Great Cordless Screwdriver!!!,
By
This review is from: DEWALT DW920K-2 1/4-Inch 7.2-Volt Cordless Two-Position Screwdriver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I own numerous cordless drills and cordless screwdrivers. This one really fills the gap. Light weight and strong power, for its size. I do a lot of electrical work, which entails drywall repair amongst other things. It has enough power to drive drywall screws in, yet small enough to get into those small places. I wouldn't sheet rock a room but it's great for small jobs. Attaching cabinet hinges, electrical work and driving hex nuts, it works great in all applications. Really beats the pants off of the B&D 3 volt screw drivers. The clutch has excellent range. At the 1 setting you can drive screws into a switch face plate without breaking the plate. The higher numbers correspond almost exactly to the release pressure of my other DeWALT drills.I knocked off one star due to the poor quick release design. By the way, it hasn't been fixed. When you push the sleeve back, towards the screw driver, it releases the bit. Like others have said, when you bump it or put it in your tool belt the bit can release. It hasn't been a huge problem, just an annoying issue. The problem is that there is a small spring that helps release the bit. So it shoots it across the room. It really doesn't make any sense, since their impact drivers have the release mechanism going in the opposite direction. That said, I would buy this again and recommend it to anyone. Hopefully, some day, DeWALT will act on these reviews. For the price this is a great deal. The batteries have long run times and the charger is the latest 3 mode version which allows you to leave the battery in the charger all the time without damaging the battery. In fact that is what they recommend, keep one in the charger at all times. It charges, conditions and then maintains a trickle charge after that. I wish that I would have purchase this item long ago. Have fun. Update: I have now been using this tool for about 6 months. It still works flawlessly. I would like to add a note on the quick release. I think that DeWALT's thinking on the way the bit releases is for ease of use and quick action. Typically if you are using this tool, you will be changing from flat head to phillips again and again. By tapping the release the bit quickly pops out and to attach a new one you just shove it in. If, like on their impact driver, you had a locking mechanism it would be more difficult to release and install the bit. This is supposed to be for light duty work. This cordless screwdriver is now the first tool into my bag for any project. I can't imagine leaving home without it.

I'm remodeling my garage. One of the many tasks is putting up sturdy wall shelving to hold heavy tools and tool boxes, and putting up drop down ceiling racks to hold 4x8 sheets of plywood, sheet rock, etc. I have been using the DeWalt Cordless Screwdriver to attach the shelving to my garage studs and rafters with 3 inch wood screws. I am more than impressed with the power this little screwdriver has. Screwing 3 inch screws into a pair of 2x4's by hand or by using a drill and Phillips bit is not an easy task. The DeWalt however, has the power to get the job done easily. I don't have to soap the screws either, a task that was necessary with my old Craftsman cordless screwdriver. I set the clutch to 15 for these tough jobs. When the clutch engages, the DeWalt sounds like an air ratchet. The thing just oozes power. The 1 hour charger works as advertised. My depleted battery packs are completely recharged in under an hour. The DeWalt two position handle is a welcome enhancement from my inline Craftsman cordless screwdriver. I find that I am using the pistol grip postion almost exclusively. One feature that took some getting used to is the location of the forward, lock, reverse switch. Its location is more suitable for a left handed person than for a right handed person. To say the very minimum, I am very satisfied with my DeWalt. Next to my table saw I would rank my cordless screwdriver as my most important and useful tool.

This is simply the best cordless screwdriver around. With a drill you either have too much torque, speed and size. Having a power screwdriver is a necessary piece of equipment for any homeowner. I had always suffered with stripped screw heads or insufficient torque. No more - not with this baby. Balance is perfect, controls are terrific. I was really (pleasantly) surprised to find the chuck is a rapid load self ejecting chuck. This is really a necessity in a screwdriver (and probably in drills too - DeWalt hope you are reading this....). The torque adjustment is really great. Adjustment steps are very nicely spaced throughout the torque range. I.e. you don't have to worry about one setting being too much and the next being too little. You get a nice range throughout 15 settings. I have used this for light jobs like wall switch trim plates with no problem where I used to routinely crack them with other drivers. Also with tough driving into thick oak etc.. with no problem and no stripping. My only complaint is that the battery shape makes the tools somewhat awkward to use in the straight position. However, this is the only problem and nothing that I believe detracts from the tool overall. Having owned several black and decker cordless ones and having looked at the skil, panasonic and others. This tool leaves them in the dust ... and at a discount too! (Panasonic I have seen here for $139 or so). Get it. You won't regret it.

