Put the cordless away! (unless you're on a deserted island), January 12, 2000

I have had one of these for a couple of years now. I also have gone through more than a few cordless "drills". VERY powerful product that I have yet to overchallenge with some pretty challenging home projects (try drilling 3/8" holes through pressure-treated 4x4's with a cordless). Ya, cordless drills are nice if you are putting up mini blinds or something, but if you look at power vs price this can't be beat!

5.0 out of 5 stars On the Level, October 8, 2000

Just bought one of these tonight and couldn't be more pleased. I've been repairing termite-damaged bathroom joists and subfloor in anticipation of screwing in backerboard for a tile floor. Been using my trusty Makita cordless, which I thought was pretty good (although it's from circa '88 and the batteries aren't holding a charge like they used to). And it's been a tough job because I've had to basically stand on my head to screw hangers on these new joists, working at arm's length half the time. Knew I needed more power and read the comments here. Right on, folks! I just wish I had bought it earlier. In shots where I struggled with the cordless, this bad boy just growls and drives in a screw at whatever speed I like. Now I'm looking forward to finishing the job. I usually buy through Amazon because of their prices and service, but didn't have time tonight (I'm without a toilet until I get this done, okay). The store had a comparable Milwaukee drill for about 20 bucks more and I know it's tough to beat Milwaukee. What sold me on the DeWalt were the two spirit levels -- one for flat horizontal and one for straight down -- built right into the handle. That's a feature I really could have used in the past (like putting in a mantle when I needed dead level holes for the support bolts). The levels were the clincher, along with the fact that it comes with a case, although you do have to bend the cord just a tad to fit it in. Both drills had keyless chucks, although the Milwaukee chuck was all-metal, a tempting feature since a tight spot kind of shredded my plastic Makita chuck earlier today. Chuck slippage? I haven't seen it it. And I put plenty of torque to a couple of screws going through knots (what did happen to cheap, straight-grained lumber?). I was kind of surprised that there was no ground on the plug - maybe insulation technology has progressed? The handle feels sweet, with a big groove for thumb and forefinger lined up to put pressure on the bit; you use your little fingers for the trigger. Great speed control with plenty of torque at a crawl. Light weight for the power. Just a lot of drill for this do-it-yourselfer's money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for wood, but......, June 30, 2000

The DeWalt DW106 is a good drill for some applications. It is a lightweight, high rpm, dependable tool. It does have it's limitations, though. If you plan to do much drilling in steel or other hard substances, this may not be the right tool. It will heat up fairly quickly and just doesn't have the torque needed for the heavy duty jobs. If you do a lot of hole-drilling or screw-driving in softwoods, the light weight of this tool makes it ideal. If you want to buy only one drill for a wider range of applications, without going to a 1/2" drill, the DW222 might be a better choice. It has 6.7 amps instead of 5.4 amps, which makes a significant difference. It still has 1500 rpm, which isn't all that slow, and the torque is unbelievable. The price is also significantly higher, but you get what you pay for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, November 30, 2001
This review is from: DEWALT DW106K 3/8-Inch Heavy Duty Variable Speed Reversing 5.4 Amp Drill with Keyless Chuck and Carrying Case (Tools & Home Improvement)
After checking out several corded drills, picking the DW106 was a no brainer. Plenty of power, good weight distribution, and built in level are only a few of its pluses. There are a lot of other good drills out there but none offers what this drill does at its price point. Simply a great value.

If you are buying your first drill this is the one, if you don't have this drill yet you need it. I have a several drills, cordless and a heavy duty right angle, but this one gets a lot of use. Its high RPM and light weight make it great for accessories like wire brushes and other paint removal products. The keyless chuck is great for changing bits. I use it for projects where I will be using it for long periods of time, like driving lots of deck screws, or removing paint/rust with a wire brush...places a cordless just doesn't hold up. It's a lot better value than a lot of cordless drills, which have their own place. With this drill you get the great Dewalt design and reliability. I have had no problems with mine.

This review is from: DEWALT DW106K 3/8-Inch Heavy Duty Variable Speed Reversing 5.4 Amp Drill with Keyless Chuck and Carrying Case (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this drill recently, and have used it to build a few projects. It easily handled drilling 3/8" holes through a three inch sandwich of tempered masonite and particleboard. The only thing that slowed me down was the drill bit getting hot. I did a side by side comparison with the Bosch 1005 and the Milwaukee 0233-20, and found this drill to be the best value. The Milwaukee was a little smoother and nicer all around, but it was too heavy and not very comfortable for me. Also, I didn't need the extra durability of the Milwaukee since I use the drill primarily for my woodworking hobby and for occasional home repairs. The Bosch seemed ok, but sounded kind of rough compared to the DeWalt (it was not up to the typical Bosch standards). The final clincher was that the DeWalt was made in the USA, whereas the Bosch was not. I'd give it four stars, since there are better drills out there, but because of the low price and great features, I have to give it that extra star.
