Had to use a vice and pliers to get the tip out.

Actually haven't used this yet, but anticipate it being good for torque control with our new 20V battery-operated impact driver.

It clicks the clutch off before my screws are halfway in the wood most of the time.

I am an avid Dewalt freak, I think I own at least one of almost everything they make. I am also a sign contractor, and use cordless impacts and drills several times daily. Since most of my driving is demanding (metal to metal, or driving tapcon fasteners into brick) I thought this tool would be worth the money.

First of all, mine came with little to no instructions at all. (thats not a big deal, I can figure tools out well enough) after driving a few screws with it I decided it didnt act like anything different than a bulky tip holder. So I dug the package out of the garbage can and looked at the illustrations. This tool is designed to be a solid drive, or a clutch drive. By sliding a ring sleeve back on the tool it engages the 'clutch' mechanism. Forward is the standard 'all powerful tip stripping' goodness you bought the tool to help avoid.

My particular choice in buying the tool must have been a bad one, because my ring simply did not move. After about 15 minutes of tapping it lightly with a ball-peen I finally got the sleeve to release down, into the clutch position... and it didnt seem to work at all then. It clicks the clutch off before my screws are halfway in the wood most of the time.

My general consensus is, if you are somebody who is afraid to have to shell out a few dollars a week on extra drive bits, then maybe this is worth it to you. For me, the frustration involved with having to click in and out to simple drive a screw is not worth a few extra dollars. If you are really concerned, then perhaps you should just use the built in clutch on a cordless drill instead of using an impact. And if you drive demanding items; such as brick, concrete tapcons, or long wood screws - then this tool will not help you at all.

I can't actually review this for it's ability, but my experience was not good so I will share it anyway. When I took it out of the packaging, and pulled the sleeve back/forward to engage the clutch, the whole sleeve just came off the device entirely. It just slide on and off without actually doing anything. Not the quality accessory I was hoping for. Hope you have better luck.

I was happy with this product for the first 8 months. It basically eliminated instances of screws breaking. The easy on/off feature was convenient for switching the clutch off for times when I needed more power out of my impact driver. However, after 8 months of somewhat minimal off and on use of the product the mechanism failed. It is stuck in the "off" position now and I cannot switch it back on "on" matter how hard I try. DeWalt doesn't seem to have any way for me to easily contact their corporate office for warranty claims and instead wants me to go to service centers. This is simply not worth the effort for $12. I might give another one a try sometime but for now I'm just going to use something else.

Update: It suddenly started working again. My overall score stays the same though since it is clearly has reliability issues. I am very happy that it is working though since I do like how it performs (when it works).

Great add on for any impact driver. Will surely save its price in stripped out screws. Not to mention my sanity when they are half way in and start to strip.

When I bought this item, it seemed like a really clever way to extend the reach of my impact driver - when the situation calls for it. Plus it has a clutch that helps regulate torque, right? My bits will have a longer life, too, yeah?

Well, maybe this is the case, but I can't even remove the damn bit that is included with this item. I assumed there would be some quick release mechanism, similar to what the impact driver itself has. Nope. I can't remove it with my hands alone... and I am a pretty strong guy. My next step will be brute force: pliers. I will feel like a dentist ripping out teeth.

If this is what is needed to exchange bits in this clutch accessory, that's not necessarily a fatal flaw. Just forget that the impact driver, as is, has a nice release, and carry a pair of pliers in your pocket.

My bigger issue with this item is that it wobbles. Significantly. When you think about it, this is a design flaw: the product is relatively long, and the majority of the mass is farthest from the rotation point. Physics. There needs to be some sort of counterbalance, or else... otherwise the far end will start to precess. This is not a recipe for extending bit life; it's the opposite.

Okay class... can someone tell me, "What is the name of the force that inducea precession (wobble) in an otherwise stably rotating object?" Oh right. It's called "torque." How fitting...

I cannot emphasize this enough: this thing really has a tendency to start wobbling (precessing) out of control, unless you are careful. Maybe I have a defective unit. But I doubt it. The accessory is inherently weight imbalanced. I am giving this review 2 stars in the hope that I will find some clever way to manage this. It's a great accessory in principle.
