DeWalt's 5-inch random-orbit sander is a great tool for professional woodworkers and painters, as well as homeowners looking for a reliable sander for do-it-yourself projects. It has a 2 amp motor that provides 12,000 orbits per minute, with a 3/32 orbit diameter. Its controlled finishing system maintains consistent control over the pad speed, minimizing gouging at startup. We found that the sander removes material quickly and leaves a good finish. While it has less vibration than many sanders we've tried--thanks in part to DeWalt's dual-plane counterbalanced fan--we found that gripping the tool from the side rather than from the top seemed easier on the hands, and thought the top grip could get tiresome in extended-use situations. We liked the dust canister configuration on this tool, which uses a simple and effective twist-lock mechanism to prevent air pressure from popping the canister off the tool. The sealed switch prevents problems from dust contamination. The kit comes with the sander, a dust collector, a vacuum attachment, and a case. --Brian Trinen

This sander is smooth and durable. The dust collection system works better than most palm sanders I've use. The hook and pile on the pad seems to hold up longer than other sanders. Has a dust protected switch so you don't go through swiches often. This sander can go all day--great, well designed sander.

For the money the DW 421 can not be beat. I got tired of emptying the dust bag and with it hooked up to mp shop-vac I can sand any place. This works much better than the dust bag. I have had no problems with the power, performance, or sanding disk. The hook and loop is great but all hooks need to be clean out with a vac occasionally. In 3 years it has sanded a lot of dry wall and wood using all grits.

I have used mine for sanding table tops and similar applications. the bag did fall off. I used some lock-tite thread adhesive, the bag does not fall off now. The bag also has a twist locking mechanism which works fine, so I never need to seperate the lock-tite bond unless I need to open the sander up for repair. That is perhaps the difference between 4.5 stars and 5 stars. Still I think it is better than a 4 star sander.
