Fast and Versatile with Variable-Speed Control
The jigsaw's variable-speed control allows you to make quick, accurate adjustments and utilize speeds ranging from 0 strokes per minute to 3,100 strokes per minute. This application-specific performance translates to improved control and cleaner results. In addition, the saw delivers a 1-inch stroke length, and its dependable 5.5 amp motor provides the power you need for tough applications.

Adding to the saw's application-specific performance is a four-position orbital action for quicker, more aggressive cuts. When you need to make accurate bevel cuts, a shoe that bevels makes it easy to setup for cutting angles that range from 0 degrees to 45 degrees.

Designed for Control and Durability
This easy-to-maneuver jigsaw weighs just 6.2 pounds, but that doesn't mean it compromises on dependability or comfort. An all-metal gear case provides the durability necessary in a professional shop environment, while a comfortable grip allows you to work longer and produce work with precision.

Save Time with Tool-Free Blade Changes
Whether you're working with a variety of specialty materials that require different blades or you're simply ready for a more aggressive cut, the DEWALT tool-free blade clamp allows you to complete blade changes quickly.

This compact jigsaw kit also comes with a DEWALT warranty package that includes a three-year limited warranty, a one-year free service contract, and a 90-day money back guarantee.

Overall this is a good saw with good power.

The sole doesn't retain the 90 degree setting which mean that you constantly have to check for squareness.

On straight cuts, the blade will wander about even while supported by the roller guides.

I just got mine today so I have not alot of time invested in using it .

My nice bosch was destroyed being run over in the parking lot which was a great loss to me .

Not having the funds to spring for another new bosch at the present and since I can't live without a jigsaw this one looked like it may fit the bill .

I read many reviews here tryong to decide which would be the best buy for the money I had . The reviews did not look too good for the dewalt 321 or the 318 but no one had bashed this model yet .

I must admit when I got it I had doubts mainly because of the other dewalt model reviews and this saw did not have quite the same design as the bosch as far as the blade change and the shoe did not have positive locks as the bosch offers , but the 317 does offer a adjustable scale so once you set the base a perfect 90 degrees and adjust the scale to line up with that mark it cuts a 90 degree cut pretty well , at least i had no problem .

It does not have a blower to push saw dust off the line but I noticed the motor cooling fan did a pretty good job on it's own .

I was not certain about the blade guide since the other dewalt models seemed to present a blade drift problem on the 321 and 318 . I thought looking at the design and testing it it would be easy for the blade to leave the roller guide but in actual use the pressure from the blade against the roller held it in place even on curves . I cut straight and curves in 3/4" hard crate wood which was knotty and had warp and was harder than pine and the saw did the job even with the cheap blade provided . I realized i did not have the saw on orbit at all and once swithced it cut even faster and better along with a smoother finish cut .

I purchased the DW317 This saw is not good enough to justify $105 with tax or the bonus sander to boot. The motor runs good its a bit noisy. The black plastic for the orbiting settings seems cheap. It is very unfortunate that the saw's shoe base vibrates out of adjustment because it has no notches or indentations for pre set angles. The saw base also has a huge slotted bolt head making it very difficult to tighten and loosen. Customers will need to file or grind a very wide screwdriver thicker for it. The included T shank style blade can be pulled out with finger tip strength alone. This saw will however securely hold the U shank blades rock solid and only let go when the blade release is pulled. Finally the saw does not cut straight with a good blade in it. The blade holder has side to sided movement almost 1/8" on a new saw.

I had a Sears jig saw that lasted 15 years and and was a workhorse on plenty of projects. When it finally died I thought I would buy a quality name tool and so I bought the Dewalt DW317. What a mistake. Now.... I know I'm not the best craftsman, but I surely know how to make a straight cut. At least I used to be able to make straight cuts. This thing wanders all over the place. I tried different type blades, adjusted the speed and adjusted the angle. This saw just goes where it wants. Can't wait until I "accidentally" run it over with my truck.

Not sure why so many are having trouble cutting a straight line. I quickly drew a straight line on some uneven boards (varied thickness) to make it even harder and had no trouble. I'm not saying folks aren't having a problem, but just wanted to show in my case, the saw works fine. I am a bit of a tool junky and have a Bosch 1587avs and 1582vs, both of which I find more substantial than the DeWalt, but you pay for that. For the price, the typical home owner needing a capable jigsaw should do just fine with this saw, assuming they learn how to use it correctly.

Purchased this tool at Home Depot about seven years ago, and used it very very sparingly, primarily to cut off the ends of laminate flooring boards during a small job. Prior to buying this, I was using a light small decade-old $35 Black & Decker jigsaw which cannot cut a square/straight line, but surprisingly I was able to be productive with it within its capabilities.

I figured it was time to move up to a higher quality model, as the old B&D was clearly limited. I went with the DeWalt brand since I have had good experiences with their other products, and chose the DW317. This tool seemed well-built, with a metal gear casing, easy blade change mechanism, selectable orbital options, and a blade roller guide, all features which the basic B&D lacked. The price, at ~$100, was reasonable. The DW317 is a heavy unit, not necessarily a bad thing. The motor is very powerful, if somewhat vibration-prone. Cutting line sight is average. It came with a nice sturdy storage box. Unfortunately, that's about it for its good points.

The major reason I upgraded to this DeWalt was because I expected it to produce more accurate and square cuts. While all jigsaws are inherently susceptible to some amount of blade flex or runout, this saw was a disappointment. On straight cuts, the blade will wander about even while supported by the roller guides. It's even more difficult to keep a square cut or follow a line on curves, (zero orbital setting). The variable speed feature seems uneven (top-end loaded). The foot plate, as other reviewers noted, is not notched at commonly set angles, making it difficult to square up and lock.
