This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
If you have just purchased the DW746, you are just now realizing that the stamped wings that come with he saw are flimsy and useless. The heavy-duty cast iron extension wing is you best solution, unless you are going to purchase the sliding table or other aftermarket table extension. The wing comes coated with some anti-rust coating that was fairly easy to remove with mineral spirits and some rubbing. You should remove the anti-rust coating prior to installation, because the wing may not install properly. Installation was easy, three bolts included with the wing. I found the wing to be very flat 1/64-1/100, front to back and side-to-side deviation. It has a much more solid feel and no play or give like the stamped wings.

I recommend the cast wing upgrade to the saw completely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Wing, February 6, 2003
This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had my DW746 saw for a month and used it pretty heavily. I bought one extension wing when I got the saw and installed it on the left side fo the blade (the extension wing can fit on either side). I used the stamped steel wing on the right side. The extension wing set fairly easily. It took me about 30 minutes to level everything to less than 0.005 inches. I did have to use a shim for one of the three bolt holes, but it was not hard to do. The instructions recommend two people do the installation becaue the wing is heavy, but I was able to do it myself without too much trouble. The extension wing is very solid and I've noticed no movement relative to the main table in a month of heavy use. I have only two gripes. First, I wish I'd bought two wings, instead of one. Second, I do not know what to do with the stamped steel wing it replaced. The stamped steel wing is a big piece of metal and probably weighs ten pounds. I hate to see it wasted.

Since I don't have the need for the sliding table accessory, I bought a couple of these for my saw. The added weight of the two cast iron wings really dampen any vibration that it may have had with the stamped steel wings. Add to this a segmented drive belt and it definitely passes the standing nickel test!
Although it takes patience to level them, it's time well spent and you have a first-rate table saw that rivals most cabinet saws and for a lot less.

The DW 7462 is a great saw except for three bum parts: the miter guage, the aluminum wings, and the plastic throat. You are going to upgrade -- the only question is how much you will suffer first.

The wings are great. Easy to install, flat, and heavy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its not easy money to spend, but spend it anyway..., January 8, 2005

This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have had the DeWalt 746 for a few months now, and I have been slowly adding accessories as I needed/could afford them. With a router table wing mounted on the left side, I chose to go ahead and put this wing on the right.

The wing shipped in good time and arrived undamaged. I was able to unpack and install it properly in about 25 minutes. Leveling it was not hard - in fact I was able to mount it by myself. The surface is blemish free and flat (within acceptable tolerances). No cast iron is "perfectly" flat", and neither the DeWalt saw table or this wing are either, but they are within a few thousandths...

Basically what I am saying is that this wing is worth buying. If you are like me and you are buying it after the fact, it will be hard to justufy spending the money when you could just get by with the steel wing, but then who wants to "just get by"?

Buy it, you won't regret it ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth the money, February 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
These cast-iron extension wings are a must-have accessory to the DW746 table saw. They are well-worth the extra cost. The stamped steel extension wings that come standard with the saw are cheap junk. When installed, the cast-iron extension wings give an impressive and solid feel to the saw. Aligning the cast-iron extension wings to be exactly flush with the tabletop may take a few tries during assembly. Extra patience during installation results in a high-quality fit and finish.

This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've had my DW746 a couple of years now and mounted the cast iron wings as soon as I could get them after the initial purchase. The purchase price does seem a little high, but you will not regret the expenditure. Besides assuring you a flat, level playing field, the wings provide the extra weight that makes the saw more stable, and even further dampens the little vibration this saw creates. The fit and finish are very nice, and install is pretty simple and straight forward. Recommend two sets of hands for this job. I check my wings periodically, usually when I do my regular maintenance to the saw, for level and flush to the table, and they have never moved since installation. I clean them with a med grit sanding sponge, wipe em with denatured alcohol and apply a coat of Top Cote a couple times a year. This is a great addition to an already great saw.
Highly recommend.

It's heavy, it's flat, it's level...what a piece of iron should be! I bought this wing basically because I had a hard time buying the a saw to upgrade my portable Craftsman only to find similar parts (i.e. stamped steel wings). Personally I think these wings should be standard on the saw but I know when you are trying to hit a price point, you need to make trade-offs. That being said the wings were the right place to do it. If anyone is buying the 746 table saw, factor in the wings to get what you are really looking for: A quality affordable, stable, accurate saw with low vibration that puts you above the contactor/portable grade without the $$ of a cabinet saw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice piece, will work on other saws (almost), February 9, 2008
This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
I actually put this extension on an older Unisaw. Delta has a similar extension, but the reviews on Amazon were not favorable. After seeing both items in person I would agree that the casting is much better on the Dewalt and the outside corners were rounded. Also about $20 cheaper. I did contact Dewalt and they said it would have to be modified to fit Delta and they did not recommend it which is interesting because I believe they have the same parent company. Anyway, it did require enlarging the three holes 1/16"-1/8" to line up with the top of the saw which I cannot recommend either, but it worked great for me. I also painted the bottom with a Krylon grey color that matched the old Delta grey nearly perfectly. Bottom line: it is a nicely cast and machined piece regardless of where it is used.

This review is from: DEWALT DW7462 Table Saw Cast-Iron Extension Wing (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have been wanting to get these cast iron wings for my saw since the first day I bought it but there have been other priorities so I waited. Now that I got them, I am sorry that I did not do so much earlier. The wings are perfectly flat and fit the main saw top very nicely and perfectly level. They add quite a bit of weight to the saw which is good even for an already great and smooth running saw.

One word of warning to anyone who wants to upgrade to the 52" fence is that the 52" fence kit comes with an extension table that mounts to the saw table itself so you have to remove the wing on the right side. I bought two wings at the same time as the 52" fence kit and now I have an extra wing hanging around.
