5.0 out of 5 stars The Drywaller's Dream
I hang drywall for a living and have accustomed myself to using the Rotozip for cutting out outlets, vents, etc. and got used to its lack of power and durability; until last week. I purchased the new DeWalt Cut-out tool and can't believe the difference in power and comfort. DeWalt really did their homework on this one. It also has a tool-free bit change which is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, but cheaply made
Had this for a couple of years now. I really like this tool for it's power and versatility. So far I've used it to cut drywall, cut out squares and rectangles in thin wood, cut metal with the proper bits or abrasive wheel bits, etc.My gripes, are the no tool lock system of theirs. The cheap plastic piece that says # 2 on it broke off and is not fixable, so basically, I...

It also has a tool-free bit change which is awesome. It makes changing bits quicker and easier and I never have to have a wrench around. Drop whatever you're using and get the DeWalt.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real tool, May 7, 2001

The rotozip revolution is a lot of hype and not well constructed. I returned it for the DW660. This is a powerful and smooth tool in comparison. I think this is one of the better DeWalt products that I own. Hold on because it can take off due to the power(not a complaint). I wish the base was a little better constructed for use in cutting wood and plastic. There is no circle guide either, otherwise I would give it 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully accurate, April 19, 2001

This review is from: DEWALT DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp 30,000 RPM Rotary Tool with 1/8-Inch and 1/4-Inch Collets (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this with full intent of putting it in, through, and around almost every material imaginable. It powered through my drywall installations with ease, and accuracy ( my keyhole saw hasn't been very dusty lately). But hold on to it, because it can get away from you. Yet, needless to say I would rather have this "issue" than having it be underpowered.

This tool has great balance, bit changes sans tool(s) is very convenient and one less thing for me to lose on the job. The depth gauge adjustment is easy to get to and simple. The bump off switch is a nice, it didn't seem like an overly important detail at the time of purchase, but the time you fire it up, do your business, and shut it down, its a very handy.

The reason for only 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have yet to put any cement backers, or tile under it. I really feel that if I run into any problems it will be with the bits and not the machine.

Its made my life, and my work more efficient and better.

4.0 out of 5 stars SUCCESS-ALMOST, January 10, 2001

This review is from: DEWALT DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp 30,000 RPM Rotary Tool with 1/8-Inch and 1/4-Inch Collets (Tools & Home Improvement)
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A ROTO-ZIP AS AN AID FOR INSTALLING WALL TILE. AFTER A 1/4 INCH CUT INTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS WALL TILE THE CARBIDE BIT BROKE. I WAS NOT VERY IMPRESSED. ALSO THE OVERALL FEEL, QUALITY AND POWER DISAPPOINTED. I RETURNED THE TOOL. I THEN ORDERED THE DEWALT CUT-OUT TOOL. I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY, FEEL AND POWER OF THIS TOOL. AGAIN I TRIED THE TILE CUT, BUT WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS. I WAS ABLE TO CUT THE TILE BUT SO SLOWLY IT WASN'T WORTH THE BOTHER. THEN I TRIED ANOTHER PIECE OF TILE THAT WAS MARKED WALL TILE. I WAS AMAZED AT THE DIFFERENCE. I WAS ABLE TO CUT HOLES FOR PIPES IN NOTHING FLAT. CONTROL WAS EXCELLENT AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE CHIPPING AROUND THE CUT WHICH COULD BE MINIMIZED EVEN MORE BY SLOWING DOWN THE RATE OF FEED. I ALSO TRIED THE TOOL IN WOOD, DRYWALL AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, STEEL. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE SOME VERY NICE CUTS IN 1/8" WALL SQUARE STEEL TUBING. ACTUALLY I AM MORE PLEASED WITH THIS DEWALT TOOL THAN MOST OF THE OTHER DEWALT TOOLS I OWN. MY ONLY RECOMMENDATION TO OTHER PURCHASERS IS THAT IF YOU INTEND TO USE THIS TOOL FOR CERAMIC TILE, MAKE SURE THE TILE IS REALLY WALL TILE.

Things I like about this unit

*Lots of power
*easy bump off switch. Really good safety feature. This unit is easy to turn off, and the turn on button is recessed so that it wont go on accidentally. I wonder why all routers aren't this way. You won't have to worry about this one suddenly turning on if you drop it.
*Unit does not blow the dust straight into your eyes like some routers do.
*Keyless chuck. Makes changing bits easy and fast. I think other router companies are going to follow suit.

The selling point that caused me to buy this unit was the enclosed dust protected engine. The unit is still fairly new so I won't be able to say how good that works for awhile.

This is easily the best router I have ever used. DeWalt has raised the bar, and I think that all other manufacturers will be following suit shortly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weekend warrior and rennovator, April 1, 2003

This review is from: DEWALT DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp 30,000 RPM Rotary Tool with 1/8-Inch and 1/4-Inch Collets (Tools & Home Improvement)
Fantastic cutout saw! Easier to hold than the Porter Cable and I like the on/off buttons better than the PC. While cutting out large segments of drywall (like doors and windows), the PC you have to leave running if your hands are full (of cut off drywall etc.) or manipulate your grip down towards the bit while it's running to shut off the tool. The DeWalt is much easier to just "bump" the top (furthest from the spinning bit) against your chin to shut off the tool. Maybe not the recommended method but it works great when your hands are full.

No problems with the tool whatsoever. Just wish the bits cut faster (same with all the cutout tools). Not having to use/find or lose an allen wrench is a definite advantage although the two buttons used to loosen/tighten the collet take a little getting used to. Having a case to hold the tool and spare bits is also nice.

Excellent tool that I'm still using and enjoying very much. Would buy it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first 5 amp cut-out tool made, June 5, 2004

This review is from: DEWALT DW660 Cut-Out 5 Amp 30,000 RPM Rotary Tool with 1/8-Inch and 1/4-Inch Collets (Tools & Home Improvement)
The superiority of this outstanding DeWalt cut-out tolls forced the present manufacturers to redisign thier models. All rotory tools made after, have based thier disign after the DW660 .It is the OLNY toolless bit changable model avbailabvle .The Porter cable is made with too big of a head and the on/off switch is not convientient.THIS IS truly THE BEST !!! A real drywallers dream .I should know because I was hanging when you had to make all cuts with keyhole saws &/OR the only available router was a Black N Decker that clearly stated in the warrannty that it was not designed for drywall and would void the warranty ..Shure am thankful for Dewalts intelligence...

Finally Dewalt makes a much needed drywall cut-out tool.I recomend purchasing the Porter Cable 3/16" bit to use with it.The Roto-Zip comparison is not being backed by the manufacturer. This tool will get into tight spaces that the Porter Cable cut-out tool can not.It also has more power and is easier to view where you are cutting.I would highly recomend it to any profesional drywall crew.

Had this for a couple of years now. I really like this tool for it's power and versatility. The cheap plastic piece that says # 2 on it broke off and is not fixable, so basically, I just use a wrench to tighten it down now. Also, this tool gets hot. Especially when I'm using bits with the abrasive cutters on the ends. Maybe that's not it's proper function, but regardless, it get's pretty hot.
Besides that, I really like it's power and versatility.
