Product Description

Includes 13-in Two-Speed Thickness Planer - DW735X, Dust Hose Adapter, Dust Ejection Chute, Extra Set of Knives, Infeed Table, Outfeed Table

From the Manufacturer

The DEWALT DW735X 13-Inch, Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer has a powerful 15 AMP, 20,000 RPM motor (10,000 RPM cutterhead speed) that handles larger cuts in wider materials with ease. The three knife cutter-head delivers 30% longer knife life and makes knife change faster and easier. The two speed gear box allows users to change feed speed to optimizing cuts per inch at 96 or 179 CPI. It has a fan-assisted chip ejection that vacuums chips off of the cutter-head and exhausts them out of the machine. With a 19-3/4" cast aluminum base it is 2X more rigid than a standard 10" base and folding tables. The automatic carriage lock reduces the movement that causes snipe without the need for manual engagement by the user. It also has a material removal gauge and extra-large thickness scale that deliver accurate cuts with every pass. The extra-large turret depth stop allows users to return to most frequently used thicknesses with ease. Includes infeed and outfeed tables and an extra set of knives.

I had a Ridgid planer go out after for years and it is still being repaired( over a month and a half). I could not wait any longer to finish my projects so I upgraded to the dewault. It is well worth the investment. This planer is a little quieter then the Ridgid planer. The extra tables are a plus i actually made a outfeed table and then used the brakets to attach it(see picture). The exhuast fan is a plus I use the Vortex dust collector from Rockler and you don't even need the vaccum connected. As far as snipe with my extra out feed table I get none. The cuts are much better then the Ridgid although the Ridgid was not bad at all. I would reccomend this to any one. Definitely get the 735x with the extension tables and they are adjustable too.

This is a fantastic planer for a DIY / semi-professional workshop. I could not justify speeding $4k+ for a hobbyist workshop, but in hindsight, I should not have waited as long as I did to buy the DeWalt.

PROS:
The dust collection exhaust is fantastic, especially if you have a dust collection system or dedicated shop vac to plug into. If this is your first planer, you simply won't expect the volume of shavings you will produce. The quality of finish is exceptional. With fresh blades there is no visible snipe at all. While under magnification you could likely see small blemishes, to the naked eye, the finish is perfect. This tool paid for itself within about 2 small projects from the time I purchased it. There is a local saw mill that sells #1 common and better quality hardwoods which ends up costing me about 25% - 35% what I was paying at a hardware store/lumber yard. I now build almost exclusively with ALL hardwood, since Oak from the mill is about the same price as pine from the lumber yard. I have put hundreds of feet of oak, hickory, walnut, and maple through. I find "rustic" hickory to be my favorite (great finish, and compliments many other woods well) to work with, which means lots of knots, and relatively hard (dense) wood. The planer handles this work load fine.

CONS: There are only two complaints I have about the machine. First, it is the loudest planer I have ever used. I work it in my basement, so the whole house knows it when I am working. That said gun muffs are a must if you plan to work with the harder woods. The only other complaint I would have is the life of the blades. As stated above, I run my machine extremely hard. Many people won't even put a knotted board into a planer, it is rare that I feed a board that isn't.

This is my second DeWalt DW735. First one was accidently damaged beyond repair after 6 years of use. This one included the infeed and outfeed shelves which are definitely a big asset. The screws to mount the shelves were already in place, just snapped them on, attached the handle and ready to go. Ran 12 inch wide by 4 foot long walnut through it, no snipe, finish smooth as glass. Great improvement over my first DW735 which didn't include the shelves.

I run a small cabinet shop, we had need of a secondary smaller planer...looked at, used, borrowed, several kinds before springing for this one (dint buy from amazon directly, this is a better deal with tables and knives ) We got about 200brd ft of knotty hickory on both sides, a hundy of knotty alder before blades began to show nicks, leaving small lines. When the knives are sharp, we get a better surface than on my $3500 powermatic 15" molder planer. Im initially very satisfied, just wish i could get better longer lasting blades...at $35bucks a pop you almost have to figure a set per job. Set up was easy, snipe is minimal, you CANT get it all out, atleast not on mine, and the rollers are not perfectly parallel with the table, one side does feed slightly better, but not adjustable as far as i can tell. Its better than any others ive tried in the under $1000 category, ymmv

Biggest issue is with the blades, they dull extremely fast, I planned about 100 – 10’ southern yellow pine floor boards twice at 1/32 passes (all dirt and nails, etc. had been cleaned of these boards). I went through 1 double sided set and dulled half of the second set before I was finished. I highly suggest getting the aftermarket Carbide tipped blades to resolve this as the ones shipped with the unit are not very useful.

Next issue is with the depth setting with the crank, it moves and when I noticed it I had lost about a 64th+ on the depth and had to reset and re-plane the boards. I wound up using a copper wire to tie the handle in place to keep it from moving.

Last issue, the screws that hold the blades may have been defective in my unit because I was able to snap the heads off of two of them on one of the blades after I had swapped it around.

Over all I do find the unit to be good, just getting to know it quarks and I am satisfied with its capabilities too. It works very very well once the blades are good and sharp.

The machine sets up in about 5 minutes. It takes just a short bit to learn the control functions. The first board planed was perfect in all aspects. It is really nice to buy a tool that is "as advertised".
If you get one, be sure to get the DW735X model. The "X" model comes with an extra set of cutter blades and infeed / outfeed trays AND a chip collection attachment. The trays, blades and collector are free on the "X" and buying them separately and getting just the base planer will cost you $160 extra. Be aware that a 5 gallon shop vac is marginal for chip collecting. I spent $212 on a REAL shop vac, ( Shop Fox W1727 ), and it does a fantastic job.
