Product Description

Amazon.com

In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen

This is yet another addition to DeWalt's great line of tools. It's awsome for cutting drywall, plaster, plywood, etc. One of the most important features to me is the bump off switch. It makes it easy to shut the machine off when your hands are full. Other things that I like include the adjustable metal guide, the carrying case, and the good assortment of bits. One thing that I would like to see DeWalt include on this tool is a small worklight. I think it would only increase their ability to compete with some of the other manufactures of these rotary tools.

this is the second of two reviews on this same tool that i have written. in the first i bombed it as basically useless in cutting curves in hardiboard tile backer. but i then discovered the way to do it is to make several cuts each a little deeper into the board( using the guide and depth ring) until you have completely pierced the board. very smooth strong. good tool well made.
the first review i have deleted, I hope.

I bought mine at the local home improvement mega-store, but it's the same product. So far, I've used mine for cutting a small, unique section of pvc board to replace some rotted trim in my bay window and to cut out tile from my shower wall. The tool was plenty powerful, but not so much that you felt you might lose control of it while trying to make a detailed cut; in fact, some of the grout lines in my shower were 1/16" and I was easily able to avoid cutting into adjoining tiles that I wanted to keep.

Perhaps I have been hanging sheetrock for too long... This tool works - and seems perfect for the lazy and the unlucky - but I do better measuring in advance and just working by hand. In the long run, it's less noise, mess, and worry about the tool making a mess. As other have said, this needs a power adjustment on it - it's way too strong for sheetrock work - which is not good when it runs away from you or bounces off a screw around a can... It also needs a shield to keep the dust from flying at you, and a vacuum to collect the dust this thing makes - we have dust coming out of the can hole for days after; weeks on one case where we did the downstairs first and then went on to work upstairs - piles of dust then fell out of the downstairs cans! Lady homeowner was not happy. I would not buy this again. One like it - that was adjustable, helped with the cleanup, and wasn't so big in the hand - I would buy. A batter powered unit that ran about as third fast and sucked cuttings as it worked and exhausted dust away from the operator would be plenty good.

I bought this tool years ago. Every time I try use it I want to write a crappy review. This is easily the most cumbersome, hard to use tool in my tool box. Changing bits is a complete hassle and virtually impossible for a woman with small hands. It makes more sense to get a more powerful drill and another tool than to try to manage this. It needs a redesign with the true depth of their market in mind. AWFUL!!!!!!

Great for cutting holes in drywall that has been tacked in place. After cutting the drywall pushes back against the studs very nicely. Just need to take care to not let it get away from you and find out too late you're cutting away from the outlet box or whatever. Mud can do wonders though...

Bought this for a project and have since used it many times. Very versatile tool. Depth stop is a bit flimsy and the locking mechanism for bit changes can be a hassle, otherwise well made.
