The biggest thing my kids and I were looking forward to in this game was the toy box mode. It wasn't until after we brought it home that we discovered there is no toy box mode in the 3DS version. Why on earth have a hexagonal disc on the base? The description here is the same for every platform, but on the IGN wiki site, it has a specific section about the 3DS version. This will be going back and we'll get the Xbox 360 version instead. I'll update my review for that one in time.

More about the 3DS version:
The infrared connection of the base to the 3DS is weak. You have to hold the console just inches away from the base in order for it to recognize the connection. It doesn't stay connected for play. You only do it at the beginning for this version or whenever you want to add discs to the character. The base is also smaller than the other consoles. The base consists of the hexagonal spot and only one character spot unlike the other consoles that have two. The mini games are not bad. Sometimes it's hard to tell why you won or lost.

The Characters:
The characters and discs are the same as the other console versions. Characters are rubbery and soft and a little flexible. Some of Sculley's blue paint was in the packaging making me wonder about how long before his colors chip off or fade. You don't want to let toddlers play with these due to the fact the thinner characters, like Mrs. Incredible, feel like they might break if played with too forcefully.

Update:
We actually decided to keep this one and also get the Xbox 360 version because my son did enjoy every mode, but the story mode. For this, I'm going to up the stars to 3. The differences between this version and other versions should have been made more clear. Even on the box of the 3DS starter pack it misleadingly says "Toy Box Challenge."

I've seen a lot of reviews via youtube and else where that say that this version of the game is horrible and so on.
how ever I found it entertaining and fun. though the regular price ($79) is way too much. the price I got it for ($41) was more reasonable.

for me the game was worth $41, it is what it is: a portable version of the infinity game.
due to this it (like other multi console games) lacks the free roam/play option and gives you mini games in the form of turn based dice roll board games where in story mode you have to complete the tasks, be it defeat the enemy(s), collect the items, etc.

as a handheld version you can expect that the graphics, and perhaps the audio will be of less quality to the home console versions.
however, if nothing else, this version allows for one thing the console version does not: travel.
yes, this version is good for Disney fans who want a copy of infinity, but do not have the time to sit at home and play a game.
this version allows you to take it on the road (or where ever you may go to play a handheld) and play a version of the game.
think about it: say you're waiting in a long line, say the store, the DMV, bank, or satellite city hall and the line is just too long that you're tired of waiting.
did you bring your 3ds (or 2ds)? did you bring Disney infinity? well problem solved.

say you're like me and use public transit, the next public transit is not for another hour, or your destination is a long ways off.
once again, problem solved (just don't miss your stop or the bus/train/plane)

say you don't want to play story mode and just want to play your favorite mini games, no problem there. you can play the mini games on their own.

is this game perfect?

This is NOT the same as the console versions. This is a crappy rip-off of Mario Party, with terrible graphics and even worse gameplay. There is NO TOY BOX MODE!!!! Nothing in the commercials is in this version of the game. Very sneaky, Disney, very sneaky indeed. If your kid only has a 3ds, get Skylanders. If they already have it, wait for Skylanders Swap Force. This game is garbage on the 3ds. I recommend it to NO ONE, not even my worst enemy.

EDIT 8/21: I'm glad to see that Amazon has done something about this issue and suspended sales for this item. Hopefully DIS will release a proper description for retailers to have for the 3DS version. Kudos, Amazon! Hopefully other videogame retailers will follow suit.

EDIT 2: A day or two after my last edit I noticed most every major retailer now has the correct information regarding the 3DS version of the game. Still took me almost a full week to get a major brick and mortar video game retailer to let me switch, after getting the runaround from their CSR and multiple employees (update my firmware on my system? Really? That won't fix any amount of false advertising!). Such a freaking headache for something that the consumers had no control over and were ultimately swindled by Disney! As long as I get one at least person to not buy this garbage and save them from the same experience I had I will be pleased with my actions.

The 3DS version of Disney Infinity is a bit different that the other platforms. It has more of a "Mario Party" feel to it. There isn't a Toy Box option like the other platforms to create your own world to play in. Instead, the power coins unlock special dice and toys to use in the larger than life board game. It is still entertaining, but I wish it was more like the other platform versions.
