My 9 year old and I play skylanders a LOT. We've got somewhere between 40 and 50 figures for it, and it's been very enjoyable, a great way for us to kill some time on the Xbox.

When I saw this, I didn't see any real details about it, I had just assumed "more of the same" but with disney characters. So I ordered it, since we both love Disney / Pixar movies and the characters. Having the chance to play those characters in their universes seemed pretty awesome.

It arrived a day earlier than expected, and fortunately I'm on vacation for over 2 weeks, so the timing was perfect. We unboxed it, fired it up, and learned a new level of frustration.

It's packaged well - figures are very well done, with a little flexibility so they don't feel like they'll shatter the first time your kid slams one down too hard. They're also a little more detailed than skylanders figures, more like actual figures of characters. The base is nice, very thin, much easier to store than the portal from Skylanders.

There are power up discs available - you can use up to two on a character, just put them under the figure. This apparently gives added abilities, although we haven't played with those yet.

Sound - way too quiet - every other input in my receiver is a good level, this game is much quieter than everything else, so I had to crank the volume up. Forget about that, and the next input (or the next game I play) is cranked way too loud. And the game itself may not even support surround sound systems depending on your configuration. The annoying logos and "hey look at me!

The Disney Infinity Starter Pack Wii U bundle is an excellent investment for family entertainment. It's ideal for families with young kids and parents who are casual gamers. Hardcore gamers will probably enjoy the variety of options up front, but tire quickly of the simplistic gameplay--with the exception of the Toy Box (customizable game world), which will offer many, many hours of creative play. Think of it almost like a digital Lego set with a modestly steep learning curve that, once grasped, becomes very immersive and fun.

Disney was smart in its approach. Each game character has a character-specific gimmick, like Sully's forceful roar or Captain Jack Sparrow's flintlock pistol and cutlass. But then each character can also be equipped with special tools, like a wand for editing/altering the game world, or a laser pistol for zapping bad guys. Jumping or double-jumping and exiting a menu is mapped to B; attacks are mapped to X; entering a vehicle, talking to characters, or interacting with some objects is mapped to Y; and exiting a vehicle or selecting a menu option is mapped to A. These functions remain consistent across most--perhaps all--of the game's characters, so it's easy for even relatively young children to grasp quickly. My 3 year old daughter had it down in about an hour.

The Toy Box edit mode is slightly less user-friendly and involves a modestly steep learning curve up front. However, it's very usable once you spend an hour or two getting comfortable with its quirks. Here is where the Wii U gamepad really shines for this game. The inventory screen makes it easy to review and select desired world pieces that can be placed throughout the landscape. These pieces include landscape pieces (hills, trees, flowers, etc.

This game is fun, for the sake of being fun. It answers to no one. It takes a bold stand and walking in the footsteps of games like sky landers in hopes of a making a name for itself. Without the success of games like sky landers this game may not have decided to go the route of using real world toys, but it would not have had the same effect. Seeing these toys come to life is a dream to kids the first time they see the enthusiasm they have as they come to life in the game world. I am 26 and a huge geek and a Disney fanatic. I first think of Indian in the cupboard because they toys themselves are the characters and not what you see in the movies. I can not wait for wreck it ralph, toy story and nightmare before Christmas to come out. If your kids are younger, they will not have a problem growing into the game, as some of the content takes time to get used to. I am impressed with the set of tools you are given which aid in creating your own games. Yes your own games, your kids can be creative and this may inspire them to test the waters else ware. The game lets kids be kids, and who has not dreamed of their toy box coming alive, and no characters are more fun than Disney`s.

When I heard that Disney was coming out with a Skylanders-like game called Disney Infinity, I rolled my eyes. I figured that this game was another lousy attempt to make the ultimate Disney game, only to end up being a very mediocre-received game like Disney Universe. The premise to make a game that features all your favorite Disney characters sounded good... too good. I figured that a game with that high of potential could only bomb. Fortunately, I was wrong.

Similar to Skylanders, Disney Infinity is sold as a starter pack. It comes with the game, a figure base, three playsets put into one piece, and three figures: Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean), Sulley (from Monsters University), and Mr. Incredible (from The Incredibles). Though these are the only figures and playsets that the game comes with, there are plenty more that can be purchased in the game isle of your local store. As an action figure collector, I was very impressed with these figures. Though they lack any form of articulation, they are very cool. Though they're not perfect, they feature a nice amount of detail and paint. It should be noted, however, that these are not meant to be played with. As the repairman from Toy Story 2 said, "They're for display only."

The question that most parents will probably ask is "Is this worth the extra money?" I would say so. Instead of paying $50 for some cruddy movie-based game, you could pay $75 for three really fun movie-based games. The other playsets are about $35 each, which is still cheaper than most licensed games. The only real wallet emptiers are the characters who are sold singly. Paying about $14 to play as a character is a bit extreme. Even that, however, isn't as bad as it seems, since you're still getting a cool figure to come with it.
