very useful but bundle it,

definitely a *major* improvement over not having one. I remember having a bit of a problem getting the screw holes in the hood to line up with those in the planer, but no hig hammers or powertools were required to overcome this minor hassle. The silliness is that you can't flip up the outfeed with the hood mounted, and unmounting the hood each time isn't rational. My planer is mounted under a workbench, and I just left plenty of clear and in the back. I'd say this ought to be bundled with the planer - which is a great planer by the way - this tool produces *volumes* of chips! some form of dust or chip collection is a requirement, packaging it separately is just a form of gouging. I've never noticed any chip compression pitting as described by another reviewer - either with or without the hood. btw. I'm using a 5.5hp Sears shop vacuum with it.

Cut clean-up time in half....,

This dust hood works fairly well but I still get chips around the planer knives...leaving dents in the surface of the boards even when using a 2hp dust collector connected using less than 10 feet of hose. The hood also prevents you from folding up the out feed table which is a bit of an hassle for storing the tool when not in use.

Must Have for 733,

You must connect a 733 to a dust collection system. This hood is extremely efficient and the 733 is the best. I've not bothered to permanently attach the hood, it slips on easily and stays in place during operation. I also have experienced some pitting as others have, but only on soft woods when I try to remove too much material. This is easily handled by making a final pass on each face at 1/32" leaving a mar free finish.

OK, I thought I could just sweep up the shavings, but the 733 beat me. Even if you don't have dust collection, buy this with the planer and hook it up to a shop vac. If the nozzle would swivel, one could better customize a dust collection system, but then the price would go up. Like all my DeWalt tools, it does exactly what it is supposed to.

This product is great. When you buy the portable thickness planer buy this at the same time. It keeps everything clean. I personally think they should include it with the planer and boost the price a little bit. It is definetly worth the extra 35 dollars

i just hooked this hood up to my planer and shop vac and ran a cedar board through from 3/4 to 1/2 inch .the amount of shavings it didnt collect was negligable compared to the deluge of shavings i used to sweep up,the hood is made of steel and installs easily with the screws supplied.as i previously stated,,,why did i wait so long to get this??? i highly reccommend this item.

I have two DW733 planers. I bought one new and it came with a plastic hood. Nice because you could just snap it on and off. But it would sometimes fall off from the vibration. I ordered this hood for my 2nd planer which I bought used and didn't come with a hood. Much nicer! Screws on SOLID and won't vibrate off. Ok, so you have to unscrew it to access the knives...but how often is that done anyways?

Dust Hood A Necessity!!!,

If you buy the Dewalt Planer (another review)you MUST have the dust collector, or you will soon be buried in shavings. Buy it when you buy the planer.

Bought this to replace dust hood that came with planer. Though it looked different I went by the statements saying it fit the DW734. It does with much modification and one three handed person (two can't get to it and you need three hands to hold the cover, the blade guard and the screw & screwdriver. I give it a couple of stars because it is more solid.

Excellent Dust Collection,

This review is from: DEWALT DW7331 Dust Hood for use with Dust Collection System (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Dust Collection Hood is well made and seems durable. The piece fits to the planer in a minute with three screws to center it in place. After worker 10 board feet for 3/8th reduction, there was nothing but a small hand full of trimmings under the knife head along the sides of the planer. The nozzle hangs over the outfeed table a fair way and might be an issue for small piece work to that side of the planer. Excellent product.
