DeWalt DW758,
By A Customer
This review is from: DEWALT DW758 8-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
Having recently purchased the DeWalt DW758 bench grinder for use in my shop, I can say that it is definitely a good value. The ¾ HP capacitor-start motor comes up to speed quickly, runs smoothly with steady speed and ample power for most any grinding need. Overall, it is a very good heavy-duty general-use grinder. The stamped steel wheel guards are not as sturdy or easy to remove as the cast iron guards on other manufactures more expensive models. The DW758's guards have screws on the top and bottom, instead of on the side, which can be difficult to remove when the grinder is mounted to a bench. A small right-angle "Yankee" ratcheting screwdriver makes bottom screw removal much easier and more practical than unbolting the grinder from the bench to change wheels. This probably won't even be an issue for most users, given the relative longevity and infrequent changing of grinding wheels with normal use.

My First Bench Grinder,
By Ty Reynolds (Erie, Pa USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DEWALT DW756 6-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am Currently starting my workshop in my garage. So I set out one day for the basics, a drill press, a table saw, an air compressor and a bench grinder. That day I came home with the 6 inch DeWalt bench grinder. Since that day, I've used it to sharpen lawn mower blades, remove burs from angle iron I've drilled and many other chores. I've used other makes of the 6 inch bench grinder, and they just simply don't have the guts of the DeWalt. The DeWalt bench grinder starts up fast, doesn't have a problem removing neccessary material, and runs very quietly. It is relatively easy to change wheels, the only improvement I would make on the grinder would be to use finger tightening screws to make it easier to change grinding wheels. Other than that...Great Job DeWalt!

Had to fix wobble.,

This review is from: DEWALT DW758 8-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
The price was the best on the Internet, especially with the Amazon super saver shipping. Delivery was faster than expected. However, when I received the machine and turned it ON, I was seriously disappointed with its performance. The course (36 grit) wheel mounted on the right had a very bad wobble to it. Visually, it looked like 1/8", but a close measurement showed it to be little under 1/16" total side to side, enough to vibrate the machine and the bench it was sitting on. I thought about shipping everything back, but then looked at a possible $28.89 shipping charge, and decided to see if I could fix it myself.
I removed both wheels and moved the wobbly right-hand (course) wheel to the left hand side. It made no difference in the wobble, so I figured it wasn't the mounting hardware itself. I experimented with a few layers of black electrical tape shimmed on the inside of the wheel under the mounting washer and found that four layers of tape removed the wobble almost entirely. I also mounted two layers under the fine wheel mounting so that the small amount of wobble that it had is nearly gone. Results - an acceptable grinder. Pros: Lowest Internet price, fast shipping, OK after wheel wobble fixed as above. 8" wheels larger than motor case makes it easier to grind extended objects. Cons: Made in China, 1 bad wheel wobble, requires factory service to oil machine, no light, no quenching cup. Other comments: I found that my old 6" grinder had as much wheel wobble as the new Dewalt, but never noticed it even after several decades of use. I checked out several Sears 8" grinders manually. One was near perfect, the other had a slight wobble. Not allowed to turn them ON.

...this is a beautiful piece of work. It is well built and remarkably well balanced such that I really don't need to bolt it down. Its bearings are perfect as it seems it takes forever to stop once the power is turned off. The wheels are well matched for general use and fairly easy to change once the small screws holding the wheel covers are removed. The tool rests are sturdy and steady and easy to adjust and they stay put. I use it all the time with great results in my home shop. My only suggestion is that a work light should be included and it would be handy if there were a 2nd speed. Overall a real bargain for this 8" grinder.

Perfect for home use,

This review is from: DEWALT DW756 6-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have used an 8 inch Jet grinder for years at my job. It performed it's job perfectly over a decade of day-to-day abuse. But for home use, I decided it was overkill. I had looked at the various Delta bench grinders, but wasn't impressed with the reviews they were given. They also seemed underpowered... And Baldors are just too expensive. That left me with the Dewalt.
I have been pleased with this grinder, although I have only had it for a month. It has plenty of power for sharpening dull lawnmower blades, chisels, punches, you name it. It comes with two grinding wheels of differing grit, and between the two grits, you should be covered for 99% of any sharpening chores. Although it would be wise to also buy a wire brush wheel for metal cleaning and deburring. The unit seems well constructed. Everything assembled easily and seemed well made, although I would have liked to have seen slightly stronger tool rests. But atleast they were stronger than what I saw on other grinders I looked at. I would easily recommend this for home or small shop use. It's a great value at this price.

Solid performer!,

This bench grinder is heavy and well-constructed, although the parts do not go together very precisely, e.g. the tool rests are not exactly square to the wheels. However, a bench grinder is not exactly a precision piece of bench tool either, so I don't think my little gripe is that important. One problem of real importance though, both wheels were very wobbly as shipped from the factory. But after removing and reinstalling them on the motor shaft, they do run true.

This was not my favorite Dewalt purchase. It's very difficult to use the grinding wheels as they are located too close to the motor housing. There is not a lot of room to manuever your work. The other downside is that the motor diameter is almost the same as the grinding wheel itself. I installed a 6" diameter wire brush on one side and could not keep the arbor nuts tightened. I should have saved up and Spent the extra money to purchase a Baldor grinder.

Dewalt 8-inch Bench Grinder,
This review is from: DEWALT DW758 8-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
Don't buy if you use this grinder in a cold unheated garage or shop. Mine would only hum--would not turn--when the temperature was 10 degrees or lower. It probably will work okay in spring or summer. Main problem---made in China.

Decent grinder with poor wheels,

This review is from: DEWALT DW758 8-Inch Bench Grinder (Tools & Home Improvement)
My grinder has the same problem many others have reported. The wheels are far out of true. This leads to high vibration and will certainly shorten the life of the grinder. I'm still trying to decide what to do. Exchange it for another from Amazon, ship it to a Dewalt service center for exchange, or just get a refund and buy another brand. There's another option that might also work - buy higher quality wheels from a different company. The latter would likely be the best option if it wasn't so costly.

As expected,

This 6" stationary grinder performs all tasks as expected, with minimal motor noise and easy grinding wheel changes. And if more access to the wheels is needed, the integrated shields swing out of the way with a simple twist of a wing-nut. The plattens adjust their angle to the wheels with similar ease. For the price, this single speed grinder is a reasonable buy. |
