The best book on electrical estimating,
By John Wayne (LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DEWALT Electrical Estimating Professional Reference (Dewalt Trade Reference) (Paperback)
No doubt, I recommend this book for all electricians as a well-written estimating manual. Loaded with estimating checklists, forms and practical tips through out, this book demonstrates clearly the author has thorough knowledge of our industry. The book covers the process step by step, from marketing, quantity take-off, supplier pricing, bid organization to project management and change order pricing...I especially like the part where he elaborates on how to actually close a deal (e.g. post-bid estimating, contract negotiations). Quite neat stuff...Suitable for everyone, whether you are a rookie or veteran, you will like it! (I already own a bunch of DeWalt books because I like the conveniently designed sizes. This book is one of the best I got so far, and it is a relatively new one, too)

Average Estimating Book,

This book contains alot of information, but most of it is useless and is not used in the field. It is written in too general terms, I would have like to have seen more specific examples, they show alot of blank estimating forms, how does that help us understand the material?

I've had the book now for about a month now and have actually stopped reading it. The information is solid but the way the chapters are arranged makes the information difficult to absorb. As you read, the book references tables and forms but they are at the end of each chapter. This makes it difficult to follow because you either have to repeatedly flip to the back of the chapter to reference each table, or wait untill the end of the chapter and try to remeber what each form or table is for. Also, whether good or bad the book is only 6 inches tall. I thought I was getting a full sized book.

Australian perspective,

Overall a well thought out book.
I found some aspects very useful for an Australian reader however, metric/ imperial matters aside, there were a number of terminology differences that made the down under trained tradesman wonder just what are you guys talking about here and there..... I'm sure we have things that we call something else which would confuse our American counterparts but a glossary might just help the overseas based (and trained electrical contractor) extract just that bit more information out of the resource.
