DWP849X 7-inch/9-inch variable-speed polisher with soft start
DEWALT’s DWP849X 7-inch/9-inch variable-speed polisher with soft start, combiniing the best of power and control, is ideal for automotive and boat detail work (view larger).

DEWALT’s DWP849X 7-inch/9-inch variable-speed polisher with soft start offers the best of power and performance thanks to its 12-amp motor and variable-speed capabilities. Whether you’re polishing cars and boats for detailing projects or finishing metal and concrete surfaces, the feature-packed DWP849X delivers the pace and control necessary for applications often undertaken by metal fabricators, paint specialists, auto and boat detailers, and DIYers alike.

Powerful Polishing

The DWP849X’s commanding 12-amp motor delivers 1,250 max watts out and 0-600/0-3,5000 RPM to power through demanding applications, yet the conveniently located two-finger variable-speed trigger allows you to maintain complete control no matter the momentum. The all ball-bearing construction and heat-treated precision-cut steel gears further ensure long-term durability and smooth operation. Plus, it’s equipped with DEWALT’s exclusive Controlled Finishing System with soft start, which provides improved speed control and finish quality. Integrated wool ingestion shields increase the polisher’s lifespan and reduce costs associated with servicing and repairs.

All that power doesn’t compromise on user comfort, though, thanks to the DWP849X’s light 6.7-pound weight that allows you to polish and finish surfaces over longer run times and at various angles. Additionally, it comes with a three-position bale handle along with the traditional side handle, expanding the number of gripping options to best tackle the project at hand. The rear handle is ergonomically sculpted with a rubber overmold to further improve comfort, and the non-marring rubber gear case cover helps to minimize finish scratches or scuff marks—combining the best of form and function for any polishing needs.

The DWP849X’s included hook-and-loop backing pad makes for quick and easy tool-free accessory changes, and the DWP849X is compatible with a variety of hook-and-loop accessories from any number of brands to maximize options depending on the application.

So far so good on this.... I ordered this from an outside source from Amazon (even though I was waiting for Amazon to have it first and at a comparable price)... anyway, before I had the DWP849 and it worked well for me for the application part but seemed temperamental when it came to being ran for a long period and me trying to press the trigger and it deciding that it did not want to start till it was ready. Was able to return to Amazon (benefits of Amazon) and placed myself on the product notification for the DWP849X. As mentioned I got it, and about a week earlier then offered here. What this DWP849X has is the rubber front, which was exposed on the DWP849 and caused one to be very nervous that if the polisher grabbed and jolted when not firmly held you could mare the paint. The RPM dial is in a better position and has a larger range. I took mine through all the speeds to know what the sounds were like just to make sure it was attenuating the speed correctly and from the sound, the revolutions increased and decreased accordingly. Benefits if you are planning to use a hook and loop pad the pad is provided for you in this case where before this was a separate purchase, and the yellow rim of the pad is soft cushioned and great for once again no marring the paint. Handle and finger pull and lock are easy and constant. It comes with both handle types, stick bar and u-grab bar. This seems well worth the extra few dollars when compared to the DWP849. At time of this write-up Amazon though was at 299.00 and others were around 200.00 with shipping and this is what I found also around the internet plus or minus 15.00. For a sander I am unsure of the benefits, but for the polisher aspect over the DWP849 I like it for the minimal price jump between the two models.Read more ›

I got this to replace a >20 year old DeWalt buffer that is about worn out. Overall this is what I expected after using the comparible model that I've had for many years. I like the grates over the air intakes and the rubber covers over the head part and handle,as well as a velcro disk is included, very nice features. Now for the down side, the "soft start" I hate, I'd much rather have the stright variable speed as the soft start is "jerkey" when it starts. This has lead to some close calls buffing near edges, it makes it hard to control when starting it near edges. I DO NOT like this feature AT ALL!!! If you'd call it a feature, more of a detrament than a positive feature, in my opinion. I'd defanatly have given it a 5 star plus rating otherwise. With >40 years buffing experiance on show cars I'm sure I can overcome the issues with it with further pratice. But, I'm sure this will cause some issues for people with limited buffing experiance. Use caution starting it near edges, it is very jerkey on starting, otherwise a great buffer overall. You'd be hard pressed to find a better buffer at this price point, just be aware of the "soft start" issue or you'll bite an edge with it.

Bought this to polish our two cars - one is a traditional slick black paint and is 4 years old - the finish had lots of fine scratching from automatic car washing (no, I'm not the type to hand wash...I know it's better, but I just don't have the time). The other car is 6 months old and has a nice factory finish and I wanted to keep it bright and shiny. So far, this tool has done well. My brief observations are:

The tool is heavy duty - it runs continuously with no problem and can handle reasonably heavy loads. I wouldn't quite call it commercial grade but it is very close to it. The average pro working on cars will unlikely tap the tool's potential.

The tool does heat up after continuous use - it doesn't blow hot air from the cooling fan on the user, but there are a couple of metal spots on the body of the tool that get hot - the handles are fine but if you grab the body of the tool to set it down or pick it up, you won't get burned but it will get your attention.

The soft start feature is nice, but there is one quirk: Pulling the trigger too rapidly causes the tool to overshoot the targeted RPM. When the spindle is just starting, the constant RPM feature appears to adjust input voltage or current to maintain the RPM based on the user's input into the trigger. Pull the trigger a little too fast and the tool ramps up the power rather fast - if the tool isn't under load, the spindle will spin too fast and gradually settle into the target RPM. This isn't a big deal as any reasonable user will find the modulation perfect for polishing - but if your finger slips or you accidentally goose the trigger while using it, the tool will respond with a big jump in power. That can catch you off guard a little if you don't anticipate it.

This is a good solid machine.
My shop produces high performance concrete products. We mainly use this polisher to grind the rough backsides of castings back with a stock removal wheel. This is hard on a grinder/polisher and depending on the size of the project it can take two or three hours of grinding. We've burned out many weaker grinders over time. Based on how this Dewalt feels and has performed so far I'm expecting a long service life from it.
Pros:
Good torque/power.
Great speed range.
Soft start.
Good balance and weight.
Good placement of the trigger, lock, & speed controls.
Cons:
It can bounce if you're not careful when using a small wheel.
It needs a standard collar at the base of the arbor. If it weren't for this I would give it five stars. It is small and smooth preventing the attachment of any dust extraction shrouds but their own. Their shroud is inferior. It is opaque, expensive, and most important NOT adjustable. Different pads, wheels, and attachments have different heights. If you are just polishing this will not matter to you. For grinding concrete this is vital to personal safety. There is at least one company I saw at the World of Concrete this year that makes an adapter for the collar so they can accept standard grinder attachments. I lost their brochure and have not been able to find them yet. Until I find them or a better solution I have removed the black plastic guard and wrapped several layers of Gorilla Duct Tape around the collar for my Dust Buddy shroud to bite into. This is temporary and must be readjusted if you grind so long that the heat builds up and softens the adhesive. It would be so easy for them to just build this with the same standard collar that goes on every angle grinder they make.
