The DeWalt DW735X is at the top of my list for a planer for use in a very tiny workshop that I have at my Florida home. The reviews of the unit itself are quite good where several reviewers have indicated it is the best portable planer on the market. I have no reason to doubt that. However, I am used to running a 15" Bridgewood planer wherein the longevity of the blades is an issue for me. I am seriously thinking about installing the new spiral cutter head in my Bridgewood planer. The cost is around $800 for the spiral cutterhead. The advantage is that it runs much quieter, uses less Hp and each 1/2" x 1/2" blade has four cutting edges and is MUCH easier to change that the standard planer blades. I've tried the disposable blades and find that they only last about half as long as the regular blades.

Now, looking at the blades used by the DeWalt DW735X, I see that they are made of the same cheesy grade of steel as the dispos-a-blade system which only lasts half as long as regular planer blades. The difference is M2 HSS in the Dewalt and Dispos-a-blade system vs T1 HSS used in the regular blades. The latter are much harder and last twice as long.

In addition, It appears that with the DeWalt DW735X you are locked into a custom type of blade -in effect- limiting you to the performance of the cheesy M2 steel performance. (The blades aren't going to last very long.)

I've looked and have not found the higher quality steel blades that would fit a DeWalt DW735x planer. THIS could be a knockout factor for purchasing what is reportedly the best portable planer on the market. I mostly plane extremely hard kiln dried red oak. Note that after only a few hundred bdft, the disposablade knives looked like someone ran a course grindstone ON the edge.

Despite the complaints about short life I have been getting decent life in soft woods and oak, less in hickory but it is very hard. I am impressed that the planer even can do such a good job in oak and hickory with blade life being about 100 bf in hickory (4-6 passes so 400 - 600 lineal feet) and several times that in oak. Did 400 bf in white fir and no appreciable wear at all.

I have purchased several of these planar blades and find they work well. They are very sharp, and I've been able to run several hundred board feet through any given set. I see many reviews saying they do not stay sharp and wonder why users are having such difficulties. I find that if I sweep the boards off before going through, and make sure the plane's rollers stay free of sap, the planar runs great and the blades perform well.

I have had my planer for a year this month. It is still the most beautiful machine in the shop. Only the sliding miter box is used more. I have gone through about 2000 bf of rough cut pine. I'm going from around 5/4 down to 3/4". They are all 12" wide and 10' to 12' long. I am now on the 2nd side of my 2nd set of blades, so these were bought as backup. Last time I purchased jay a single set from amazon. This time I was smart enough to get the 2 pack set. Like most reviewers I wish they lasted longer but I am not going to complain. The planer paid for itself with the first 1000' I cut. Blades are nothing compared to the money I am saving by not having to buy the lumber already milled.
The blades are extremely sharp and fit the DW735 perfectly. Worth the money, easily.

used the new blades to plane red oak and hickory. Did a fine job although it was slow going on the hickory.

These knives are sharper than ............ Fill in the blank yourself! Really sharp and they hold their edge for a long time. I tend to run ash, cherry and mahogany and usually get 6 months from each edge. Don't track the bf count but I'm an active hobbyist. Can't go wrong for the price of a 2 pack.

It only made sense to spend a little extra and get 2 sets. They are 100% DeWalt knives and it's great to have an extra set on hand.
