The DW987KC-2 combo kit includes a drill/driver, reciprocating saw, reciprocating saw blade, two XR+ batteries, one-hour charger, double-ended screwdriver bit, 360-degree side handle, and carrying case. DeWalt's next generation of XRP heavy-duty cordless drills provide more torque, three speed settings, and a chuck with tighter bit grip. The DW987 18-volt, 1/2-inch adjustable-clutch drill/driver uses a DeWalt-built high-torque motor to deliver 450 in./lbs. of torque for drilling bigger holes and driving bigger screws. Besides boosting torque, DeWalt is the first company to add a three-speed transmission that produces more rpm for faster drilling and driving applications. Low speed (first gear) and high speed (second gear) are similar to other cordless drills currently available. However, the new MAX third speed is 38 percent faster, with a range of 0 to 2,000 rpm. The DW987 features a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck lock to keep a tighter grip on the bit. The ratcheting chuck lock consists of two elements: an automatic spindle lock that allows users to tighten down on the chuck twice as hard, and ratcheting action to prevent the chuck sleeve from loosening during the job. Other features include all-metal gearing and a metal gear case for durability, and an antislip comfort grip to reduce user fatigue. The DW938 reciprocating saw powers through material with 0 to 2,800 strokes per minute and a 7/8-inch stroke length, faster than a 4 amp corded unit. The electric brake prevents blades from breaking when exiting a plunge cut. A pivoting shoe with an open top provides the user with maximum visibility. Blade changes can be made in just seconds with the lever action blade change, plus the blade can be reversed for flush cutting. Cut 50 2-by-4s, 144 1-1/2-inch PVC pipes, or 30 6-inch roof vents on one charge.

I bought this set in early 2002 because I was a couple hours away from my cordless drill, which I needed, and this set was on sale. What a great purchase! The saw is as powerful as any reciprocating saw out there, cordless or otherwise. I especially appreciate DeWalt's easy blade changing method (no tools required, just flip the yellow lever by the blade). The drill is the best cordless drill on the market that I've yet seen. For normal at-home use, the battery life will never be a problem, but as has been said in other cordless reviews (for ANY brand), the batteries will wear out more quickly with heavy use. Keep them charged and pick up a spare or two if you can. Like I already said, you won't find anything better without a cord, and both are better than most with cords.
