Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. (Discovering Bks.). CIP. Scribners. 1986. PSS $10.95. Grade 1-3 Florian's watercolor sketches in these attractive volumes are quick approximations, often in warm, sandy tones, complemented with various shades of green in the volume on frogs. The texts are brief and often sketchy, although each has a logical organization. The survey of frogs skims the stages of the life cycle and principal physical characteristics and introduces many different species in a simple, informative, and non-technical manner. The discussion of seashells emphasizes groupings of shells by family, physical type, and ocean province in which they tend to be found. The books are uneven in their execution but in this case appealing in subject matter and appearance. They sometimes suffer from simplification of explanation or lapse into miscellany, and the book on seashells is at a rather difficult reading level. Margaret Lane's Frog (Dial, 1982) and Millicent Selsam's First Look at Seashells (Walker, 1983) are quite similar in content, but children will find both of the Florian books interesting and attractive.
