As a pro builder with over 25 years of experience, who does about four or five roofs per year, I bought this roofer to replace my now-retired Bostitch. The gun arrived promptly and well packaged. As with most Dewalt tools, this nailer is attractive, lightweight, and will hold up among the best coil nailers out there. It's obvious that safety and speed were primary objectives in the tool's design. Its first job was a 30-square house and garage, and right out of the box, it fired perfectly in both modes. It's fast, accurate, and simply a solid tool. The only drawbacks: 1) The adjustable shingle guide tends to wiggle loose and move, so you have to readjust it every now and then if you want to run accurate courses. And, 2) Like most roofers, the gun does jam nails. Usually, the last nail on the coil falls out, alerting you that you need to reload. But every few coils, the last nail turns upside-down, getting pinched between the driver and the nose. The remedy, other than tearing the nose assembly apart, is to simply take a nail set and hammer the driver back thru the nose, thus releasing the jammed nail. I personally don't think this is the way tools should be treated. But who has two hours to break down a gun every third coil? Whether all units of this model jam this way or not, I don't know. Other than this, this Dewalt is a professional gun that will easily stand up to, if not exceed performance against, any Bostitch or Hitachi, which have always been considered the industry's finest.

In no ways am a professional roofer/sider. But I bought this gun to roof/side my parents house. For the price, I am happy with the purchase.

The first project that the gun was used on was to roof 18 square. The one problem encountered was that the gun would jam on the last nail of the coil. It would flip and become lodged in the piston. The only solution to get the nail out was to take a hammer/screwdriver and pound the piston back till the nail became dislodged. I am uncertain if this was caused by the Grip-Rite nails (big box from HD) or poor engineering. To prevent the problem from occurring, I would straighten the nails on the coil when there were 5-10 left. This was an inconvenience, but solved the problem.

Not having an adjustable vent wasn't a problem when roofing. But became bothersome at times when installing Hardiplank and Hardipanel.

Pros:
-Cheap, especially compared to renting a gun.

Cons:
-Last nail would flip and jam in the gun
-No adjustable vent
-The trigger is too long. It gets in the way when trying to close the housing. I found that I had to pull on the trigger to close the housing after reloading.

I'm an avid DIY'er and am no stranger to nail guns or tools in general. This is my 2nd roofing nailer, a happy upgrade from an import "off brand". I just finished a small 8 square job (~3000 nails) and was very glad to have it. It is lightweight to move around, but delivers a solid punch with each fire.

I didn't have any issues with depth, except at the very top ridge, where there were shingles doubled up and folded over both sides, then topped with caps, and sitting on 3/4" sheathing...I had to finish maybe 1 out of 10 nails along the ridge by hand. After I was done I then remembered there was a depth adjustment I hadn't even played with!

I had a small number of jams, but it was head and shoulders ahead of my other coil nailer, and I am convinced that the jams were mostly due to the condition of the coil nails. Handle them carefully! Any mashing or excessive squeezing of the coils changes the angle of the individual nails, which can cause jams, and can also make it harder for the gun to feed the next nail. I kept a tiny 6" prybar in my tool belt and quickly perfected a jam clearing routine: snap open the gun, whip the prybar in to push the ram in and flick the bent nail out, slam the gun shut, and slip the prybar back into the belt...then back to rockin' and rollin'. I was clearing them in under 10 seconds toward the end of the job.

Bottom line, this is an excellent, well made roofing nailer. Now that my garage roof is done, I can start planning on doing the house. This thing will be a star player on the team that I can count on and won't have to worry about.

I like Dewalt products and bought this because of that reason. My existing nailer finally wore out and this is a replacement. I have rentals and do several roofs a year and a nailer is great to have.

This is a great reliable roofing gun for a contractor or home owner. Although I can say I have never had any trouble with Bostitch roofing nailers, after purchasing one of the Dewalt guns I purchased another soon after. These guns are light and well balanced, while requiring low maintenance. The only trouble I have had with them is related to roofing in cold weather. If you turn your air pressure down to keep the nail heads from blowing through cold, brittle shingles occasionally the firing piston will jam because there isn't enough air pressure to fire and recoil it all the way back. However I did do a large roof repair last winter with temperatures between -8 and -16 degrees for two days. Once I got the pressure dialed in just right and used a lot of lubricating oil I didn't have very many issues.
