I always loved visual arts and spent a lot of time drawing and painting when I was a child, so Photoshop became my new playground right from my first introduction to it. And soon my main job started getting in the way of my new passion. Even though it wasn’t an easy decision, I took a leap of faith and quit my job to go to Australia to study Photography and Digital Imaging. I started marketing myself and working as a commercial photographer in Melbourne right from the beginning of my Commercial Photography course. We photography students had full access to a wonderful spacious studio in South Melbourne, and very soon I started booking photo shoots for local record studios, modeling agencies, and advertising agencies. I not only photographed, but I also art directed and designed CD album covers and booklets for a few Australian musicians in Melbourne. It was an amazing-dream-come-true life for an ex-accountant! I stayed true to my passion and continued working on my skills, both lighting and post production, even after I finished my photography course and left Australia in 2010. I have been published internationally as a retoucher and photographer in the leading Beauty and Hairstyling industry magazines such as Salon International, American Salon, Hair’s How Russia, Canadian Hairdresser, and many more in the past year. I also started sharing my knowledge and skills with young photographers from all over the world through my retouching classes and eBooks in the beginning of 2012. This book was created as an inspiration source with many beautiful images, illustrations, retouching tips, and a few illustrated text and video tutorials for amateur and professional photographers who work in Adobe Photoshop. I hope you enjoy my collection of photos as well as the work and insights from our brilliant guest artists and get inspired to follow your dreams!

I've purchased several books & eBooks about retouching. This book was one of few which demonstrates in steps how to achieve an overall satisfying results. After my experience with this book I went ahead & acquired the rest of the books by the author. The book contains links to step-by-step in details videos links, time lapse videos, photoshop brushes recommendations, tools recommendations like wacom tablet, other sources & links, a recommended workflow for processing an image. The author included many of her work, accompanied by details on how to achieve such results, things to watch for like lips, eyes, nail polish, etc. My favorite was the detail explanation of frequency separation, & how to use custom brushes to end up with flawless results. The author was also helpful on social networking answering random questions & interacting with others. In my experience not many professional photographers can do so, they're always busy, but Julia takes the time to go the extra mile. The material in the book helped me a lot, I ended up re working my retouched photos based on techniques I learned.

Short version of review:
If you do any kind of portrait retouching then you can't afford not to buy this book. It has great tips and very inspirational. I have some minor complaints (please read long version of review) but those weren't enough to lower my rating.

Long version:
First I'd like to say that I have absolutely no relation with the author (I wish we could be friends:). As some reviewers complained that friends of the author made positive reviews to increase the rating. I'd like to respond to them by saying Julia is very responsive to her fans and whenever people ask questions or say something nice on a post she wrote in a blog, she replies to every single one of them. Really she is that nice and helpful.

About the book: well,it is full of great tips on retouching from simple tools such as healing brush and clone/stamp tool to advance techniques like frequency separation. The book is also full of inspirational beautiful photos from her portfolio. Not only that, but also a youtube link or smartphone code with some images on how they were retouched. The tips section from other pros is also very helpful. I personally read a couple of them that made me say "wow I didn't think of that before".

Ok, what I didn't like: well, the font is very very small in the pages with retouching tutorials. I mean there's information that you could spread over 40 pages in other books that are somehow fit in 5-6 pages. The content is great, you can easily spend an entire day applying what you learned in 1 page alone. However, for people with bad eye sight, it would be a challenge. I hope that will be fixed in future publications.

Another complaint is that the book feels more like a magazine rather than a reference. But honestly, I could care less.

Had the opportunity to purchase the Digital Photo Retouching book (hard copy) recently. I was a little skeptical at first. I had gotten the Creative Retouching Essentials digital edition when that one came out and found the information too basic and was afraid this one would be similar to that one - but I am glad I gaved it a try. Digital Photo Retouching is a book for more advanced users that want to give their photographs the high-end treatment. These techniques can be applied to most styles of portraiture and make a huge difference in the final image. Extremely valuable tips are shared, not only for the photographer, but also to communicate with one's model to ensure we save time and headaches while retouching. I have been applying the 'frequency separation' technique learned from the book and it has been an invaluable aid in correcting skin patches, especially cellulite and uneven skin. Since there are a lot of areas that photographers need to focus on while working on an image, I am tackling one thing at a time until I can perfect the technique. The book is also filled with very useful tips, such as using several exposures to get all the areas of the image looking their best. Included is a list of things we can go over to make sure we do not forget what needs to be retouched, and it is very helpful. The book also covers copyright information. As I purchased the hard copy of the book, I do find it a little annoying not being able to dive directly into the videos on my computer since I do not have a cam connected to my desktop. I accessed the videos on my phone, but need to have an easier way of accessing them directly. This is mostly my problem and does not, in any way affect the information included.Read more ›

I have bought the e-book, and it is truly amazing! Not only the author goes through the details of how things are done, but the pages also include links to youtube videos which actually shows how she does things, so it's more visual and faster to learn. The book still contains information which the reader needs to read in order to get the full grasp of what the author tries to convey.

It helped me a lot improve my knowledge of Photoshop and the digital image retouching.

I also love it, because you can read it on your iPad, on your computer or other tablet. The book is also well created in the sense that the links are clickable in the document itself (when read from an iPad in the Books application) and the youtube videos open directly.

Great job Julia and Team!
I commend you!
