5.0 out of 5 stars Drills though thick concrete!
I needed to drill a 1" hole through 14" of hard concrete. Needless to say, my little Black & Decker drill was not up to the job. I first tried a Milwaukee 1/2" Hammerdrill, but the chuck actually broke off from the shank halfway through the hole. I traded it in for this DeWalt and finished the job. Great drill, nice color.

1.0 out of 5 stars what a piece of junk
I owned this yellow piece of garbage for less than a week. The cheap plastic case cracked while hammering into concrete. I thought I'd go with DeWalt this time since it was cheaper than the Milwaukee. Sure am glad I was able to get my money back and buy a real tool. No more toys for my crew. Milwaukee all the way, I should have known better, I have yet to have any...

I thought I'd go with DeWalt this time since it was cheaper than the Milwaukee. Sure am glad I was able to get my money back and buy a real tool. No more toys for my crew. Milwaukee all the way, I should have known better, I have yet to have any Milwaukee tool fail on me. Don't know why it cracked, maybe it was too cold outside or something, but regardless, that should not have happened.

Do not buy this unless you want a plastic, yes plastic gear box for the hammer mechanism and gear transmission, with cheap sleeve bushings not ball or roller bearings. I have the older made in USA model this replaced , that has a cast metal gearbox, real bearings and cost less than this. What a sham. I have many DW tools and wrote this to warn others.

I used this drill for about a year. Because of the dual speed and hammer/drill combo it is very versatile. However, it burned up on me tonight while running some screws into concrete. I expect my tools to last a lot longer than 1 year. I would recommend that you look at the Milwaukee or Bosch if you plan on doing anything other than light work.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry for useing yellow again, August 2, 2011
This review is from: DEWALT DW505 1/2-Inch 7.8-Amp Variable-Speed Reversing Dual Range Hammerdrill (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this drill from Home depot, I used to be in construction, Now Farming. The first burned up on me. The second one the chuck wouldn't tighten and hold the bit While impacting. The third one the plastic gears inside stripped as they did on all my Dewalt drills. There is a recall on alot of dewalts, for switches burning up, getting hot or just dont work. I was a faithfull yellow customer, but if you dont want to get stuck with this drill after three months buy Rigid. I am now going to garage sale all my dewalts and replace them. I also took them apart and replaced the updated switches and plastic gears, this by the way is regular maintenance if you use you tools is a proffession. Maybe dewalt should advertise these as light duty use tools, for the weekend warrior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drill for the price., January 9, 2001

The power delivery on this hammer drill was fantastic. I had a complicated drill operation thru' metal followed by concrete. So I had to switch bits thru' the operation. But it was not a problem and performed better than I anticipated. For $160, you are getting a hammer drill, with 2 speeds and reversing power.

Better get good bits for this baby 'cos it drills good. The bits will most likely be the weak link. The 7.2 amp rating is beat only by the 8.5 amp.

I have a habit of sticking with yellow first of all, But I can't say it does not do the job, I drill holes in cement on a regular basis and it does the job, Though I must say if your going to do alot of drilling into cement with large drill bits over 1/2 inch , you should think about a more heavier duty drill.
This one is small and not something you can really lean on with weight and the plasic case on the drill does not remind me of something that is forgiving. I will be able to get a better judge of this product after it's been droped a few times and still stands up to the task, not that this is what happens all the time, but it will tell you what is heavy duty and what's not !

1.0 out of 5 stars junk, December 29, 2011
This review is from: DEWALT DW505 1/2-Inch 7.8-Amp Variable-Speed Reversing Dual Range Hammerdrill (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is junk. I was really disappointed. I've owned numerous Dewalt tools. The hammer mechanism wore out in a month of light use.

I bough this Hammer/Drill combo in replacement of another 1/2" and with the Dewalt DW505 I strongly believe I made a good choice.