DeWalt DW920K-2,
By A Customer
This review is from: DEWALT DW920K-2 1/4-Inch 7.2-Volt Cordless Two-Position Screwdriver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I actually like everything about Dewalt's DW920 screwdriver with exception of the 1/4" quick release chuck. The chuck does work as designed. However, there is one very important detail that Dewalt seems to have missed, and I just can't believe that no one else has mentioned it.The chuck should have been designed with a lock position requiring the user to push the collar forward as opposed to pulling it back to release, such as with an air hose coupling. Even just putting stiffer springs in the chuck to increase the force needed to push the collar back might make all the difference, because with the current design, if the chuck collar even slightly bumps into anything at all, it moves back, releasing the bit and letting it fall out. This includes when you drop the screwdriver into your tool bucket along side other tools or slide it bit down into your tool pouch or drill holster. As stated previously, I really like the overall design of the DW920 because it is hands down the best cordless screwdriver out there. But, unfortunately for my needs, this one exceedingly frustrating and productivity-killing feature undercuts the entire tool and relegates the otherwise superior DW920 from what would easily be a "first choice" in the field tool to a "last choice" bench work only tool. If Dewalt would only improve the design of the chuck, I would never leave the shop without it.

Bought mine here from Amazon.com about a month ago and have used and tested it with much satisfaction ever since. I reviewed all 57 reviews for this tool here before buying and I rely heavily on these reviews before buying. I was concerned about the shaft wobble and the easy releaseability of the bit when the chuck is bumped or put into a tool bucket. These were so well written up by earlier reviewers. I am pleased to say that it appears as if both situations have been resolved. The chuck release spring has been stiffened and the shaft turns true. Tested it with the collar pulled back and there is no wobble. A 6 inch bit spins true. And, the collar needs a firm pull back to release the bit now. The case has ample room for all sorts of accessories. The charger is very light to lug around. The tool brakes when you release the "trigger" which is undocumented and allows you to stop with one thread left connected on screws instead of coasting to a stop and the screw stopping where it may. The slider release to change from a straight to a pistol is spring loaded so you don't have to remember to make sure the tool is locked into its new position. It clicks into a locked positon when the tool arrives at the new configuration. The previous tool I purchased from Amazon using the reviews as decision making was for the Porter-Cable 548P Bayonet Saw.(...) I have been so thankful I did.

Best screwdriver yet!,

I'm an Appliance Technician and have owned and worn out stick type screwdrivers by Milwaukee, AEG and the last was a Panasonic. I was always disappointed with the torque of the other units and the length of time the batteries would hold up. While looking for a replacement for the last Panasonic I saw this one here at Toolcrib. After comparing the stats, torque, voltages, etc. I decided to give it a try. After all it cost... ... less than the new 3.7 volt Panasonic. BEST decision I've made in a long time! This tool is tremendous! Two other techs where I work already went and bought one too. I run the tool all week and swap batteries Monday morning. Haven't killed a battery as of yet. The torque is amazing. I will say the tool is quite a bit heavier than the others but the trade off of power and run time makes me not mind carrying the extra weight. I've added a set of drill bits that have hex ends and now I don't need to carry a drill on my truck. This tool is terrific and the price amazing. As a previous reviewer said "It's not a Panasonic." He's right, this tool get the job done without struggling or falling short like the Panasonic.

I bought my DeWalt DW920K two months ago after my Black & Decker Pivot Driver broke down. The DeWalt has a 16 position clutch which is extremely useful when either inserting or removing screws, nuts, or other fasteners. Being about a 1/3 longer than the Pivot driver, and just a few ounces heavier, I find that the differences in size and weight are minor. The tool has a variable speed switch which makes it easy to start screws. The switch is also oversized for use with gloves on. The only caveat with this tool is the location of the forward/reverse switch, which I feel should be redesigned to the likes of the Black & Decker Pivot Driver. With the DW920K coming with a 1 hour charger, 2 batteries, a carrying case and 2 bits, I find the Dewalt well worth the investment.

