5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch. Performed Better Than Expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, but battery life seems short
Consumer Reports warns that this model's battery life is only fair, and I've found that to be true. It only sank about four dozen screws before a battery that had charged for five hours gave out. The screws were long, and they were drilled into dense wood, but I was still disappointed.

Otherwise, it is a very impressive drill, with lots of torque.

The DW928K-2 was the first cordless drill that I purchased (over 5 years ago) and I've been extremely impressed with its performance. I make cabinets on the side and, naturally, I'm a weekend warrior. This drill has NEVER let me down. Though I've been able to drive 3" wall anchors with no problem, I would suggest pre-drilling for a couple of reasons. First, it will prevent future (or immediate) cracking in the wood. Second, the counter-sink looks so much nicer. Third, it's just a lot easier to drive that long screw. If you've got substandard screws, your drill might tear off the head ;-). The pinnacle of the drill's performance was mixing thinset for laying tile. My corded drill burnt right out. Even a friend's big 1/2" chuck Makita was getting too hot to hold and I was smelling smoke. My 14.4 DeWALT came through like a trooper. But hold on tight, the drill's so powerful that it could break your wrist. As far as the speed settings go, always remember to use "1" for driving screws and "2" for drilling holes. The lower number is slower (yeah, I'm a fast one). Slower driving of screws will reduce stripping and breaking bits. As my cabinet business grew, I bought another one of these drills. A great advantage to buying 14.4 DeWALT drills is that there's a whole brigade of DeWALT tools that use the same battery, and they all come with their own battery and charger. I have two drills, a flashlight, a circular saw, and I just purchased a right-angle drill in the same line. I've always got a couple of batteries in the charger, and I'm always prepared to start working. As is the same with most batteries, try and run your battery out before charging it, and let it charge fully (until the light on the charger stops blinking). There are jobs that are too much for this drill, but they are generally big professional jobs (not for the standard weekend warrior) and that's why DeWAL makes an 18v and 24v line!

The drill is fine and does what I want, but I cannot finish a job before both batteries are drained. When fully charged they drill fine in to a solid tree stump. But after drilling three 1/2 inch wide 12 inch deep holes the battery gives out and has to be swapped.

Now Dewault has come out with longer life batteries, I wonder why, but for those of us who already have the drill maybe they should offer an upgrade program to make buying the new batteries cheaper so we get the most out of an otherwise decent drill.

1.0 out of 5 stars Decent tool but you'll spend a fortune in batteries, February 3, 2004
This review is from: DEWALT DW928K-2 14.4 Volt 3/8-Inch Cordless Compact Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Dewalt Cordless tools are decent enough but they seem to be trying to make extra profits by selling more batteries. Battery life is so poor that in a few years you'll spend more than the tool cost on batteries. Everyone that I know that has purchased Dewalt is switching to Porter Cable, Rigid, Bosch and even Ryobi.

Whether it's made in Germany or on Venus, it's still the best drill on the market. I've used this drill five days a week for the last year - in wood, brick, paster, drywall, and even concrete. It has never failed me. Buy it now.

Piece of S**T! Dewalt used to make very reliable tools. That's why I bought this one, my old 12v finally died. From the very beginning I could tell qulity was no longer an issue. Out of the case the clutch didn't work (2 settings 1 and drill). The speed range slips anytime it runs for more then 5 screws, and on long jobs batteries only last about 15mins and require 45mins to charge.
On top of all this DeWalts' customer service sucks!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made in the USA.....and well worth the price!, July 2, 2002

This is an excellent all-around drill.
When I recently needed to purchase a cordless drill, I headed on down to the local LOWES so I could do a hands-on comparison of all the drills in my price range.
I was unhappy to find out that the DeWalt was the ONLY cordless drill in this class that is MADE IN THE USA.
Milwaukee Tool Company's drill is made in Germany.
Skil is made in Mexico
Makita is made in Taiwan and Japan
Black and Decker is made in China
Porter-Cable is made in China
This whole process took me around an hour and twenty minutes....but it was worth every second for me to know that my purchase would help a fellow American keep his/her job in the States (for now).
I think we should all investigate where our dollars are going once they leave our hands. This DeWalt is my first of many purchases from a company which is commited to our country.
Besides the countless recomendations I got from friends in the building business, I also know that DeWalt supports the Professional Bull Riders tour and what is more American than the sport of Rodeo???
So, do your homework and choose wisely, but if you go with this drill, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks and God Bless America

5.0 out of 5 stars Made in the USA....a rare, but worthwhile selling point, June 30, 2002

When I was looking for a new cordless drill, I went to Lowes to inspect and test feel the various makes and models.
I was already leaning towards DeWalt for both their reputation amongst my friends as well as their financial commitment to the PBR (Professional Bull Riders).
I looked at Makita (Made in Taiwan)
Stihl (Made in Mexico)
Porter-Cable (Made in China)
Milwaukee (Made in Germany)
Black&Decker (Made in China)
Upon further inspection, the 14.4 DeWalt was the ONLY cordless drill made in this country in my price range. Actually, it was a little more....but well worth the money if I know it is going to help one of my fellow countrymen keep his/her job in the States a little longer.
This took me over an hour to do...but it was worth every minute!
We should all put the time in to research where our consumer dollars are headed once they leave our hands.
The drill is great....batteries charge properly and it is handy and easy to manuever. The lightweight/compact design is a welcome touch by the R&D folks at DeWalt. I would recommend this item to everyone!
Keep up the GREAT work, DeWalt!!!!!
Also, thanks to Amazon.Com
