5.0 out of 5 stars Are you guys from Milwaukee?
I've had this drill for about two years now. I had the standard DeWalt 18v first which was disappointing. The chuck was worthless if your goal was keeping a bit in it. I returned this drill after a few months and picked up the XRP.

A friend and I picked up the XRP's at the same time and we both have been very impressed with the quality. I have spent day's jamming...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad Quality Control
I really like this drill's features and power, and the weight is not a problem with me either. My problem is with the chuck that wobbles. I use one of these drills at my job so I wanted one for my own use at home. I thought I bent the drill at work until I bought one for myself two weeks ago. It wobbled right out of the box. I took it back and the other one did the same...

I took it back and the other one did the same. I am taking it back and have since ordered a Milwaukee 0524-24 18 volt. I could only recommend this drill if DeWalt comes to their senses and fixes what is obviously not an isolated problem. Until then they should change their name to DeWobble.

1.0 out of 5 stars Power. Performance. If only it could drill a straignt hole., October 9, 2001
This review is from: DEWALT DW987K-2 18 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is one powerful tool. I've waited for it's release and finally purchased one at a local store [....] I'm on my 4th one now. They all have the same problem - the chusk is not plum, level, straignt, whatever you want to call it. The result is that the bit wobbles. A 1/8" hole winds up at 3/16. Drilling a 1/16 hile in metal snaps the bit. The wobble is so bad that it's almost painful to drill 2" bore holes. The bit is forces to go in straight because it's just so darn big. This causes the boby of the drill to wobble crazilly.

I'm going to exchange it one more time next week - I tried today, but all 6 that were in stock were also defective! Then it's refund time. Bottomm line - wait a few months until the bugs are worked out.

1.0 out of 5 stars SEVERE chuck wobble! I should've listened to Richard Drew!, November 5, 2001

This review is from: DEWALT DW987K-2 18 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
The chuck on this drill wobbles like it is attached with rubber bands! I don't know what is going on, but after seeing Mr. Drew's review, I know it's not an isolated defect. I think Dewalt makes quality tools, but this one is obviously flawed in a major way. I know Black & Decker owns Dewalt, and Dewalt is supposed to be the 'professional' line. But, I think a cheapo Black & Decker Firestorm would outperform this drill in a straight hole drilling contest! I'm very disappointed.

A friend and I picked up the XRP's at the same time and we both have been very impressed with the quality. I have spent day's jamming 3/4' auger bits through hardened floor joists in 100 year old houses. I guess the clutch has slipped a few times but nothing that a quick adjustment hasn't fixed. It's been buried under piles of plaster, stored in my trunk over weekends with 30 below temps, dropped on cement floors and it's still going strong 2 years later.

Not sure what you guys are doing but I've pounded mine mercilessly and it rocks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice high speed, but..., May 15, 2003

Well, I don't personally own one of these drills, but my boss has one, and I've used it quite a bit. It's certainly a big improvement over DeWalt's earlier 18 volt drills, but like others have said, quality seems to be lacking. I love the 2,000 rpm high speed, and the drill does have plenty of torque. The spindle/shaft that the chuck is attached to seems rather loose...

Not long after this particular drill's first birthday, something went wrong inside. Now the drill acts as if the battery is almost dead, even though it's actually freshly charged. Disappointing. The other problem we're having is with the chargers- three of them have quit working so far. (Boss had bought some other DeWalt cordless tools) The red light on one of them blinks even if the charger isn't plugged in.

I'll go along with some of the other reviews here and recommend Milwaukee.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lasted 4 months and then problems..., May 2, 2003

This review is from: DEWALT DW987K-2 18 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This was a great drill for 4 months and no wobble problems for me. But then I had to drill (50) 2-inch holes in pretty tough, old 2x4s and at about hole 35, the clutch started to slip at low speed. (It was a low-speed drill bit.) So I went up a speed and 2 holes later, it just chattered and stopped drilling, so then I went to high speed, which is really wrong for this particular bit. I barely made it to the end of the 50 holes, but, clearly, this drill has a design problem in the clutch, assuming this is what went wrong. I paid a lot of money for this drill to get quality and it didn't deliver. Other reviewers suggest another brand and another drill. Right now, it's in the shop so we'll see, but I smoked a corded drill by DeWalt a while back, so I'm more than wary about DeWalt tools.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have listened to the other reviews, May 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: DEWALT DW987K-2 18 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I should have listened to the other bad reviews of this product. It does not deserve the DeWalt name. The drill bit wobbles causing drill bits to break. The DeWalt service center "Fixed" it. RIGHT. It still does not preform as it should.
Don't waste your money on this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wobble started, and I returned it for a Milwaukee, November 18, 2002

I posted earlier that I was cautious of this drill, and now it seems as though my caution was warranted. About 3 weeks after I had this drill, it began to wobble. It got gradually worse, and I swapped it for another which came out of the box with the same problem. I have since bought the Milwaukee Lok-Tor 18 V, and it has performed nicely. With 45 more inlbs of torque, and at [$$] cheaper, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drill so far.....cautious though, October 26, 2002

I bought this drill 2 weeks ago, and it has worked flawlessly for me (and 4 of my friends who are in awe of this beast). However, after seeing some other reviews of wobble and defective clutches, I am cautiously looking at other drills, and will buy the Milwaukee if any signs of trouble appear. This thing will perform any household tasks with power and battery life to spare. I have installed 5 hanging wall cabinets and 2 shelves in my laundry room, and have installed around 10 various hollow wall anchors as well as 2 gigantic hanging media shelves in my den. All of this with one battery charge. Hopefully, the problems are isolated, and I won't have to part with this wonderful household companion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Drill works great for 4 months and thats it, November 6, 2003

This review is from: DEWALT DW987K-2 18 Volt XRP 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Adjustable Clutch Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is my second Dewalt drill the first one was in the 5 Combo Pack. All of the other dewalt tools work great to this day but the darn drill broke with in 4 months. When I bought the second drill I needed some more batteries so I bought dewalt again. Once again a couple months later the drill started acting up. I would pull the trigger and it would operate at half speed like the battery was dead. I am done with dewalt drills.