I've owned a Milwaukee cordless screw driver for years and it recently broke. Most people you talk with say the Milwaukee is the standard for electrical contractors. Then I discovered this new DeWalt 920K. It offers everything the Milwaukee offers plus two things which I always felt were missing with the Milwaukee. Two batteries for continuous use, and a whole lot more power. The trade off is its a little bigger and heavier. But it still fits in my tool bucket and well worth the advantages. You can even use it for light weight drilling!

Dewalt has really hit a home run on this cordless screwdriver. Like other reviewers, I've used my share of other brands cordless screwdrivers. There's no comparison; the others are like toys after you use this Dewalt. Boasting an unbelievable 80+ inch/pounds of torque, the Dewalt blows the competition away. The Black and Decker's produce under 30 inch/pounds and only the Makita produces over 30; the Panasonic slightly more (and it's even more money than the Dewalt!). Nobody is offering a driver that has the torque of the Dewalt. This driver can free you from taking a heavier drill to simply screw fasteners and the speed is truly controlable; the big trigger is easily feathered and very ergonomic.Pros: Extremely robust. Has an aluminum housing, high impact plastic handle and the fit and finish are genuinely quality all-the-way. 2 batteries are included; nice touch. Fantastic torque; you will honestly not believe what this screwdriver can set a screw in. I tried some 2 inch deck screws into pressure treated lumber and was amazed. The other manufacturer's drivers aren't even in the same league. Comes with a nice kit box; typical of almost all Dewalt tools. Cons: At least two reviewers mentioned the main shaft being 'wobbly'. When I first turned mine on, I thought I saw the same thing and was somewhat disheartened. But upon closer examination, I found the source of the problem. If you retract the locking collar that secures the bit, it exposes around 1/4 inch of the shaft. When pulled back this way and turned on, you can see it's NOT the shaft that's out of center; it's the collar. The shaft runs true. One prior reviewer stated he took his apart and found that the collar bushing had a burr on it. I'm not taking mine apart, but general examination of it, likely confirms that this is probably the case. Maybe on a Saturday when I have some extra time to burn, I will take mine apart and grind off this burr. It honestly doesn't affect anything, but it is why I'm only rating it 4 stars. A 'professional' grade tool should be perfect out of the box; just my .02 cents worth. I do feel that some others that may have just quickly looked at the collar alone spinning may have missed that the shaft is true, it simply looks off center because your eyes follow the collar, in it's normal locked state, it covers the shaft and, thus, makes it all appear to run out-of-true. Unbelievable tool for the money, still. Nobody, period, is producing a driver with this much torque (not a screwdriver, that is!). Supremely handy, it's a staple in my toolbelt now, replacing the heavier drills that simply aren't needed all the time. I wish Dewalt would check into the bushing 'burr', it would get 5 stars, hands down, if this wasn't an issue.

Heavy Duty,

This review is from: DEWALT DW920K-2 1/4-Inch 7.2-Volt Cordless Two-Position Screwdriver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This unit defines "heavy duty" as far as cordless screwdrivers are concerned. Larger than your typical cordless screwdriver, it is also quite a bit more powerful. It comes with two 7.2 volt batteries, fast charger, two driving bits, and a sturdy carrying case. The unit is made of quality materials. All of the controls work smoothly and precisely. The battery packs that came with the kit are also made of sturdy plastic material. And the battery charger does indeed work as fast as advertised. I was able to charge a depleted 7.2 volt battery in an hour. In addition, this charger can also be used to charge the other battery packs from the same manufacturer, up to 14.4 volts. I have used this unit to drive wall screws into hardwood panelings, for the purpose of hanging picture frames. It handled such a light-duty application with ease. However, I did notice the same problem that a previous reviewer had mentioned: it is very easy to release the bit from the chuck. That happened to me during the above "project". I had to get down on the floor to look for the missing bit. However, I want to acknowledge that it is also quite possible that I just did not set the bit down as far as it could go into the chuck. In other words, I am not entirely sure whether the unit has a problem or the operator just did not get the bit into the chuck deep enough. The unit is large. Perhaps it is more than what you would want for a light-duty application, such as computer repair. Think carefully about how you will apply the tool. My suggestion is to visit your local home improvement store and inspect the unit first. You might be surprised to see that it is actually the same size as most cordless drills. And just as likely, you will also be impressed at what DeWalt included with the kit for the relatively low price of $99. Given what the other manufacturers are giving you, for the same price or more, this one is truly quite a "deal." Unlike most DeWalt equipment, this one is made in China. That does not affect the quality, design, or function of the tool. Which is what this review is all about. |
