Review

"THIS BOOK IS PERFECT for those looking for pertinent information in a concise, yet entertaining vehicle. Dr. Binkley, who has seen pregnancy from both sides, comes at the subject from the standpoint that pregnancy is a natural process and not a 'condition' where providers are supporters and advisors, rather than meddlers."
-John C. Hobbins, M.D.,
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, Colorado

Whether you are a soon-to-be new mom or new dad you will find this book to be a wonderful resource. Dr. Binkley has written a complete guide to helping to bring about a happy and healthy pregnancy. There are many aspects of this book to like. There is an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle as a key to a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. There are many photos which help to explain such things as the position of the baby during the birth process. Also, it is aimed at dads as well as at moms; thus, the notes for dads throughout this book makes dads feel like they have not been forgotten. There are also science notes in which more technical aspects of pregnancy and birth are clearly explained. And the office notes allows for personal experiences of women. All in all, this is a book I highly recommend.

PROS: Dr Shelley Binkley is an obstetrician who provides a great deal of very helpful information on pregnancy and the process of birth, sometimes utilizing really good photos... I found her approach to dicussing the information refreshingly easy to read and informative. She includes a large variety of pertinent information about different aspects of pregnancy and birth with a good inclusion of options. I recommend this book for pregnant moms wanting to learn more about whats going on with their body and the birth process. It is well laid out/ a quick easy reference.
CONS: She mixes in her own experiences occasionally which is sometimes good but as a health care professional.... not always a good thing. I feel options should be presented factually without opinion. Some of the good photos are too small to see detail. :( She discusses homebirth ... good :)...but clearly steers the reader away from that option. It just isn't my style of teaching. Let the reader decide with good information and education.
As a lactation professional, I do not recommend this book for breastfeeding information. All breastfeeding books can get outdated quickly. It is the interjection of personal opinion of breastfeeding management, sometimes not entirely correct that concerns me the most.

I am a pediatrician and a father of four. I have been to countless deliveries and through several pregnancies. This book gives you what you need to know in a fashion that spares the unnecessary fluff. Too many pregnancy books are like a heavy tome that you lug around for every circumstance possible. Dr. Binkley just gives you what you need to know 99% of the time.

I do recommend this book. I think it does an excellent job of telling you what to expect and what to look out for if things aren't right. There is just enough information, but not too much. Lots of women lug around other thicker books on pregnancy; this one they are more likely to actually read.
