The contractor's choice,

I find this 14.4 volt DeWalt to be "the contractor's choice" in the screw driver/drill category. It is powerful enough to handle the commercial application- driving screws into deck boards without pilot holes. Yet it wont feel like it weighs a ton after using it for a day. The XR batteries are incredible. Charge them overnight and they'll last the entire day. A high quality, well balanced, light weight tool with plenty of power to spare. It wont let you down. Worth the extra few bucks for the homeowner who prefers the quality and power of a professional's tool.

It just keeps going and going. It is a bit heavier than the porter-cable 12v I have used but that is to be expected. As with the other reviewers I can say that it is tough both in the motor and the case. The chuck is a bit better than the porter-cable( no losening of the bit when you are unscrewing). The batteries last quite a while (I found 2 is enough to last the whole day of semi-constant use in pine). The thing that I have found the most useful is the color. I am constantly setting the drill down and the porter-cable color would tend to blend into the debri but the yellow stands out.

I have owned one of these Drivers for the last 14 months. Out of all similar products that I have had, I can without question say that this is the best. It has never let me down; with two batteries and a short charging time, it never runs out of power. I took it to my local dealer for a 12 month service, it was cleaned and checked and there was no wear or faults and that is after constant daily use (and abuse). If you are looking for a quality, reliable and efficient Cordless Drill/Driver this has got to be the one to get.

A Good Friend,

I don't know how I got along without this drill! I had a less powerful cordless drill that didn't do the job and the built-in battery died an early death. Since I am a petite person, I thought this drill might prove to be too heavy. I was wrong - the battery at the bottom of the handle balances it nicely. I love the amount of power it has and find the dual batteries, keyless chuck and torque adjustment very helpful. It's primary use for is barn repair and electric fence insulator installation and it has made life quite a bit easier.

Black and Decker in yellow,

Black and Decker is going to screw (no pun intended) their reputation again if they don't watch their DeWalt quality control. I bought one of these 14.4 drills after seeing how well my dad liked his. I refinish antique furniture, so I need precision tools. I immediately discovered the chuck didn't spin true. I took it back to replaced it. I checked the new one out before leaving the store and it was even worse. The DeWalt rep happened to be there so I talked to him. He went through three more drills before finding one that spun true. He claimed that DeWalt hires temps during the Christmas season and they don't always do as good a job. OK... I wasn't satisfied with his explanation so I bought a Porter Cable 19.2 and love it, it makes the DeWalt look like something for the kids (There's an even more impressive difference in the cordless trim saws). I would have to rate the 14.4 at one star because it doesn't do DeWalt justice. I have their 12" compound miter saw and nobody makes one better for the money!

perfect combination of power and ease of use....won't do as much as the 19 & 24 volt models, but it also won't tire the user as much....mine finally failed after 30 months of almost continuous use...recommend highly

I'm a home woodworker and needed a little more power than the 9.6v and 12v cordless drills I've owned for years. But I didn't need overkill, either. This DeWalt 14.4v has done an admirable job. True, some other brands may have more torque, but they weigh a ton. This drill won't break your arm if you're installing overhead panels or braces at arm's length at the top of a ladder. All in all, I can't find much wrong with it. the only reason I didn't give it five stars is that DeWalt will probably go to its XRP design in the near future and this one may not be available for long. But an XRP will run you at least $50 more. If you need reasonable power at reasonable weight, this drill will do the job.

The wife told me to build a dog house, and of course, I needed more tools (!) for the job :). I worshiped the ground she let me grovel on. So, I got down on my knobby knees and asked her if I could buy a new drill. She decreed that it should be so. Yes!!! And she didn't ask how much it would cost!Went into Lowes in Manassas, bravely approached the tool man and he asked me what I was looking for. "I want the best cordelss drill that money can buy." With eyes misty from a combination of tool lust and jealously, he brought me over to the DeWalt 14.4 and described a sales training video they'd shown of a guy making Swiss cheese of a 2x4 with a 1" hole saw -- in the Sahara Desert -- for hours. There might have been some pre-erotic fumbling on his part as he stroked the fresh plastic and the metal case. But I walked out of there that day with that drill and an extra battery. This was in 1994 or 95, I think. Two days ago one of those first two batteries finally became unchargable 10 or 11 years down the road. I've used it to build airplane fuselages, work benches, cut holes in wood, steel, aluminum and masonry; for grinding various parts with barbed bits -- allways confident that it would work on any material I needed to modify. This drill has great clutch sensativity, and excellent torque on demand. It's wonderfully balanced in my hand. While it's massive, it's not awkward. This may sound sad and a bit silly, but that drill has become a part of me, my identity, and the way I look at problems it might help me solve. I'm proud I own it, can't see getting rid of it, will probably keep it in a place of honor when it can drill no more. Ergonomics: 9.5. Durability: 10 Eye candy score: 6-7 (this love comes from familiarity more than initial lust). It looks better now spattered in epoxy resins and paint, and banged up a bit, than when it was new. Mine only has 1-6 and "drill" on the torque setting so it might be an older version of this model.

I bought this drill 3 years ago, and have been using it fairly regularly since. I've never found myself wanting more power, the balance is great, and it just keeps going. My batteries only last a little less than when new! Great drill.

I work for a cabling company and we have 3 of these drills. We've used them in everything from 130 degree attics to rooftops at 20 below. We've even drilled through steel I-beams with them. A really, really tough drill that will take anything you can throw at it. The power and torque are amazing. On a good battery, we've sheared off drill bits before stopping the drill. A must have for a serious contractor and a true gem for a home user.
